I was re-watching one of the greatest war thriller's of all time, and I noticed the storyline, involving a certain young American officer sent on a mission during the Vietnam War was remarkably similar to a comic I read recently.
I refer, of course, to Apocalypse Now (starring Martin Sheen and Yul Brunner) and Mass Effect: Evolution. Evolution doesn't directly rip off the classic movie, but there are enough references and in-jokes to make it obvious that they're paying homage. For example:
Hardnosed Military Leader: General Williams in the comic/Colonel Killgore in the movie.
Small band of brave companions that die, one by one: Jack's friends/The boat crew.
Indoctrination Device: The pillar thingy/The jungle and stress of war.
Honorable military leader who goes crazy: Desolas/Colonel Kurtz.
Mostly crazy followers: The Indoctrinated Turians/Kurtz's native forces and Green Berets.
Flawed hero who is nearly broken by the events: Captain Willard/Jack Harper (TIM) Willard is played by Martin Sheen, Jack Harper is modeled on him.
What do you guys think?
