I plan on making a mage soon, and I would like to know which set up is overall better, a caster mage with blood mage, spirit healer, and keeper (in awakening), or a non-tank mage with arcane warrior, blood mage, and battle mage (in awakening). I would just like to know which would make for a better and easier run. All responses are appreciated.

Doesn't matter, Mages are overpowered overall.

Both are going to crush with ease, pick whichever you prefer.

Agreed.

Just to answer the question though there is no "overall" better, since they excel at different things. Arcane Warriors types are easier to play, since their defenses are easier to set up and maintain. Keeping a caster mage alive requires good game knowledge and micromanagement , but offense-wise they have a significant lead over the AW (unless they're support/generalist type, in which case why bother comparing them to AW's? The playstyles are much too different).

Neither is "better".

Would you rather stay back and cast spells from a distance or would you prefer to mix up magic and melee or just be a caster who can wear armor? They're just two ways to play the mage class and both are effective.

Keeping a caster mage alive isn't that difficult. If needed, keep arcane shield+rock armor up. When you have the funds, buy the Reaper's Vestments in Denerim and perhaps the Lifegiver ring when in Orzammar. Make use of the glyphs, and if an enemy approaches, just cast cone of cold and move away. It also helps to have a tank on hand, and make sure they are using taunt.

Arcane Warrior/Blood Mage/Keeper

Is my Caster mage and its completly devatasting plus has good defenses.
I tried the melee type but didnt like it.

If you want a melee mage though Shapeshifter as a Bear can be made pretty damn tough.
In Origins its better to invest into Str, but in Awakening all stats into magic is better.

One question about being a blood mage, should I start investing in constitution instead of willpower right off the bat, or still put some into willpower?

I wouldnt put a single point into willpower ever as a Blood Mage.

Theres two schools of thought on this but its pretty simple.
At every level do one of the following.
2 Magic, 1 Con
or
2 Con, 1 Magic

Keep in mind though you only need 36 Magic to have access to any spell in the game. So its cerainly viable to do 2mag/1con until then and switch to 2con/1mag after you reach that point.

Personaly I prefer the 2 Magic and 1 Con every level method since im more of a caster on my blood mages and magic to a certain points gives more of a boost to your spells then 10 Hp does.

This changes alot in Awakening when its possible to get +60 or more to Con from equipment alone.

Ive played two Blood Mages.
One that was a Arcane Warrior (Not a melee character, played as a caster in heavy armor)
and another that was Shapeshifter (Experimental build)

I must say that out of all my mages being a Caster Arcane Warrior Blood Mage was probably the most enjoyable character.  I couldnt stand the melee version so I switched to better armor and staves and was more of a caster and it worked fine. (Even better in Awakening, Blood Mage/Arcane Warrior/Keeper)
