Which is a better class overall for a good run of the game? Are the criticals, lockpicking, and extra skill points of a DW rogue worth the raw power of a mage?

Both are good, but Mages does have a lot more combat utility overall. You can also get a party member for lockpicking.
In the end however this game is easy even on Nightmare so power level shouldn't be an issues on any build. Go with what you like.

Well there are exceptions but mages tend to be squishier, and rogues tend to be more versatile. As a rogue being able to pick locks, stealth, and even stealth in combat makes huge chunks of the game much much easier.

However the CC abilities of a mage are just as good as stealth imo.
Still prefer how you play rogues but mages are probably more powerful. Not as good single target dps but with their AoE and stuns/glyphs etc they are absolute powerhouses.

Scouting ahead while in stealth can be fun, and it's always handy to be able to pick locks and disarm traps as a rogue. They can also do quite a bit of damage once you pick up momentum.
Mages can make many battles trivial with their crowd control and aoe spells. It can be especially fun to cast a glyph of repulsion on a doorway and fire off any off inferno or storm of the century on the helpless victims within. My easiest playthroughs have come as a mage, but it can also make the game feel a bit too easy.
Rogues and mages are both fun to play. I suggest trying them both.

You will enjoy the game either way.
Keep in mind all the rogueish elements can be done by either of the other rogues you can recruit.
I personaly find the Mage rather rewarding since you have greater control over the battlefield with proper spells and also support your entire party.

I personally prefer mages, because they are great at dps whilst still being masters of crowd control.
