Hello,

Dunno if anyone will be able to help with this, but here goes.  It's very complicated, so advance thanks to anyone who takes this on.

I am trying to play Mass Effect 1 on my Macbook Pro via Bootcamp & Windows XP.  I bought the physical game from Amazon.  It's the "Value Games" edition.

Computer Specs are as follows:

2008 Macbook Pro

* Bootcamp v2.2
* Windows XP SP3
* Intel Core 2 Duo T7700 @2.40Ghz
* 2GB RAM
* NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT -  Driver v 6.14.11.8585
* Realtek High Def Audio - Driver v 5.10.0.5512
* DirectX 9.0c

Note that I am out of space in my Bootcamp partition, so I am trying to install the game on an external USB 2.0 hard drive.

Initially, I was unable to install the game due to the "saferun.exe" error.  Seems like it's a compatibility problem with my DVD drive, so I used my work PC to copy the problematic "data02.rar" onto a flash drive.  I then copied the entire contents of the install DVD onto my external hard drive.  I then tried 2 approaches to install the game.

ATTEMPT 1:

I then tried the manual install instructions posted here:

http://ve3d.ign.com/...all-Mass-Effect

No probelm using WinRAR to unpack all the files.  I ran the launcher and put in my serial number.  The game then starts when I click "play" and the introduction runs until the "Press Any Key" screen.  When I press a key, I get a "General Protection Fault" soon afterwards.

ATTEMPT 2:

Instead of the manual install process, I used Free Iso to create an ISO image of the DVD contents that I had copied to my hard drive.  When I attempt to install the game from this virtual DVD, it always craps out with the "saferun.exe" error right after isact.rar is unpacked.

I am totally stumped at this point.  I installed the game on my Windows 7 work computer with no problem, but it is impractical to play the game there.  I don't know why I am getting the "saferun.exe" error from the virtual install DVD since my DVD reader is not being used at all in this process.

Thanks in advance for your help!  And let me know if I've left out any information that would be helpful.

Do you have another computer to try the install of the game on? EA has some issues with the "Value Games" edition having bad dvds from the factory. So while it may be your system just doesn't like the game especially the way you are installing it, it may also be a bad disk. If you can use Origin, then you might try talking to ea support and see if they will give you a dl code, otherwise try another computer and see if it can install there.

Attempt 1:
Did you install the 1.02 patch? GPF's are common with ME1 launch until the 1.02 patch is installed.
What is the Nvidia revision number of your GPU driver? 6.17 is not an Nvidia revision number. Revision 258.96 are considered to be the most reliable to use.
Its also worth noting, that mobility chipsets are not supported under ME1

Thanks mc and Bog. I was able to install on a Windows 7 desktop PC, so I think the DVD is OK. The Nvidia driver is 185.85. I also tried the latest that was on the NVidia website, but read somewhere that 181-187 might be the most stable. I'll try 258.96.

Maybe it just doesn't like this computer. . .

Oh, forgot to mention. I did patch to 1.02 in both Attempts.

I mean in Attempt 1 (since I couldn't get it installed in Attempt 2)
