Did I mention this is my least fav part of the game? I'm walking in w/ reaper's vestments and wintersbreath and I have a feeling I'm still gonna get slaughtered....
I figure use paralyze to try to stop them? Cone of cold? I'm gonna pick up fireball soon, then work on getting grease later....
I speced SH so at least I can maybe survive long enough?

I think we need more info than that. Who's your party? What difficulty?

It shouldn't be a problem on easy.
I usually take Morrigan instead of Alistair though...and just f stuff up with magic.

It's not difficult with a mage, if you have the glyphs, a few heals and some AoE.
http://modsreloaded.com/skip-the-fade if you really cba with the fade bit.

Put Alistair on aggressive behavior and let Wynne focus on healing. Your mage warden can focus on damage while they f*** stuff up with magic. Also, with mages having access to all of their crowd control, there isn't much in the game that you can't handle. My easiest playthroughs have come as a mage.
While in the fade, try to fire off a fireball against enemy mages. Most have low health, and a single fireball can kill them, or bring them close to death. Against rage demons, use ice spells. Against others, just use what works best. Glyphs, cone of cold, crushing prison and etc. work extremely well.
Don't be in any great rush to pick up grease. While spell wisp has it's use, the rest of the line can be skipped, unless you are after stinging swarm.
Do you have mana clash? While cheap, it certainly can prove useful against enemy mages during this questline.

there's just this one part... I think mage asunder? When about 5 mages always go pew pew pew and I'm dead....and no mater what I do.....I spam health potions and pick them of...I'm sure you know what I'm talking about?
My rogue chucked fire bombs at them... that was fun

Yeah I know where you mean I think, one of the first rooms in mages asunder? You can cast AoE's such as firestorm, earthquake and blizzard (or whatever they are called
) over the walls, without opening the door, cast gylph of repulsion right in front of the door and they are boned.
If you are on PC check the mod i posted up a bit out, it skips the fade, gives you all of the attribute points you would get from the fade as if you did play it, and i think even some xp.

Make use of the forms that you get. There's one room where 4 mages fight each other. You can either get the drop on them, or let them kill each other. Futher on, there's another group of mages that use fire spells almost exclusively. In burning man form, you are immune to fire, while they're not, so you should be fine with that form.
Spirit form is very useful here for its high magic defense, regeneration, crushing prison, and winter's grasp. When I know I'm going to be fighting mages, I always switch to spirit form, unless it's enemies that use fire attacks, in which I switch to burning man form.

Just remember to use your forms, if you're up against an enemy spewing fire switch to burning man, if you're up against something big and powerful (physically not magically) then use Crushing Prison, if you're up against something caster related try freezing it or hurling a rock and then slamming/quaking it repeatedly.
