Well, video-game movies are basically elaborate expensive fanfics anyway, so why the hell not. Like someone said earlier, just because I have an evil female Revan... (which I do, damn Lucas and his fanon :P).

I've already seen the story of Shepard and it was amazing. Why would I want to see it condensed into two hours of bullet points with different actors?

They're expanding their fabase by targetting people who haven't played the games.

So far, Ive read the linked article (takes me to the Australian mirror), and watched the embedded interview, where the IGN girl (Naomi) is interviewing the IGN director (Jim), and nothing has been said about it being about ME1. The ony thing that was said, was by Naomi, stating she would like to see a female Cmdr Shepard, in response to Jims question abotu what she would like to see in the movie.
Anyone have anything that actually comfirms it being about ME1, or is IGN once again speculating, and proving you cant spell ignorant without IGN?

I hope to God that IGN is just doing an asspull, but I work on available data, and the data isn't looking favorable to a good movie.

Neither article, nor interview mentions the movie.
Theres a link in there which then goes off to talk about the movie, but nothing is confirmed, and its just more rampant speculation.
http://au.gamespot.c...ow-science-fact

Writer Mark Protosevich--who wrote the screenplay for I Am Legend and the upcoming Thor film--is said to be in talks to pen the script. Mass Effect isn't the only game-based title on Legendary's slate, with the company also working on a World of Warcraft movie being helmed by Spider-Man director Sam Raimi. The game's story follows the adventures of Commander Shepard, whose ongoing mission is to stop an impending galactic invasion of a seemingly all-powerful alien race known as the Reapers.

They dont have a scriptwriter confirmed, hence no script, and by the looks of it, its just Gamespot's speculation the movie is about the first game.

I even get a sniff of Michael Bay, Uwe Boll, or 3D being anywhere near the movie, and I'll be avoiding it like the plague.

I like the idea but i dont think it should be the games themselves. The Mass Effect movie could bring other stuff to life thats in the series. For all we know this movie might be a filler in a way to lead us into the next Mass Effect game. Its known that Bioware wont let the Mass Effect series die with the end of Shepards story in ME3.
But all the fuss against the film is unfounded until we start seeing trailers and stuff. I mean it was the first trailer of Dragonball when i knew that film was going to suck, even tried watching it on the movie channel and i ended up turning it off after 5 minutes. I mean if it turns out bad it will become forgotten like other bad films have.

You thought Doom sucked? They have plans in motion to make a movie based on the game Asteroids. Welcome to the bottom of the barrel that Hollywood is now scraping.

Oh no. They can might as well call in Uwe Boll, because movies that are based directly on games always suck.

I'd argue that defining a story (and character) everyone has played differently is pretty much a screw up on itself. They should do a seperate, stand-alone story that may or may not be connected to the main storyline, like the novels.

No one is going to take away your experience with your Shepard.  Just think of the movie as seeing someone else's take on their Shepard.  No harm no foul.

Totally agree, I don't know what all the tantrums are over NOBODY IS TAKING YOUR TOY AWAY KIDS!

The problem is the fact the game is a RPG so the story will be condensed and it won't be any Shepherds people have made, in my opinion it would be better to a film about other people but its set in the same universe, like maybe they make ref to game but overall have their own story which never crosses paths with the game ones..

That can be said about anything that's adapted into movies...it can even be said about reboots of movies.

Welcome to Hollywood.

But also realize that that's not always a bad thing. Look at Game of Thrones. What was the purpose of condensing that novel into a TV show when you've already read the book and heard/saw the characters as perfect indepdent characters not as actors?

And then Game of Thrones comes out and it's fantastic.

Let's not judge this before we see it. If it's garbage then it's garbage but the idea is not so terrible as to reduce it to garbage from the moment they started the title page in the script.

The only 2 video game movies I thought were good to watch was Hitman and Max Payne.

Neither followed the video games to the letter. Hitman was more action-ey than the games were and Max Payne barely followed the plot of the original game, but when viewed from the outside both stood on their own merits. :bandit:

No, you're missing the point: people are going to try and use the movie to win arguments about what the "real" canon is.  And the type of people who do that kind of thing tend to be annoying, largely due to not shutting up about whatever it is they're intent on proving.

Who the heck cares about stupid people?

They do. They drag you down to their level, and then beat you with experience.

I would only ever watch a mass effect movie if it didn't feature Shepard or any squad members. Whatever Shepard is shown in a movie is not MY Shepard and therefore I have no interest in seeing his story. If I want to relive the events of ME1, I'll start a new playthrough where I am (more or less) in control of what happens, not watch a movie.

Could've made a First Contact war movie.

Would've appealed to current fans who want to see what's up.
Would've attracted new fans to check out the franchise, possibly from ME1.
Wouldn't have touched any Shepard or decisions done in the game.

Now THAT, if done right, I WOULD watch. A movie starting with the discovery of the prothean ruins on mars, scientists franticly trying to descipher the information stored in the data cach. The uncovering and activation of the Charon relay, the first contact war, the first human ship with humans to reach the citadel. That kind of stuff would be interesting to watch (imo)

Based on ME1 you say?

Does that mean the film is going to have my own personal FemShep in it instead of generic ManShep?

No?

Think i'll pass thanks.

If they follow ME1 and it includes Shepherd, then they are basically saying that everytime they stated there was no canon Shep they were lying.

I will go watch , can´t be worst then the crap of Iron Man , Spiderman Avengers etc , where all the people have read the comic books , or know the story just by reading a wiki .

Oh wait you want to say Mass Effect 1 story is worst then the crap they are showing in the cinema ?
Think for the people who don´t know mass effect , as long they put in the darker side of mass effect 1 .

And do the story correct , instead of a boring paragon , thank you consort ... and yes garrus dont kill stuff .
Bla bla goody goody type , It might be very interesting indeed , Paragade Shepard is the best .

Since canon lore is sadly Alliance Council dies , and Udina is put back on council , let see how hollywood wraps that one up .

I followed a liveblog and they didn't disclose ANY details regarding the movie, much less which game it's gonna be based on. Can I have a source of this claim please?

I dont understand why so many people think retelling ME1 is the only way for the film to have a good story, as if it's impossible for something else interesting or exciting to happen in the ME universe.

I don't buy the idea that newcomers will only be interested in a retelling of the game either. The brand awareness is in the name. How much do you think people who haven't played ME1 actually know about the story? I'd say very little, not enough to have them interested.

First Contact is still the way to go IMO, the story is much better suited to being told in a film.
Start off with the discovery of the Prothean ruins on Mars and how it changes the world, move on to the romantics of space exploration and founding colonies. Find out there are aliens, Oh Noes! They're attacking! Bit of 'splosions and what not then finish off with the first googly eyed humans to visit the citadel.
