I've already seen the story of Shepard and it was amazing. Why would I want to see it condensed into two hours of bullet points with different actors?

That can be said about anything that's adapted into movies...it can even be said about reboots of movies.

Welcome to Hollywood.

But also realize that that's not always a bad thing. Look at Game of Thrones. What was the purpose of condensing that novel into a TV show when you've already read the book and heard/saw the characters as perfect indepdent characters not as actors?

And then Game of Thrones comes out and it's fantastic.

Let's not judge this before we see it. If it's garbage then it's garbage but the idea is not so terrible as to reduce it to garbage from the moment they started the title page in the script.

It's slightly different than a book adaptation. We've already seen the entire story of Mass Effect played out with visual effects, darn good actors, cinematic cut scenes and a beautiful soundtrack. The only difference is that the human characters were as CG as the aliens and the format allowed for a deeper, more enriching story. A movie version will not offer that. What will it offer that would make it better than the original? I can't think of anything. And unlike Game of Thrones, it will be two, maybe three hours long, tops. That's not enough time for the Mass Effect story. Not to mention in Game of Thrones all you needed to look the part for most characters was a medieval-style dress or tunic, not custom futuristic armor or fully animatronic/CG aliens that cost a lot of money to do properly.

Furthermore, Game of Thrones is probably the best example you could choose, from what I hear the author was on set all the time and he wrote one of the episodes. Rarely does that happen with adaptations and I doubt all of the BW team are going to be able to be that hands-on.

I won't watch it if it's about Shepard. I don't care about Shepard's canon, I don't care about it showing alternate romances or choices. The non-choices are the things they'll ruin; Joker, Wrex, Garrus, Ashley and all those other characters that I do care about.

should make a movie of the novels, since 90% of me fans are illiterate, and won't realise i just insulted them.

I don't understand how anyone can think a movie based on the mass effect franchise can actually make money. It is no "star trek" or "star wars" or even "halo". At least some non-gamers have some kind of vague idea of what halo is. but who would go see a movie based on mass effect? Mass effect fans? Most don't want to see a canon film based on a game that lacks a true canon main character. And the franchise may or may not lack potential for a true expanded universe that would be worthy of a videogame much less a two hour film. Non gamers? "What is mass effect?" I hope they don't make a mass effect movie. I think it would be a disaster.

I don´t care if they kill Shiala, the Council, emm if he marry Ash. What I care and I´m concerned about is the fact that is a game of 20 or 15 hours of rich history and perspectives, the movie will end having 1:20 of shootouts with zero sense, they will portray saren as a sadistic bastard and Benezia as her lover (sadistic too) and who knows what the hell they will do with biotics.

Of course, that invites the problem of ManShep vs FemShep.

What problem?

A majority of players played ManShep and it makes more sense to cast a male lead. It's an easy decision.

All depends on advertising before launch and then if it actually delivers a good compelling story I don't think it matters that much. Just don't tell in the trailers that it is based on a computer game and it could do fine.

Edit: And pray to God that not too many critics, with actual say in media, actually know the game itself or its universe.

Has it been confirmed it will be based on the first game? Excellent. I need to verify with a source though.

For all of us, we should all be wary of quality given the history of video games to movies adaptations, but we need to keep in mind for us it is obviously non-canon.

I'd feel good if Peter Jackson was working on this, but Legendary Pictures is one of the best. They would be smart if they used a lot from the games, as much of the dialogue in key story segments are already so stellar that altering would only bring it down a notch.

I've tried to share Mass Effect with family members and explain to them how epic the plot is and how engrossing the world of ME is, I hope that can be translated for them into a movie as much as humanly possible at an excellent level.

And let me say it right here: they should cast FemShep and obviously have Jennifer Hale play it. She can. If not, I'm telling you, Orlando Bloom would be a great Shepard.

So now all the decisions in ME1 get canonised or trivialised. Fantastic. I don't think i'll be watching this movie.

What makes you think that? The movie is just one possible story, just like every playthrough is just one story. There is no canon as long as other media, like the comic books, keep Shepard and his/her actions ambiguous.

I find it funny that they've been talking about a Mass Effect movie for months now, and it's not even in production. Hell they don't have a director, writer, actors or any of that yet.

I'm just gonna say this.

I WANT the movie SO BADLY to be good. SO BADLY....but I'm worried about them fitting a 25-hour campaign into a 2-3 hour movie.

Guys, you can look at it two different ways.

Picture the Mass Effect movie as a 2.5 hour to 3 hour event. Now, compare it to the 20+ hours of game time. You can cut out ALOT of non-important things. Walking around, exploring....returning to the Citadel and other places just to see what's up. Granted, that was where the awe and wonder came into playing....BUT, they can still show The Citadel and other places. Just, in a more realistic manner. It can still work, it really could. Cut out Therum and have Liara on The Citadel or something.

I always pictured the game could make a really amazing movie...they just have to pace it right and cut out the fat.

The producers should design the Mass Effect movie in a 2 part film track similar to that of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I.E. Make it like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and Part 2. Two to three hours can be invested in the first part and the last 2 to 3 hours can be dedicated to the wrap up film. I think that going this route would be better than risking losing out on content that's "awesome" by trying to fit even only the most important events of ME 1 into one movie.

Meh. All movies based on videogames fail, imo, I doubt this one will be any different.

It could have nothing to do with Shepard. It might follow Saren while he does his thing. We wont know for a while.
