There was one critic who initially panned the game, calling it impossible, because he didnt realise you actually had to allocate points into skills, as well as upgade your equipment. I assume you are not making the same mistake?

I'd also suggest, making a hard save before you land on a planet and keep it until you finish the planet. That way if it's too rough you can reload the save and go level up some more.
If you've leveled up any biotics be sure to use them at the start of the fight to give yourself some time to get the fight under control. Tech powers from Tali, Kaiden or Garrus can also help especially sabotage, overload and hacking.

There's a crate to your left... and on the left of that crate is a spot where you can safely aim at the troopers and hoppers while the armature blasts your squad.
If you want to keep your squad safe, just use the 'hold' order on them both the moment the battle starts... they usually take cover (pretty much one of the only times hold results in good squad AI... or maybe I'm just consistently lucky).
Once you're done picking off the peons, command your squad to regroup/follow so they'll be able to take aim on the armature. Sabotage and/or Lift the armature to turn it docile, slap Warp and/or Overload on it to soften it up, then you can literally run right up to it and shoot it until it dies. Though if you do run up to it, I recommend circle-strafing once you're up close, just in case you can't kill it quick enough and it overcomes the lift/sabotage.
If your problem is the Krogan, then Lift/Warp/Overload (do not Sabotage krogan!) and focus fire.
Use sabotage on the rocket trooper, but try to land it so it sabotages other troopers with it in the blast.
Next priority is the troopers.
If you ever see a red beam, sabotage or throw the sniper.

You can also shoot the Armature through the gabs in the fence/wall railing beside it....can only do so if you use a snipers rifle though, the swing is a pain in the *ss, but if your patient, the Armature will fall.

Note: If a mission requires the player to have read the guide and/or have completed the mission in a different career, then the game is not noob friendly
*Unlike the armature, the krogan will charge so you have about 5s to kill him before you have to reload the game (unless you have heavy Colossus armour with X Ablative Plating and/or maxed out Immunity, that is - good luck getting that by time Shepard is made a Spectre)

Funny, I finally gave up on the same mission you're referring to, Therum. I reached the point where you get to enter the mine and you have to take out that big tank-looking geth, and I died and died and died...I finally looked at my husband and said, "This ain't working."
I started over, created a new Shepard, with a different class, set the game level to casual and started playing. That PT was the one that helped me better appreciate the mechanics I was working with, and I gradually started establishing a feel for the tactics the game was set up for. My current PT is on "normal" setting and I'm doing fine. I'm hoping to move the settings up again in future PT's.
Don't hesitate to take your time to figure things out, I suppose.

For the Noobs -
1. XP is your friend, take time to find as many bits of xp that you can, as soon as you hit any new area.
2. Every choice you make at the start matters -- particularly your class (soldier, adept, etc)
but you won't know how it matters unless you slow down and read the class description carefully, with special attention to weapon training.. in ME pistols are used by all classes, so focus on upgrading and adding skill points to pistols early on.
3. Don't try to be a jack of all trades, you will be too weak early on unless you focus your efforts on adding skill points to just a couple of skills --- take time to scroll across the skill bar and see what each point added will do.
4. Keep up with weapon and armor upgrades
5. save your game a lot, repeat --- a lot!

Well, yes, Therum is easy as long as you know that Shepard will be facing a krogan battle master in close quarters; unfortunately it is not possible to restart the mission with a different squad (e.g. if you stupidly bring Garrus and Tali*) so you may be forced to reload a (possibly much) earlier save.
Or, once you see a bipedal Rhino charging you you just do the Time Warp.
Same thing helps you with most charging enemies "It's just a jump to the left..."

To LeonB, Pistols are too weak to be good here, you have to kill the battle master fast before he charge you that's why high powered weaponry should be used instead and Zils always have a biotic with you.
Which is why pistol+master marksman is excellent, since it has the highest dps in the game.

This is a TEAM game (unless u r one of the solo-insanity artists) so use the team to take down the bosses. playing as Cmdr Shepard "solo killing machine" is fun, but ultimately fails for most of us.
Don't get too focused on just one weapon either, pistols are great IMO, but you probably won't get to Master marksman by this point unless you only put points there, which is not quite what I meant. You can get Advance Marksman and add on an early version of a rail extension or high caliber barrel (with penalties) but I grab my shotgun to take down the geth up close, then switch to pistol on the Battle Master, pause to tell my squad to use overload/warp/stasis etc on him. I also back pedal fast to make his charge longer if I mess up. (and use medi=gel shamelessly)
I play as a Vanguard btw...

For the battlemaster fight, hack one of the geth, the shock trooper for preference. This will cause them all to focus and give you time to get the fight under control. Kaiden can then use lift on the group, since hacking tends to keep them bunched up. Either way hacking can pretty much break both fights.

You have to think. Not every battle can be won by shooting straight. That was the first lesson I learned when I went to Therum on my first playthrough.
This. ME1 is more of a tactical game than either ME2 or any other run-of-the mill shooter. You gotta use cover, be aware of lines of fire, and position your squad carefully.
