I say either Rana or Shiala.

Rana just seems like a waste of effort to kill each time you run into her. I didn't expect her to outrun the nuke that she did told me she had some kind of part to play.

Shiala's continuing issues with the Thorian make me suspect that perhaps she and the colonists are morphing into new Thorians.

If the first suspicion proves true, it would be the classic case of the overlooked enemy.

If the second proves true, it would be a tragedy.

I could see either one as a possibility.

I'm thinking this could be Toombs. However, if you used a paragon action, like many did, he doesn't send a threatening message to Shepard, kind of eliminating the purpose of him coming back to kill you after you gave him mercy.

What?

Tombs still sends you the message even if you paragon persuade him.

From: Toombs

What the hell kind of game are you playing, Shepard? You did the buddy
act when I had the gun on that Cerberus scientist, telling me you
understood. Now I find out that you're working for Cerberus?

Tests were done on me that you can't even imagine. For years. Cerberus
did them. They tortured me. They used me as a damn lab rat. And now
you're teaming up with them like they're any other merc band?

I've got my own merc team now, Shepard. And I kill any Cerberus team I can find. If I run into you, don't expect any different.

According to the Wiki, the message can come at any time, including late in the game, which is probably why I haven't gotten it yet. In that case, it is possible this could be Toombs. However, considering Shepard is fighting Cerberus in ME3, why would Toombs still want to kill him/her?

If it must be from ME1 then Shiala springs to mind - something was weird was going on Feros ME2 anyway.

Interesting you say this.  I only just met her again on Illium.  Her conversation after you get the contract changed piqued my interest:

"Is it always like this, the past coming back to affect the present."  Or similar.  Sorry I don't have exact quote.

It made me wonder about the Thorian and Zhu's Hope and the long term effect on Shiala's mind.

Or I could just be overthinking it...it's Charn I tells you!!! Charn...he was the mastermind the whole time and Balak was just his fall guy.

Personally I think it's somebody much bigger than DLC characters or minor-role characters - maybe it is even a character exclusive to ME3; this is only because it was posted on one of the social networking sites and they've tended to post quite big teasers there. That, and it's comicon.

Someone mentioned it not being a ME1 character due to ME1 being unavailable for PS3 - I have to agree with that, unfortunately. Whilst I'm sure ME1 characters will make appearances, I imagine it'll be cameos only due to the PS3 release of ME2 and the focus on bringing new players to the series in ME3 (obviously aside from the Virmire survivor, although they are somewhat in ME2 and are integral to the story - many ME1 characters are / were not aside from the main cast).

The part that got me thinking was the fact whoever says this calls Shepard out by... well... 'Shepard', so it's most likely said by someone who Shepard has dealt with for more than a few moments.

Balak is an obvious choice (and it would be), but I'm wondering whether that is just too obvious or not. I have to agree with whoever said it sounded like something Zaeed would say, even though I can't fathom as to why someone like Zaeed would have to or want to say that.

Honestly, I can't see them taking the time to post / tease us with a quote that is relatively minor to the overall story arc.

It could be Inamorda, the krogan bounty hunter. He was Opold's client back on Noveria.

I doubt it's Shiala, as Feros no longer exists with the Genesis comic.

I may be mistaken, but I believe the quote is supposed to be from someone in ME1.

Balak is a likely candidate, but BDtS was a DLC, would that much trouble be put into continuing an "extra" piece of content?

Rachni queen is a possibility, if she ends up indoctrinated.
Rana's a possibility, but I think she's mostly in the series as a "running" (har har) gag

Helena Blake, Fist, Toombs, Major Kyle, all possibilities, though they're pretty minor characters.

Frankly, I'm stumped

There's no conflict there if you give him the package, unless you think he'll come back for revenge (and a refund) if you negotiated for a few extra creds or gave it to Opold anyway.  And if you don't return the package, you have no choice but to kill him.  I.e., if Inamorda is alive, then you never had the chance or a reason to kill him.

Didn't the dev that posted the quote say, "...something every ME1 player wants to hear"?

Corporal Toombs
Rachni queen
Rana Thanoptis
Shiala (Only when you are renegade and she becomes a commando in ME2)
Conrad Verner
Balak
Vido
Elnora
Heretic geth
Fist
Sidonis (Very unlikely though)

Edit: Removed Niket. He dies either way!

Doesn't Niket die either way, though? When you choose the Paragon path he still gets shot by the Asari.

Did you have the option to dump Grunt's container into space in ME2, or was this just talked about? If so, I say it's Grunt.

I think that if you don't release Grunt something happens to his tank when you're fighting your way toward the Collector base that destroys his tank.

Edit: Added space after "I".

Considering what Casey has said about the recent announcement (femshep reveal) affecting ALL Shepards... I'm going to say it doesn't have to be someone you can kill in ME1 and 2. And so my nomination:

Harkin.

On every one of my playthroughs Balak is either dead or in prison. I had a little fun with him first. Now the playthroughs he's in prison, he could have escaped.

How is this possible?

You either have to let him escape to save the hostages, or kill him and sacrifice them all. Unless you got some kind of secret hack, no one got to drop his ass into prison.

I'd guess it could be an STG member and connected to Virmire. So Kirrahe, Rentola or Ganto Imness.

Or even Administrator Anoleis... :wizard:

Um, no, it's easy:

First, choose to let the hostages die.
Next, win the fight.
Now during the conversation w/ Balak, choose the upper dialogue options.

Result?

You leave a live but wounded Balak there for the authorities to pick up for further questioning and a nice long prison sentence.

I hadn't even considered Morinth. I like the idea of being pursued by a serial killer, but I guess Kai Leng fits that role, which is exciting.
