Regretfully I have neglected my duties to thwart the darkspawn and overthrow the Archdemon for several months now. After loading my save game recently I have realized that my character development could have been done better and level points used wiser. So, after the gruelling tower quest in particular, and 40hrs, I am contemplating restarting fresh with firm character role choices and it should be ok I hope. I am going to use internet help and my own aquired  wisdom to playthrough this time and hopefully won't be as confused.
I do love this game when it isn't being so harsh on me, it is on normal difficulty because easy is just a ridiculous waste of spells and items.
Is it ok to do this? Have I wasted so much time and I could waste again? I've restarted games like Fallout 3 and Oblivion before but hadn't invested 40+ hrs into them before I did.

I wouldn't restart but it is your call. You're the one that has to replay, so if you feel you aren't comfortable with your character then by all means.

Are you on PC? if so you can just use respec mods:

http://www.dragonage.../file.php?id=14

If you do want to restart here is a mod to skip the fade in circle tower:

If you are on console good luck lol.

I must have started a dozen playthroughs before I finally finished Origins. Without actually finishing the game, I felt like I was an expert at the game. When I finally finished a playthrough, it was a breakthrough.

Unfortunately, I have a habit of restarting games, and it takes me a while to finally see the ending credits. I can be a bit of a perfectionist, and if I find out that I missed something or did something wrong, then I restart.

So, don't feel so bad about starting over, as you're not the first, nor the last to do so. Hopefully with your new character, you are satisfied with your decisions and do end up slaying the archdemon. Once you do so, then you have Awakening, Golems of Amgarrak and Witch Hunt to look foward to. Saving Ferelden from the blight is just one part of your warden's epic adventure.

If you're going to use the internet to assist with your next warden, give the wiki site a visit.

Your support is welcome, thanks. Hey maybe I should start a different origin while I'm at it and get a slightly different game and some more achievements this time. You know what,  I think I shall...

Smarter leveling, a better understanding of tactics, and overall familiarity with the game, how to handle enemies and etc. make all of the difference. At first, you may be struggling just to get through the game and having companions piling up the injuries, and then after a few playthroughs, you'll be soloing the game on nightmare difficulty. With Origins, experience is everything.

I'm also on xbox 360. While it sucks to not have respec mods for Origins, you can buy tomes in Awakening that do the same thing. I like to respec everyone and have fun with it.

I have already started once before on P.C. and got so far and got fed up because I was on easy difficulty is just seemed like all these spells and items weren't necessary as well as items coming in abundance I could've had a horde easily. And I only found out about backpacks on my current/last playthrough which I decided to up to medium difficulty so perhaps I will learn more new things or take advantage of runes more effectively (I have dabbled in enchantment). Adjusting it to easy to suit my mistakes just sounds like terrible game etiquette or something, It was all fine until a point my characters seemed too weak to keep alive in more challenging skirmishes and was becoming too reliant on health poultices.
Awakening seems ages away right now but seen as DA2 is somewhat of a letdown I don't see why I won't play if I still need a DAO fix afterwards. I've heard its got a positive reception.

I know this m.o. intimately. I'm notorious for this. Still, with this game, it's not something I look forward to, but I've done it once or twice already.

That's what I have just done after 30+ hours. I felt that I was whizzing through the game too quickly without properly exploring and taking my time to get the most/best out of the game. I am just really not looking forward to doing the horribly boring Fade/circle tower portion of the game.

Believe, me there is nothing shameful about overuse of health poultices.  For some boss fights, even on normal, it will be very very tough to finish without going through a dozen poultices, even with a two healer set-up (which drops your dps).  I definitely encourage you to play with all the extras - runes, bombs, poisons, etc.  They will make a world of difference in the harder fights, and are pretty much essential if you ever try Nightmare.
