I was checking the "what are you currently listening" thread and I didn't see much metal between all the great song.

Personally I'm a huge metalhead. I love all kinds of heavy metal, from black metal to death metal. From doom metal to folk metal.

I was wondering if there are other people here who are self-proclaimed metalheads or who simply enjoy listening to heavy metal.

So, here is my call for all you metalheads out there. Please unity in this topic and share you metal love!

Here are some of my own personal favorite heavy metal bands. It's a very diverse list with different genres:

1349
Darkspace
Dawn of Demise
Equilibrium
Finntroll
Fleshgod Apocalypse
The Project Hate MCMXCIX

Used to be a metal fan myself (my favorite bands were Windir and probably older Dimmu Borgir), but university, for better or for worse, has kind of changed me and I don't consider myself a metal fan anymore. Now I am listening much more mainstream stuff and mostly soundtracks. But yeah, I have good memories from my metal era...

Oh, and I had nice Twitter chat about this with Jean Francois Dugas (http://twitter.com/#!/Jeffachoo), lead designer of Deus Ex Human Revolution. He is big metal fan, so check him out (I've cancelled my Twitter account because I started to be adicted to it too much:lol:).

I'll go with Veil Of Maya - Codex I saw them live last year during Summer Slaughter, they blew the doors off the place. I saw them with Animals as Leaders and All Shall Perish. Mind numbingly good.

I know what you mean!

I used to listen to metal allmost full-time. But recently I've gotten more into classical music like Vivaldi, Bach and Beethoven.

I'm not joking! I would have never guessed I would ever get into that kind of stuff, but here I am, listening to Vivaldi's four season themes! Amazing stuff!

Anyway, back to metal now! *starts up Dawn of Demise*

Yes I know! I've been a longtime Finntroll fan by now. Equilibrium too.

Nice list, although I personally would replace Ensiferum with Jaari's new band, Wintersun.

Wintersun is basically like Ensiferum (same lead-singer and lead-guitarist) but 10x more epic.

Check out Wintersun.

I know about Wintersun. I've always liked Petri (The new Ensiferum singer) ever since his days in Norther, so Ensiferum is still awesome for me. But yeah, I know about Wintersun. Their new album is taking FOREVER to come out. It's becoming the Duke Nukem Forever of metal... lol

Unfortunately, you must've missed the times I posted all my metal songs on there - it was quite a few months ago. I grew a taste for the dark and macabre from all that time on Diablo, and it trickled into musical taste. A lot of the ones I listen to are(Drum roll and double bass pedal please...)

Judas Priest
Rammstein
King Diamond
Metallica
Testament
Nine Inch Nails
Avenged Sevenfold

...aaaaaaand Megadeth. BSN is generally difficult to find metalheads for - though frictional games(Amnesia: TDD) forums are chock full of metalheads though.

I wouldn't say Nine Inch Nails is 'metal'. As far as I know, NiN is 'industrial', not 'metal'.

The rest of your list is pretty nice, except for Metallica. I was never able to get into Metallica. It's all too mainstream for me (I bet I sound like a total hipster now).

Also, who's in for some epic FEMALE LEAD metal!?

NO, DON'T post your Nightwish CRAP! I'm actually talking about REAL female metal singers! Such as:

The Agonist
Arch Enemy
Light This City
Holy Moses

Pretty epic huh?

I personally view Rammstein and NIN as Industrial metal, but I suppose in some cases it depends on the song. As far as Metallica, it depends which albums. Kill em' All, Ride the Lightning, ...And Justice for all, and Master of Puppets were during the less mainstreamy days. James himself has said the black album was when it hit mainstream and it was essentially OK to listen to them if you weren't a metalhead(Paraphrasing from what he's said).

And that doesn't make you a hipster, everyone has a different viewpoint on metal. Much like gamers have different ideas of the best game is, metalheads have varying opinions as well. I prefer a dark grim song, told by an unholy voice - hence my preference for King Diamond and Rammstein. To be honest, I'm not feeling rammstein as much as the old days either - there are certain elements that need to come back from what they did before.

I'm not much for female fronted bands... not to sound like a sexist or anything, but it doesn't really do much for me, lol, that includes Arch Enemy and the like.

Also, props to the mention of Testament. I actually think they're a better thrash band than Slayer, Slayer is vastly overrated.

I agree that Rammstein is 'industrial metal', but I'm most certain that NiN is 'industrial rock'.

rock =/= metal

Also, if you prefer dark grim songs told by an unholy voice then I have some epic stuff for you. Stuff that's MUCH darker and MUCH more unholy than Rammstein or NiN.

Here, try this out.

Well, slayer is backed more by the impression it had on people at the time, I would think. I wasn't even born when they started, but from what I've gathered, they inspired the creation of death metal and all those sub-categories.

As far as female leads, I've yet to hear one that really did it for me. I'm 100% open to it, but there needs to be something more memorable and influential to the genre that just "RAAAAAAAAAAAAHURGGGGGGGGGH!". Flyleaf's alright, if you count that as metal.

Moonsorrow has some pretty dark songs, but most Moonsorrow songs are more uplifting folk-metal songs, yes.

REALLY dark stuff would be THIS (1349),

or THIS (Darkspace).

Slayer more or less is one of the first bands that started using satanic and occult themes in their songs. However, they are more pioneers of thrash metal as death metal is more or less given credit to bands like Death and Possessed as the pioneers of that genre. More of the subject matter of how Death dealt with the horrors of the human body and sparked the whole (in my opinion, god awful) gore death scene like Cannibal Corpse..

But yeah, Slayer is one of the founding fathers of thrash, but as far as the dark imagery usually associated with metal, Slayer is one of the bands that took that and rolled with it.

Funeral Doom/Melodic Doom needs some love here.
Mourning Beloveth (best metal lyrics I've ever read)
Evoken (Soul crushing bleakness)
Swallow The Sun
Saturnus
Chalice (Shiralee Morgan, such gorgeous vocals)
Warning
How Like A Winter
Shape Of Despair
Skepticism
Draconian
Funeral
Forest of Shadows
Just to name a few.
