I just recently discovered this amazing doom metal band:

Swallow The Sun - Lights on The Lake

Great band. The albums Hope and Ghosts Of Loss are exceptional. I love the amount of layers they use during recording to create some truly great recorded tone. When "Gloom, Beauty and Despair" cuts in on its heavy part, it's one of their best moments.

I think New Moon is their best album. But all their albums are great. Swallow The Sun is good inspiration for me, both technically and lyrically. I love them.

Ughhh.. can we try to excuse Cannibal Corpse when discussing death metal? They're such a black eye on death metal imo.

I know they're way popular but it's fashionable to like them. The music they make is downright awful. There's a reason I prefer European bands like Bolt Thrower and At The Gates over American stuff.

Cannibal Corpse is an ok intro death metal band, but that's about it.

Saturnus might not be much of stretch, same style but a little slower tempo. How Like A Winter is another one.  Draconian might be the closest alternative that is much like Lights on the lake style of Swallow. But I would put Draconian on a higher level of quality. Assuming you don't already know about those bands.

Saturnus is okay. Pretty nice.

How Like a Winter is not really my thing. It didn't really do anything for me. Nope. Next one.

Draconian is actually pretty good. Yeah, I like it!. But Swallow The Sun is still better though. Way better actually.

I hope Swallow The Sun's next cd is called Eclipse, seeing how they already have New Moon. I find Swallow a little less original than Draconian in that Swallow recycles their riffs a little more than generous amount, if you listen to them for long enough you can find yourself being really keen to it because its a little too similar. New Moon has a lot of similarities in most of the songs. That's why I don't like them as much now, I used to think they were quite unique, until I listened to more of them more intently.

Well to be honest I've been listening Swallow The Sun almost non stop over the past few days (yes, I like them THAT much) and I still think they sound really unique and original as a band. And I really don't hear them re-using riffs all that much. If anything, I think their albums are consistent from start to finish, which I actually like. I don't like it when artists throw in a bunch of different styles on one album. I like consistency.

With Swallow The Moon, each album has it's unique sound, but each album stays consistent with that sound that's assigned to that album, if you get what I mean.

I hope I make some sense, I can understand if you don't follow me at all.

It makes perfect sense, it is exactly how I felt when I first started listening to them after watching the video for "Don't Fall Asleep (Horror Pt. 2)" That video is pretty amusing, with its Janitor Keymaster of Doom. I listened to them for a few weeks pretty consistantly. It was more minor aspects of Swallow that slopped off for me in time, though two of my favorite songs to cover are by them in Hold This Woe and Doomed To Walk The Earth. I dunno, they certainly are fun to play along too, not challenging at all... just fun.

I don't know if a qualify as a metal fan, I like metal but only very specific industrial-metal bands, I despise death-metal or Nordic-metal. For example, I love Rammstein and Nine Inch Nails, Sepultura...

Nine Inch Nails isn't metal. NiN is rock, not metal. It's industrial-rock.

Rammstein is kinda metal but not really. Rammstein's genre is "New German Hardness" (no I didn't make that up, it's an actual genre in Germany).

Sepultura is indeed metal but not really my thing. They are a mix between trash-metal, death-metal and groove-metal.

Yes, you despise death-metal, yet some songs of Sepultura are in fact death-metal. Ironic isn't it?

You hate death-metal but you love Dethklok? How is that possible? Dethklok's sound is pure death-metal, with some melodic-death influences on their second album.

Wait, what?

New (crappy) Sepultura maybe, but the old school stuff with Max on vocals and guitar? That's just straight up deaththrash and thrash right there. Arise is such an amazing album.

Yes I was talking about the old Sepultura (I haven't even heard their new stuff).

Officially they're labelled as thrash I believe, but I think they have a lot of death and grindcore influences.

I think Sepultura's style mostly fits the grindcore genre. Yeah.

Really? NIN is actually a lot of genres, from electronica to rock and everything in between, I'm sure Trent has crossed the Metal border somewhere with at least one of his tracks.

There is no irony, I don't like every single track from Sepultura.

Summoning is one of my favorites.

Dol Guldur is a staple, must-own album.

Stronghold is an amazing album as well. All of their stuff is excellent. Yeah, big fan here.

I was meaning to ask what you thought of The Voice of Steel when you first mentioned NM.

Personally, it wasn't exactly what I expected at all but I actually enjoyed it.
Even managed to win some friends over to NM with it.

To put it simply, that album blows my ****ing mind.

Wonderful.

They're probably one of the few bands I like where I'm genuinely looking forward to the next release.

Avalla'ch wrote...

I own Lugburz, Dol Guldur, Stronghold and Oath Bound.

I love 'em but (I'm not sure if this is blasphemy among the Summoning fanbase) I think they'd be so much better if they moved to 'real' instruments.

Well, they're just two guys and I doubt they could afford that.

And here comes the fanboy vitriol: I'd have to murder them if they started sounding like Demon Burger.

RE: Nokturnal Mortum, they've had their bleak periods. I really can't get into NeChrist at all; I think it's just terrible. Weltanschaung is better, but not by much.

The NM albums that really showcase them at their best are the ones that aren't blatantly...'political.' I'm sure you know what I mean.

Lunar Poetry
Goat Horns
To the Gates of Blasphemous Fire
The Voice of Steel

I just can't take the black-metal hootenanny hoe-down seriously, even if it is "folkish"
