Okay, so they changed their sound. Big deal, they still sound great and not like every other metal band. They clearly are not black metal anymore but that doesn't make a lick of difference to me.
I don't get the hate. They could completley abandon their older works but they acknowledge that they exist and even recently had a poll to see which album they should play in it's entirety on their UK tour.
This is coming from a guy who also likes more traditional black metal bands. Dimmu Borgir do their own thing and are damned good at doing it.
As far as NM goes, I don't like them for exactly the reason you mentioned marshalleck, their fanatic facism is disgusting. I know it's not "always" a part of their music, but when their frontman has a side project called Aryan Terrorism, I cannot bring myself to support that trash.

Well, they're just two guys and I doubt they could afford that.

As for Aryan Terrorism...yeah, it's pretty rancid stuff. That name alone makes me wonder how serious he thinks he is; it's got to be a joke. Even if it's not, whatever. The music itself is putrid so I ignore it. It's one of the modern wonders of the world...how such genius (Goat Horns, The Voice of Steel) can be the product of the same minds that churn out thuggish bonehead rock that has barely evolved since 70s-80s streetpunk/oi.

Anti-Christianity used to be a big thing but nowadays that's pretty much a staple of most metal and has become pretty mainstream.
So what do you do to show how cool and un-mainstream you are?
Become N azis!
Or at least that's my half-arsed pseudo-psychological reasoning.
Honestly though, if the music is good I can usually just ignore it.

I understand some people can just ignore all that, but not me. I stopped listening to Burzum because Varg is a racist ******.

Eh? I thought they were already using real instruments along with some additional stuff for the uniqueness.GodWood wrote...
I love 'em but (I'm not sure if this is blasphemy among the Summoning fanbase) I think they'd be so much better if they moved to 'real' instruments.
Not to mention it's only two of 'em(and a drum machine) doing the whole project
.And here comes the fanboy vitriol: I'd have to murder them if they started sounding like Demon Burger
Doubt it. Dimmu Borgir is not Tolkien epic enough.

Oh no, the guy who is the founder of NM is most definitely a facist. His side projects make that quite clear. Rob Darken is also of the facist beliefs.
Don't misunderstand me; it's not something I'm unaware of. I'm simply not afraid of it. And I don't apologize for it either. They both make excellent music (with a few duds--nobody's perfect)

That's just my guess as to how it came about.
From what I remember only the guitars + bass are real.Avalla'ch wrote...

I'd hate them but I figure the entire BM fanbase + their own bible bashing kin is more then enough.marshalleck wrote...
It doesn't help that there's now "unblack metal" which is apparently all about our lord and savior Jesus Christ.
A pox on all their houses.

Well at least Summoning's drum machine actually sounds like drums and not a mess of noise. I'm looking at YOU, Mortician. Good lord, Mortician.. some of the worst music I've ever heard. They call that **** metal?
I hate goregrind almost as much as I hate deathcore and unblack metal.

Now that we can agree on, I hate American death metal in general besides the old school bands like Death and Obituary. I much prefer European death where there is some actual melody besides just chugging and "UURRRRRGHHHHHHHH KILL DEATH KILL".

And of course early Deicide, Morbid Angel.
Again, we come back to a discussion of innovators and pioneers, and their legions of followers and imitators who mistake aesthetic and superficial trappings for substance.

Indeed, it's amazing how black metal's early pioneers like Celtic Frost and Venom aren't even close to resembling what's considered black metal today, but back then it was pretty extreme stuff. Bathory is the early pioneer that resembles the sound and the general misanthropy the genre usually has with it.

Ildjarn channels that primal, atavistic fury also. Strength & Anger is brutal in its simplicity.

It's amazing how much people were offended by the imagery and lyrical content back then. It was touched on in Metal: A Headbanger's Journey that Venom is incredibly tame by today's standards and is seen more as ridiculous than evil, but back then it was the most evil thing anyone ever saw. Apparently you couldn't buy Venom albums without bags over them. I guess to prevent the corruption of America's youth to the realm of Satan.. LOL

Speaking of which...
I'm no metal fan, in fact I'm a little leery coming in here. But I've heard this song and want to see what you metal people think of it. I don't particularly like it, but I want to see what you folks think.
Edit: I just listened to one of marsh's links up there, and I guess what I linked is not metal. Shows what I know. Never mind, then.
