Interesting. It's kind of interesting when you think about how many different sub-genres of something there are.

Techno, for example. *hides*

I recently started a doom metal band myself, together with the singer from a different I temporary played in.

I didn't name doom metal in my previous post, but it's actually also a big genre within the heavy metal subculture. My favorite doom metal band at the moment is Swallow The Sun.

Anyway, I hope you have a better understanding of the heavy metal genre as a whole now.^_^

What instrument do you play?

Electric guitar. I play mostly rhythm. It's not that I can't play lead, it's just that my partner is a better lead than I am, so he plays lead, I play rhythm. ^_^

A good rhythm guitarist is often underrated, especially if they're capable of writing some really melodic yet subtle rhythm parts.

I'm a guitarist myself. I'm a jack-of-all-trades, actually: I play a little guitar, and piano, and I sing. I've written about eighty songs so far.
I have a friend (the friend I told you has mono, marsh) who plays guitar, and we were gonna set something up, but we've run into problems with musical direction. He's much heavier than I would be myself.
I guess I'll ask you, Luc0s, and maybe you marsh if you've been in a band, but is there any one member who's supposed to set the musical style? The singer, because he has to sing to it all, or the guitarist, because he has to play it?

And who cares about the drummer. lol

Disturbed (yes Disturbed is technically considered metal lol)
Ozzy (Including Black Sabbath)
Cradle of Filth
Cannibal Corpse
Danzig (Yes, Im old lol)
Kittie
In This Moment (love them almost as much as I love Disturbed)
Stillwell

those are just a few off the top of my head that I like a great deal. Ozzy is on the list because he was the reason I was ever in a band and just a god to begin with. But if I had to choose 3 off that list (other than ozzy), I'd have to go with, in order from best to least best; Disturbed, In This Moment, and Kittie.

I have been, and the answer to this question is they who do most of the song writing. But that's never all there is to it, someone will always have their own ideas as for direction, and it *will* eventually turn into an argument sooner or later.

As for who cares about the drummer? Everyone, actually. Good drummers are rare so bands are a drummer's market. If the drummer walks, that's the end of your band. So if you want the band to sound like you want it to sound, give your drummer handies on the side so they'll back you up in a dispute.

Yeah, he's really big into the heavy stuff, and I'm not at ALL, so i think we're calling it quits for now. it wasn't anything official, just us trying to work together. And plus I have college, too...

And I was kind of joking about the drummer, but really, they're rare? I didn't know that. I think I'll pass on giving my friend of fifteen years handies for his drumming, though. Somehow I doubt he'd appreciate it.

I agree on the drummer being the most soughtafter member. EVERYONE plays guitar, and if you can play guitar you can more than likely play bass. That said, a great bass player is just as important as a great guitarist.

I'd say the next most important position is singer. If your singer has a unique sound and walks, what then? So many bands have had that problem. Some were able to find a good replacement, or in rare cases, an even better replacement but most of the time it's the band's downfall.

See I've always thought it was the singer first, because the voice is most important. That may be just me, though, as a singer before a guitarist or pianist.

The voice is least important in my opinion. Well, in metal it is. Sure, good metal vocals are important, but not more important than the other band members.

The most important part of the band is the drummer by far, but Marshalleck and others have already said that.

And yes, I'm in a band right now. It's a 2 man project for the moment. Pablo (singer and guitarist from Hymir) and I are setting up a new doom metal band. Both Pablo and me are busy with song-writing at the moment. He mostly writes the lead-guitar and singer parts, while I write the rhythm-guitar, the bass-guitar and piano/synth parts. At the moment we use a drum-machine for the drums, but we're searching for a real drummer to replace the machine and eventually we'll fill up the other gaps as well (so we can preform life).

So far, Pablo and I are pretty much on the same line when it comes to musical direction. We both know what we want and we both want the same. We both want to make awesome doom metal and we both draw inspiration from bands like Swallow The Sun and Shape of Despair.

I think Pablo is the leader in our little project, but that's only because he has more experience than I do. He already has produced several albums with his black metal band Hymir, while I'm still a bit of a newbie. But Pablo is really open-minded and always takes me seriously, which is really important if you want your band to be succesful.

I think, that playing in a band is like running a business. You don't have to be best friends with your band-members and you might not always agree, but you have to keep it proffesional and classy. If sh*t goes bad and things get personal, then that is the end of your band.

That's awesome. I play drums. A few years back, I recorded drums on some friends' band's demo. It's pretty rough and most of the instruments were recorded live with no click, but check it out if you want.

Looking for that special someone? Yearning for a dream just out of reach? Feeling cramped, bloated, or having severe stomach pains? Well, do I have the wonder-cure for you. Metal! Known for being excessively loud and violent, listening to metal has been known for relieving stress through the cathartic nature of banging one's head in quick sucessions, boosting both levels of serotonin and endorphins. Provided below are sonic gems guaranteed to give you a healing(yet still somehow unholy?) boost of darkness for whatever ails you. Enjoy.

Rammstein - Links 234
Judas Priest - Painkiller

Anyone heard the new Metallica single? The name of the singer they collaborated with escapes me at the moment, but it was mainly because of him that I didn't like it. It's been slated on YouTube. I appreciate bands and artists trying to do something new and Metallica are big enough to try it without worrying about their next paycheck but this doesn't cut it for me.
