I feel like such an amateur metal fan with my preference for just Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Judas Priest and that kind of stuff while everyone around here comes with black and death metal.
You have solid fundamentals, nothing to be ashamed of. Iron Maiden are legends.
So based on your preferences here I think I have the perfect band for you to check out:
Iced Earth - Stormrider
Iced Earth - Pure Evil
I'll be shocked if you don't love this immediately.
Speaking of Iced Earth and Iron Maiden, I love Iced Earth's cover of Transylvania maybe even more than original.:innocent:

You must tune lower!!! And be more technical, like this. 8 strings tuned to F. (slightly joking, but just slightly)nerdage wrote...
A bit of Machine Head, Pantera and System Of A Down on bass. Most of it I was told to learn for a band that never actually perfomed any of it. Time well spent there.Tommyspa wrote...

Oh, and Do Nothing/B*tchslap by Slipknot if you consider that metal. Fun as hell to play, especially with all the genre changes.
I only play in A standard these days on 6 strings, and occasional 7 stringer when I'm playing with friends.
Edit: You ever play a six string bass? Those necks are about the same as an 8 string electric. I've seen some epic bass players on youtube.

To be honest, Do Nothing was almost the only song to make use of the 6-string I just had to have, found not long after buying it that I prefer 4-strings. No great loss, it was pretty cheap, and I might give it another go sometime. Although I prefer listening to metal to playing it, feels like a lot of hard work to play metal for a hobby without a band to bully me into doing it, seems easier to just play... other, off-topic stuff, since it's just me.Tommyspa wrote...

Metal and fantasy RPG tend to go together you know, even if hessians don't want to admit it in public while trying to look tough.Luc0s wrote...
Great so see that this thread is so alive and that there are more metal-listeners on this forum than I thought.
As I recall, Varg Vikernes (Burzum) was a huge AD&D nerd in his youth. And burzum itself is an orcish word for 'darkness' from LOTR.

Yeah, I had already heard of Iced Earth (thanks to Brütal Legend). They got some awesome riffs. Haven't heard much of them, but so far 'When the Night Falls' is my favourite of 'em.marshalleck wrote...

Matt Barlow is one of my favorite metal vocalists. He's got amazing range and clarity.
The live album this comes from, "Alive in Athens" is a 3-disc set and probably the most awesome live metal album ever released. The energy from the audience is intense...they are LOVING it.

I have a nice sunburn-born Ibanez GSA 60 electric guitar. Not a professional guitar, I know, but for it's price it sounds extremely good.
I must say though, I haven't touched my guitar for over a year now. Since I started my education as a game-designer I hardly have time left to actually practice on the guitar.

Sabaton is so good you named them twice, huh? I can't blame you. Sabaton is amazing.
A band you should check out is StormWarrior from Germany. They're European power with viking and norse based themes.

When I first heard 'Crionics' by Slayer I knew I loved this type of music.
DRI, Exodus, Onslaught, Kreator, Slayer, are some of my faves.
*adding this mention of Suicidal Tendencies since they kick ass*

I've been playing bass and guitar for 18 years. Don't ask me about music theory, I know very little to nothing. I'm just self-taught by ear.

That's how I am, though I can't touch the 18 year thing, that's almost my entire life (21) kudos to you, I hope I can hold on to the passion I have now for that long. I never learned a lick of theory and completely self taught as well. I prefer it this way.marshalleck wrote...

I had no patience for instruction when I was younger. My teacher at the time sent me home after my first lesson, which was how to hold the guitar and play an E pentatonic scale. I practiced that for a few hours, got bored of it, spun up Pantera's "Walk" in my cheap boom box and didn't leave my room until I could play most of it by ear. Ever since then that's been the best way for me to learn--playing along with the artists I revere.
