I have real trouble finding new stuff I like.

Been listening to a bit of the old Sodom and Autopsy recently. Listening to Litany by Vader now. Pretty good stuff.

Because finnish metal is awesome:

Sotajumala - Paratiisin kutsu

Timo Häkkinen is an amazing drummer, and Mynni Luukkainen is just :wub:

Black Sun Aeon - A song for my Illness

Because Tuomas Saukkonen is amazing.

BUMP!

This thread needs to be re-awakened!

Anyway, I'm happy to announce that I'm back in the game! I'm a metal guitarist myself, but I haven't really been active in a band, until now! I've been offered a spot in this band called Hymir.

They're looking for a new rhythm-guitarist and Hymir's singer (who's a friend of mine) asked me if I'm interested. HELL YES I'M INTERESTED!

Congrats, bro. Not my kinda metal, though.

I just started writing with my neighbour, though ironically, it's not metal. Though it sounds kinda medievalish :P

Meh. Being in a band is like dating all those other people all at once. Good luck and have fun, but I got over that **** quickly a long time ago.

I've been in a band before, so I know what it's like. But I've never been in an AWESOME black metal band before, so I'm actually exited to play the kind of music I really love together with a whole band. I love black metal and I know the boys from Hymir. They're awesome dudes.

Ah well, we'll see where this all goes...

Heh don't worry, no offense was taken. ;)

So, just HOW jaded and HOW old are you if I may ask? I'm always curious how old the folks on this forum are. Sometimes I feel very old on this forum, while other times I feel very young (like now for example :P).

I'm 22 years old myself.

32 and very. 18 of those years spent playing guitar and worshipping metal so I can be admittedly over-critical about it, since I've been exposed to so much of the music and metal culture in general by now.

I'm glad you at least seem to have a somewhat functional bull**** filter when it comes to metal. Death/black/doom forms are currently exhausted and degenerate, as is metal in general, but they are the best it has to offer. I'm really interested in some of Enslaved and Nokturnal Mortum's experimental directions, but these bands are not for everyone, for a number of reasons. Most people would think mixing black metal and progressive acid rock would be a recipe for disaster, and to be fair it probably is, but the aforementioned bands have had some success with it. NM moreso.

So you think metal is slowly dying? I think you're too pessimistic. I'm an optimist and I'm willing to prove you wrong. Hopefully I'll be able to prove you wrong with Hymir. I really like the direction the band is taking. Hymir is able to mix black-metal with symphonic parts, but at the same time stay true to the black-metal roots. No happy orchestral bullcrap, but real brutal black-metal mixed with some really dark orchestral parts. I wonder what I can add to that as the potentially new rhythm-guitarist.

But yeah, even though I'm (merely) 22 years old, I know my metal and I know what kind of metal is "trve" and what kind of metal is bullcrap. I'm really critical when it comes to music.

Hey, mr. oldtimer, do you have some good doom-metal bands for me to check out? I have plenty of black and death in my repertoire, but I'd like to expand my repertoire with more doom metal. :)

Slowly dying? No, I think it's mostly dead. black metal was the most recent vigorous development, and that was 20 years ago now and look at the circus it has become with the likes of Dimmu Borgir etc. Also, I'm not trying to invoke "trve." Anyone laying claim to such nonsense is an imposter.

Unfortunately I don't really have any doom recommendations for you. I'm sorry. Of the three, it's the least interesting to me. Just personal taste. Any bands I'd recommend are already on the "Top 20 of the Genre" lists and obvious picks.

Neofolk and martial ambient/industrial are my new fertile grounds. Both share some common lineage but ultimately have little to do with metal musically, but philosophically they can be closely aligned.

That's your opinion. Opinions are like assholes, we all have one and we all think everyone else's stinks. ;)

You think Dimmu Borgir sucks? I really liked them. Yes, I really liked them. I don't like them anymore since Vortex left the band.

I think you're looking at black metal from the wrong perspective. Sure the most famous "black metal" bands suck, but there are plenty of new black metal bands that actually take black metal to a new level.

1349, Naglfar, Diabolicum, Satyricon and Nargaroth, to name a few.

I'm familiar with all those bands. I was listening to metal when the second wave of black metal rose up in Scandinavia, so yeah, I know the genre pretty thoroughly. 1349 is the least bad of the bands listed, and that ended with Hellfire.

My house picks for black metal would be its pioneers. Don't waste time with the followers; nearly all of them miss the point, and mistake stylistic trappings for substance. Even Burzum has these days sadly degenerated.

Graveland owns you and owns metal, but Darken's penchant for dressing up like a parody of a renfair participant has always been an unfortunate side-effect of his contempt for modernity.

Frankly I'm much more of a fan of the second-wave of black metal than the first-wave of black metal. And no, I don't think it has anything to do with my age. I simply don't really like the intentional poor recording quality that the most first-wave black metal bands have. The second-wave doesn't have that intentional poor recording quality (well, some bands from the second-wave still do that, but most don't).

So yeah, you might dislike those bands I listed in my previous posts, but I think they are amazing.

I'm sure you've all debated what "metal" is, so if any of these bands don't meet the criteria, just ignore them:

Manowar
Iron Maiden
Alice in Chains
Static-X
Lacuna Coil
Nightwish
Within Temptation

The last three have been edging towards rock with their more recent albums, granted. I have more, but I can't think of them at the moment.

I was meaning to ask what you thought of The Voice of Steel when you first mentioned NM.

Personally, it wasn't exactly what I expected at all but I actually enjoyed it.
Even managed to win some friends over to NM with it.

I fall more on the punk/hardcore side of things, but I'm a fan of a lot of different stuff:

Converge
Black Breath
Entombed
Cursed
Mastodon
Neurosis
Gaza
Eyehategod
Coliseum
Young Widows
Trap Them
Shai Hulud
etc, etc, etc

All those bands you listed are "metal". Those last 3 bands are "gothic metal". It's really not my cup of tea, but it's metal nonetheless.
