10 dollars to someone who can actually make up something clever to insult #5 with....so far nobody has claimed the prize.
Has anyone made up any clever insults for any of them? "Hipster hair lol" isn't clever, before anyone goes there.
I called #5 "Soccer Mom Shepard." *Shrug*
But yeah, I'm rather pissed off about this whole thing. Bioware may have meant well by opening up this choice to a democratic process, but they opened this choice up to a playerbase that they measured to be "overwhelmingly male default Shepard, playing Soldier, skipping dialogue." Yeah, the most marketable choice may have been proven, but we already knew what the most marketable choice was. Now we're faced with the possibility of having a rather bland individual being the face of the female side of the franchise.
It made me sick to see most people voting based on "hotness" rather than how well the image fit the character, but you know, it wasn't surprising. Average white male gamer, they're going to go for the bombshell. Hell, not even white—just male gamer. They all seemed equally entranced by blondie. Me, I personally threw my lot in for #1. She looked like the most soldierly of the bunch, along with #6 (who actually looks a lot more like a pulp sci-fi heroine than the rest of them). Her design didn't appeal to me much at first, but then I looked at the others and felt that #1 grew on me; especially after seeing #4 (who would have been fine, if not for the utterly ridiculous hairstyle) and #5.
I will acknowledge that many people didn't even choose #5 for the color of her hair. They chose her for the style of her hair. This is reflected in the fact that many people are like, "this one but in red/brunette/black plz!" No. Voting doesn't work that way people. Thanks for inflating the ballot for the lowest common denominator of a choice. On top of that, did you know that this hairstyle is ALREADY IN THE DAMN GAME?
Those going "hurr hurr deal with it!" ought to stuff their fingers under their seat. I and others disgruntled with this turnout, predictable as it was, reserve the right to be vocal about it. It's easy to be smug when you're in the majority, but I opine that it is not a majority you should be proud of. For a game series that has prided itself on being egalitarian and progressive in the gaming market, Mass Effect sure has fallen a long way to pandering with this latest move.
THIS is the Jane Shepard that ought to be the female face of the series. The others should have been limited to being presets at character creation.
Argh.
