Now I remember what was missing in CC... However, beards are not allowed in the army at least here in Finland so maybe there's a reason why it's not included in CC.

Finding an NPC with an unattainable beard is especially insulting, because it means that the resource is already in the game and that Shep should technically be able to grow it. But no. All he can do is stare in silence, envious. He will cry himself to sleep tonight.

Perhaps beards are allowed by the Alliance Military? After all, there's no reason for their regulations to be identical to the present-day US military.

Oh, I agree that it's not necessarily the same. Besides maintaining a "professional" look, it's really just to keep a good gas mask seal. No need for that when a mass effect field over your face can help you breathe in a vacuum.

Commentary made by Joker in the first game (when he suggests getting a medal for pulling you out of Therum) suggests otherwise though. The paragon response if I remember correctly has Shepard say something like, 'You'll have to shave off your beard and stand in front of the brass and make a speach. fun fun.' to which Joker replies that he'd rather not as he'd been 'growing this baby for three weeks'.

Then again, Kohoku and a bunch of other high ranking brass also have beards so... Who knows, it's not exactly explained.
