Nope, I always use the custom face. As for the "serial killer" effect, you get that plenty with Sheploo too.

I usually love the Sheps I make, so for me I don't.

After much testing i found that any custom shepard look bad in certain scenes or lightning, it is impossible to make a shepard that looks good in every scene (even sheploo fails at that). What i settled for is a custom shepard that looks good most of the time even if sometimes he looks odd.

Always go with the Sheploo. Mostly likely will stay that way unless BioWare improves the CC.

Using Mass Effect 2 Face Codes generally makes your custom Shepard still look awesome, in my opinion better than being forced to be Sheploo. What I usually do is I take the code and then tweak around with the sliders until I get a Shepard that is exactly how I want him. Here is the Shepard I always use for my Paragon run and also my canon Shepard in Mass Effect 1, as seen from a crappy phone camera as well (minus the eyes, those are usually Amber, was just fooling around to see how they'd match up to Liara's):

Definitely a custom Shep fan here....Yes, Sheploo looks more realistic, I just find him quite unattractive myself...personal taste, etc...I am hoping BW does us custom Shep lovers a favor and gives us more realistic skin texture and better hair for both man and fem Sheps in ME3...I felt the skin texture in ME2 has been a decent step up from ME1...my Shep looked plastic molded in ME1, but much more realistic in ME2, would still like to see that advance further in ME3 though.

Default poster boy Shep, of course, look nicer but I don't care much for him unfortunately. I always go for custom faces if the games have such an option.

Nope. Have never used Sheploo. I think he looks bland and boring.

Yes, but only b/c Sheploo gets the great facial textures... and the customs get crap. =/

That said, I prefer my custom over Sheploo. (Though, I do use both)

No, I don't feel particularly punished, I like the standard Sheploo, but I have my fair share of customs, aside from the cross eye problem appearing somehow you can actually create pretty good Sheps IMHO, you have to be willing to modify the face for a LONG time and to go through the opening sequence several times to actually see how you look during dialogues (they show angles you don't see while creating) though... I admit this can be a bit frustrating...

You customize the mouth, you run the risk of getting janky teeth.

Actually, by cross referencing and checking with other players, I discovered the janky teeth problem is caused by hair styles, believe it or not...
I confirmed the second one in the list to be causing the problem (the one with slightly longer hair, pulled back, don't know if I explained it correctly), didn't verify for all the others though...

Never felt punished and so far never used Sheploo.

Why have that when I can make my 'OWN' Shepard... *looks at his avatar*... ok make my Shepard look how I want them to look then :P

Besides I could easily destroy most of the points the OP raises...

Point 1: So let me get this right, your trying to say that those of us who DO get to customise are being punished on this... erm? Why? You can't customise Sheploo

Point 2: Who cares? This is a game, not a modelling contest... in which case if it was the latter, obviously the 'model' would win.

Point 3: Hmm... sorry but this falls under the same enquiry as number 1. Being tied to Sheploo hairstyle or having varied choices, I know which I'd prefer.

Point 4: As already ruled out by previous poster, this isn't true, in fact, you seem to fail to point out how Sheploo stupid grin to Chakwas is actually far worse of most of them. I've had custom sheps who when grinning at Chakwas don't look absolutely gorram awful as Sheploo does.

So IMHO Sheploo players are the ones being punished for having to put up with that gorram awful face.

To the OP, no. I pride myself on making face models better than Sheploo.

Perhaps I will take a few pictures from my television and toss them up. I am quite satisfied with all my Shepards, both genders even and would be so bold to claim them better than the default Sheploo. Of course I wholly concede to possibly bias. With that said, you definitely need a combination of dedication and sheer dumb luck to get something you can truly sit back and be content to take through the game. I have had a heaping dose of the latter, creating a few Shepards with only minor tweaks once I got them out of the creator.

Punished? Not really, in fact I think my custom shep looks pretty good don't you agree?
(Sorry I had to take this pic directly with my cell phone since I have ME1 and ME2 on xbox)

Until proper textures are added to the CC, custom shep creators are stuck with: A wax model, a guy who just got glassed over the face in a pub fight, and a 50 year old man.

1) when I first played the game - ME1 - when it was released for  PC I felt  limited compared to some other games where you can create your own character's apperance.  However, given time and thought and patience I've been able to create a pair of custom Shep's I'm very pleased with and have carried over to ME2 and eventually 3. Both look great to me and that's all that matters.  Both are very unique and I've not seen any other Shep's that look like them on these boards.
As far as the cross eyed thing or light/shadows I've seen cross eyes Ash and Kaidan in both games, and seen goofy pics of the default Shep in game, too.  So, it's not a character creator issue.

[*]
2) The hair styles are limited yes, but at least they're not as goofy as what's offered in say Fallout 3 or other sci-fi genre games.  The styles look fine to me and fit my Shepards just fine.[*]
[*]I've horse mouth/teeth on everyone in both games.  Including Liara in ME2 - LotSB. Not a hugge issue.[*]
[*]So, I've never felt ''cheated'' by not using Sheploo.  Is the character creator perfect - no - they  never are and never will be.  Is it good - yes, it is to me because I have Shep's I've made and like a lot.  And that's all that matters to me.[/list]

Yeah it bugged me a bit as Sheploo freaks me out. His added expressions might actually be one of the reasons I don't like him. Still at least it show BioWare are capable of detailed expressions which is a big plus given the whole hair thing.

This. I'd feel more punished by using the Sheploo face.

I agree. And after spending hours making tweak after tweak across several playthroughs, preserving codes and sliders to keep my progress, I feel that my Shep actually looks pretty good. Still, he has to be under even lighting otherwise he looks screwy, but that's true of every character in ME2, especially. Miranda's a great example. She looks great until she's put under bad lighting.

Since they're doing higher resolution textures and doing better lighting in ME3, some of the issues might be solved. I still hope they make improvements to the character creator though, like better+more hairstyles, upping the quality of facial hair (Some of them look drawn on) and making eye/nose/mouth shapes that look like something you'd actually see on a human being.

I personally wouldn't mind a jump in continuity between ME1+2 and ME3, regarding Shep's appearance, if it meant I could make a far better looking Shepard.

So basically what you're saying is you're feeling punished for not using default Sheploo face because the character creator couldn't create nice faces? I've used default Sheploo face a few times but also made plenty of custom Shepard's that, be it after a great many tries, looked quite good. One thing that always bugs me though, are custom Shepard's eyes and expression, compared to default Sheploo, custom Shepard looks so bored and lifeless at times.

I agree on the point that changing certain facial features completely ruins a face, the same was true for DAO, cheekbones and mouth is still hard to get just right. I do think DA2 improved a lot on it and although the face creator wasn't perfect, it was actually hard to create a Hawke that didn't look as if he/she was crippled. I'm having high hopes for ME3's improved character creator.

I don't feel punished, I just feel like the Mass Effect series has an appallingly bad face creator.

I choose Sheploo for most of my male Shepards. The ones that I use custom faces for inevitably end up wearing helmets to obscure their malformed features.

I like sheploo, but after my first play-through with my custom manshep it became impossible to associate the voice with any other face.
