I'm hoping that Thane isn't on his death bed in ME3 and he's instead ging to go out with a bang to save Shepard as he still has one last fight in him and does something that one-ups Gray Fox's death in Metal Gear Solid in terms of epic sacrifices.

The optimal death for Thane would be in an attempt (that's successfull) at saving Shepard.

- A building is crashing and the team evacuates, a big chunk of whatnot is about to crush Sheppy and in comes Thane, pushes him/her out of the way and takes the blow -

Perhaps not exactly that, but something the like.
"I have taken many bad things from this world, you are the only good thing i ever added to it" He says to his son. This could apply greatly as a finish to his character, no killing, no sniping, just saving his only friend from death and slowly fading as Shepard supports his neck or holds his hand.

"I have taken many lives and we have saved many together. I am at peace, my friend/ my Siha"

Thane doesn't need to die....he will be just like any other squaddie, his survival will depend a lot on Sheps decisions.

I personally want a death from Thane to be inevitable, not because I don't like his character, but because I feel that giving the player the inability to save a character regardless of how much they want to will giive a sense of vulnerability that is needed to build tension for this third act.

I want him to save you from a killing blow from Kai Leng. Then Thane and Kai Leng have an epic battle. Thane is mortally wounded but manages to kill Kai Leng. That would be a worthy death for my Drell assassin.
