I really hope he won't pull a "heroic sacrifice". It's just overused, and that's how most people expect Thane to die.
"There's too many of them. Go Shepard! Get the team out of here!"
"LOLWUT I'm not leaving u here!"
"STFU and go."
"K."

What would be really touching end emotional is watching as Thane's health degradates right on your very eyes. At the end of one mission he'd suddenly collapse, breathing heavily. The scene would cut right into the Medical Room on the Normandy where Shep and the crew would sit next to his bed, knowing that he'll leave them any moment now. Add sad music (Vigil's theme would be nice), the crew joking around with tears in their eyes and there you have it- a scene that will be both touching, sad, but positive at the same time.

Well he was mortaly ill and their isn't a cure, so he should be either dead or in suspended animation.

Don't get me wrong I could see a role for him in ME3 tough.
Shepard could ad one point be given the choice to reanimate him (from cryo) to help the team and pose some wisdom that could "help" save a species. Or leave him in cryo, hope you win and hope they will eventally find a cure.
Waking him up wouldn't be a nice thing to do, but if he's got dirt on some Asari to pressure her into cooperating with Shepard, then it would be one hell of a intresting moral dilemma

But Thane said he refuses to die in a bed, gasping Image IPB Personally, I'm hoping he'll cave and get a transplant.

A lung transplant from his son? On one hand, Thane will die and Kolyat will be really angry at Shepard, but on the other hand, Thane will live using Kolyat's lungs and also get really angry at Shepard.

Hm? Why his son? Was that the only viable option? ...Did I miss something :P

Well, since both of them are related, probably. Plus, a lung transplant from an unknown drell would drastically cheapen Thane's story, a. k. a. a cure magically appearing out of nowhere for the sake of Thane living and not angering gamers.

EDIT: Also, according to Thane, the hanar are developing a cure for Kepral's syndrome. Thane may have a chance after all. BUT, BioWare better make this story solid and not give us gamers the impression that BioWare is only giving Thane a cure for the sake of his loyal fanbase.

I think Thane should survive to the end of the game, if he is going to die, he should die in the epilogue. They don't put a time frame on the game, while your playing it, so him surviving until the end isn't a big deal.

And when it comes to a transplant, they said he is a viable transplant candidate, I don't think they would refer to him as one if there was only one person in the galaxy he could get a lung from lol.

Yeah, but how long is it going to take Shepard to find a drell (aside from Kolyat) with lungs that match Thane's? Thane will be dead by the time they find one.

EDIT: And if they do happen to find said drell/lungs, that would feel tacked on and anti-climactic. The cheapest ending to one of BioWare's greatest characters.

Assuming Thane is to die, it should be fighting off an entire squad of Cerberus on the Hanar homeworld in a sneaky-hidey, neck-snapping, pistol-firing, close-quarters-biotic using whirlwind of superassassin hijinks.

I mean, given the timeline, Kepral's Syndrome will very shortly incapacitate him, if it hasn't already.  Best to go out in one final moment of glory, right?

Heres a scenario, the team is on board an important reaper, like a leader of somesort, yous fight your way to the middle of it and place a bomb, someone has too stay behind too defend/ set off the bomb (say the detonator breaks) and he volunteers too stay behind,he and shep share there last words and he says " goodbye my friend, your the only person ive ever called that" he fights waves of husk until the crew is a safe distance away and than he goes out with a "bang"

So you want Bioware to do a repeat of Virmire?

Well if Thane HAS to die in ME3...I guess everyone will be heart broken, as that would be extension mean ALL squaddies (including LI's) have to die in ME3...not good marketing to enforce death on one fan base but not another.

If you reunited him with Kolyat and/or romanced him, he should allow himself to get a lung transplant and save his life because now he has someone to live for. If not, he should still refuse to get the transplant, and he'll die.

In case you haven't seen it and insist that a lung transplant would be a deus ex machinae-sque cop-out the writers pulled out of thin air, it was previously mentioned in his dossier in Lair of the Shadow Broker.

Considering how much they are saying ME and ME2 will affect ME3 is all kinds of ways, I think it's likely that your treatment of Thane in ME2 will determine if he lives or dies.  As you suggested, a romanced Thane will likely live, an non-romanced Thane will somehow make peace with his son and then die in a more subdued manner, a Thane who didn't re-connect with his son will die in some kind of angry blaze of glory.  I'd like to see all major companions have multiple branching fates like this.
