Despite some obvious flaws, the game is much better (and more well-received) than you would think just from looking at the BSN forums. This place is a cesspool of angst.

Funny how you bash DAO in hyperbole when you loved it back in the day. It's one thing to like DA2 better, but not to turn around and bash the hell out of DAO. And I'll skip the popscicle thanks, I prefer ice cream sandwiches...chocolate cookie with ice cream in the middle...yum.

I used to only read fantasy and science fiction.  I would rave about them endlessly.  Then, one day, a girl with a wonderful butt told me about her love of Steven King books.  So I bought the Shining.  Now, many years later, I still love fantasy and science fiction, but I've branched out to many different genres.  I can now see why so much of fantasy and sci-fi deserves the rolled eyes people direct at it.  Don't get me wrong, I'll be buried with Wishsong of Shannara in one hand and Eye of the World in the other, but my horizons broadened and that changed what used to be my world.  These days, I don't want more of the same again and again and again.

DA2 is the same way.  It shines (see what I did there?) a light on what is wrong with making a DAO/BG/NWN game today.  Mostly, that the insane amout of data thrown at you and the filler and flavor text are just that... filler and flavor.  Both of which are fine things and serve a purpose, but when I can choose between 40 hours of meh with some spikes of awesome, or 25 hours of great with spikes of awesome, I'll take the 25 hours in a heartbeat.

Also, in closing, I feel the need to add that yes, indeed, it was $4.95 very well spent.

You want to know how factual some people's opinions are by asking other people for their opinions on the other people's opinions? You can't trust us telling you they're wrong when they say the game's bad any more than you can trust them in the first place.

I think that made sense...

Basically, you're better of just coming to your own conclusions, especially if you already own the game.

More well received?

Have you actually been outside BSN to see how received the game is?

I dare say that BSN at least contains some semblance of  opinion-variety.  Other gaming forums  don't even have that.  It's just Hate.... across the board.  And we're not just talking about metacritic here.   We're talking all over.  Everywhere  where players are allowed to voice their opinions.

DA2 has been like a nuclear bomb dropped on the internet.  Pretty darn interesting, actually.  Whether this near-universal  hate is deserved is a matter of debate.   But whether it exists is NOT.

The world goes beyond the internet, and the internet's like that anyway. Until there's open warfare in city streets I'd say clennon8 might be right.

For me, it's a decent game; not fantastic, or up to the usual Bioware standard, but on the whole it's a solid game. The flaws are a bit off-putting, but the characters were fantastic, and the story (such as it was) was enough to save it from the mediocrity that recycled maps and some poorly implemented mechanics usually earn a game.
It wasn't a spectacular by any means, but it also isn't the worst thing since Superman 64 like it's being made out to be.

All I can say is that it felt like a rushjob to me, and all the flaws can be summed up with that explanation.

If you hadn't bought it yet I would have suggested to wait for afew months until all the dlc is out and you can get everything in a discount pack--if you really really wanted to play it.

...as you already bought it, just don't expect candy and roses.

Is Sunday night when we dig up old, tired topics? Because no one sent me the memo. I'm sick and tired of being left out of the loop like this.

Besides, Sunday night is waffle night in our house. That's tastier and more fun than flogging dead forum horses.

only thing ruining the mood in DA2 is the recycled areas and ninja enemies, if there woyld be about 10more enviroments and areas to go explore then it would be better.
Its all blamed on consoles that DA2 is as bad as it is, the areas are narrow and shallow, while in DAO they were huge and they had more variety than just one straight narrow path.

The new DLC looks to be same old crap as DA2 was/is with its narrow paths and corridors

I liked Origins. But the first fights of Dragon Age II played better for me than anything that they did in Origins. It has its rough edges (gods, the game they could have made without that 48-hour deadline), but I like the pacing of combat much more, and I like the characters (but you have to judge those yourself; nobody ever agrees on which characters are "good" and which aren't). You'll miss some stuff that you liked in Origins, for sure, but I don't think anybody here could tell you how much that will impact your appreciation of Dragon Age II.

I hope they do an expansion. And not an expansion like Awakening, where they decide they don't want to do an expansion anymore and just release the work they've done so far before abandoning it completely, but something with purpose and with the will to actually finish it and support it. They haven't said anything yet, and I'm a bit skeptical that it's enough a money-making proposition for them to actually do expansions ever again; I guess we'll see.

You did, but it's not me. I'm not the one who claimed that it's "hate across the board" "everywhere that players are allowed to voice their opinions" on the internet. But you know, whatevs. You keep fighting that good fight against the man.

I think the rushed nature of the game in combination with a what many perceived to be a patronizing marketing campaign translating to actual tangible gameplay elements such as exploding bodies and lack of detail/reused areas, created a monster ****storm which largely outgrew the actual faults with the game.

It's a sad fact I failed to make it past Act 1 of DA2. Here's hoping you enjoy the game better than most - let us know how you get on.

I liked Dragon Age Origins and Mass Effect 1 but was dissappointed in them a lil cuz I thought the story and character interaction would be more epic.

Since that's what you liked and wanted from DA:O, I'll address this for what you can expect in DA2.

In some ways DA2 improves on character interaction. Their conversations and personal quests are paced so that in each stage of the game they'll have something to say. Gifts are still there. There is a Friendship/Rivalry system in place instead of Approva/Disapproval -- the main difference being that even if you become Rivals with a companion you can still do their quests and still romance them (in Origins, you didn't get their quests or romance options without sufficient approval). There are even a couple of instances where companions will recognise the hard time your character is going through and offer comfort.

In other ways, it's been argued DA2 regresses on character interaction. You can't talk to them whenever you wish, only when the next 'stage' of their dialogue or a quest is ready. Every other time you try to initiate dialogue you just get barks. Because of this, you can't end a romance whenever you want, go to your LI for casual snuggles if that's the kind of thing you like. Unlike DA:O, you can't tell a party member to leave (save in a few specific dialogues as deliberate choices), nor can you get them so angry at you that they'll try to rip you a new one. Most companions' dialogues are limited to a couple of very character-specific topics...there is very little off-topic banter (except between the NPCs themselves).

I don't know how 'epic' you want your character interaction to be, but there's a brief summary. :)

Only not at least not on the 2-3 general gaming boards I read.
