DA2 is worth playing, since stand-alone it has decent gameplay and is set in the awesomely rich DA world. However, compared to other games of the genre, I'd list it along with the other "meh" games that one could play or not play. I played it because I loved DAO and of course want to continue the DA story. So, when DA3 rolls out, I'll get it for sure but maybe not right away or play it right away. However, DA2 pales in comparison to DAO if you want to make direct comparisons. Things that I liked about DA2 included simpifying the laborious tasks in DAO (ease to use potions, less looting, auto-add skills/spells to bar, simplified codex, etc.). Combat was okay by the 2nd half of the game (the 1st half felt very artificial and one touch exploded enemies...uhhh). Going back to DAO makes you miss the spectacular effects. However, the story/locales/characters were definitely simplied for the worse. The story was lame, the characters boring with little interaction, you could barely customize Hawke and the companions, loot was repetitive and had little meaning, recycled areas, mini-map made it such that I didn't even need to look at where I was going, etc. Less depth than DAO and it's the depth I crave.

So, by itself, DA2 is "not terrible" when compared to all the games out there. As the sequel to DAO, it fails miserably. And having just played Witcher 2, TW2 blows DA2 out of the water. TW2 is pure brilliance. The only thing I hate about playing TW2 over DA is that TW2 is so obviously for the guys. I mean, Geralt is a total womanizer and I wouldn't want the book character to change whatsoever, but the game just oozes strumpets and "ploughing" innuendo just for the sake of it, which bothers the hell out of me. But I hope DA3 strives to have the depth that TW2 has. I can never relate to Geralt, but I want to relate to the DA hero, but that's impossible in DA2. Bioware should look at what TW2 has done in terms of mature story and beautiful graphics. They really need to get the RP back in RPG, since, if you don't have that, you just have an action game.

As you can see, mileage varies. I'm currently enjoying my fourth run. I like the story and the combat more in DA2 than DAO, but the area recycling and the terrible camera on PC are less fun. The whole game could also have used another few months development time for an extra coat of polish. There are a bunch of little things (pickpocketing, item descriptions) that I missed. That said, there are other details (the crafting and tactics systems) that I think are better in the sequel.

As for the stuff I really love BioWare games for - the memorable characters and the sparkling dialogue - DA2 has that in spades. I know many people don't like the way they handled companion interaction, but I thought it worked better than the campfire rounds in DAO. I love the companion quests.

It's a flawed rushjob and unbalanced. I'd take 4-6 on the party's level over 100 drooling fools comming in waves any day. The scenery was ruined by low-res characters and those horrible trees.

It'll find a 6/10 appropriate as the story is interesting for one time before you get to know that your choices have little to no impact at all.

No, fans are always whining and b_tching about everything. Dragon Age 2 is pretty good - in some ways it's worse that Origins, in some ways it's better. Give it a try and decide for yourself.

It's an average game which has some poor storytelling and a lot, lot of copy-paste content. There are a lot of games like this, usually rated 60/100. Game has some really fun and enjoyable moments, but flaws often get in a way. It's not atrocious, not all-bad, it's just mediocre and stunningly worse than DAO.

Ehhh, just rent it out. I think DA2 sucked a huge one, but you'd be better off trying it out yourself so you can form your own opinion on it.

Fans have tendency to overreaction. That's just average game with some nice ideas and some flaws.

As with anything, the likeability of something is totally in the eyes of the beholder. If people would let DA2 stand alone instead of constantly comparing it to DA:O, it is actually a good game. There will always be good and bad with any game. Let it be what it is. I'm on play through #9 on PC and completed #13 on Xbox before I deployed. I personally love Fenris more than Alistair, but again, to each their own.

No. And I'd use the term "fans" real loosely.

Depends on which fans you're refering to. If you mean the fans of older games where decisions were relevant and more than three stale, linear options, where party customization was choice and the story was genuinely compelling, then yes, it's as bad as they say it is.

If you're meaning the NEWER fans, who have the intellectual capacity and appreciation for games on the same level as iJustine, along with the expectation levels of a sheep in that you can give them the barest scraps and they'll treat it like purest gold, then not at all. By their standards DA2 is a masterpiece.

Origins is better than Dragon Age 2. But it is a good game. And it is not as bad as some of the people says it is.

And I think it's terrible and worse than people say, so how can you boldly state that it isn't?

I think this is the Hyperbole Persephone was talking about.  Perfect example.  Flawless execution Gleym.  Now excuse me while I go watch Hannah Montana and drool on the floor before I start another session of DA2.

I love both DAO and DA2. It's not as bad as people make it out to be, some people just think it's not as good as other RPGs.
The only really obvious flaws is the wave combat, reused maps and some parts of the story being rushed. Everything else like voiced protagonist vs silent protagonist, quicker gameplay vs slower, etc. just comes down to peoples preferences. You should play the game and find out for yourself wether the game is good or bad. Everyone's different.

I'm one of the players who feels that DA2 is a signifigant letdown after Origins. For multiple reasons. That said, I think it has recived more hatred than it deserves. It isn't a bad game persay, it just isn't up to the standard set by Origins.

Wouldn't fans by their very nature like the game? People who didn't like it wouldn't be fans.

I liked Dragon age two, but it did have some major Flaws. To me it didn't seem that Hawke was the most Important person in Thedas, they were just along for the ride. I like Hawke, but he's not really my character, not like the Warden was. And I've had many Wardens each were a little bit of me. Hawke? He's just some guy I control who thinks for himself.

I have to say after playing Origins even Awakening, DA2 was in a way a let down. It Looks like they've tried to Mass Effect Dragon age....

Well...I think it isn't as good, as DA:O was (especially the story!), but it's still much better than other RPGs. But some ppl loved DA:O so much, that they're now disappointed. And even when it IS a good game, I'm kinda disappointed to.

Well OP...

it's ALL about Opinions, those who dislike it, well say yes, those who don't, will say no.

plain and simple.

asking if a game is as bad as people is useless, because it could be that most people tell you that is not true, but you may end up agreeing with the ones who dislike it, or vice versa.

all you can count is with peoples opinion on the matter, and this is all i can say:

I  Think DA2 is an ugly, rushed, aimless, uninteresting, shallow, dumbed to the point of almost questioning my intelligence (Origins was dumbed down in comparison to BG, but it was still very much allowed to be called deep), repetitive Piece of F***ing S**t that the only thing i ask for is to give me the hours i wasted back, a nightmare of a game with the only redeeming qualities being Varric and Isabela.

i Do not give a damn if something is original, do it well, or F**k it.
(Mirror's Edge: FP Plataforming!!!!
Me: good, call me when the camera becomes tolerable and the controls, well, just bloody work.

Alpha Protocol: Spionage RPG!!!!
Me: Good, call me when you stop being ugly, messy, buggy, repetitive, and boring)

if i was someone who get games for free, i would gladly take into consideration the effort for originality that someone can put into a game,  but i am Consumer who has to pay 60 bucks for the game, i will not put that into consideration unless i like the game, because i'm paying for it.
i want something that can make feel like i chosed right, and DA2 didn't do that.

the 2 best things that i can say about the game is that it made me Replay Origins, ME2 and The Witcher, Origins and Me2 simply because they're better in way and i missed them, and The Witcher 1 because i had completely forgot that The Witcher 2 was coming(even though i haven't completed yet), and i started again in preparation.

/Rant off

there, that's my view, but just play the game and make your own my mind, now one is going to tell you what to like, and just because someone says something is not bad doesn't it's not, it's opinions and no one will ever change that.

The game per se is not that bad. But it comes no where near Origins when you compare the degree of attention and care given to every small detail. DA2 feels rushed and generic. Really lazy at development sometimes, like they couldn't bother even to write proper items name and their story. But I blame the "publisher" for rushing the game out before it could be polished as it deserved to be, given the DA name on it.

Don't mind Gleym, he thinks it's still 2000 and wants every game to be a Torment remake.
