Persoinally I don't like them. They smell (stink) os a cheap gimmick for hte Gears of War/Gods of War, etc.. crowd.

But what ARE they? Omni-tools use a holographic interface..that yelllowish thing that appears around the hand with bottuns and stuff.
How the hell do you kill someone with a hologram??????

I think of it as a ceramic blade, with an edge as thin as a line of atoms, made by omni-gel and held together with mass effect fields.

Edit: Maybe, it has a hexagonal diamond structure that would make it very hard and thus sharp

I'd assume it works basically the same as the Sentnel's Tech Armour, which is also technically a hologram, but can stop projectiles and absorb damage and generate shockwaves when disabled. Exactly how either of them work, though, i do not know, but the ideal of 'solid' holograms is not new to ME3.

OmniTools come with onboard micro-facturing systems, aka a nano-forge. They take Omni-Gel and can build almost anything instantly (Tech Grenades in ME1 for example). My theory is that the unit creates a blade temporarily and then unbuilds when not in use. The exact make-up of the blade I'm not sure about though.

Well.
Its a Gimmick...yes.
Its also a Hologram, that can bloodlessly impale someone, and fake kill them...?

I wondered what else a omni-tool could be used for, imagine a artist that uses its as a carving tool, or a chief that uses it as a spoon or fork, hell maybe there are boxers that have two and make gloves for them self.

Why do you think it is called an Omni-tool?

I don't know, they are some kind of holographic blade that somehow can hurt.

But then again ME universe is filled with tech like that, that doesn't make any sense so it's perfectly reasonable for it to exist.

I'm just saying i would like to see more uses for it, sure its a Omni tool, but we never see it used out side the esblished bounds, it was shown as a light and even able to watch the news, maybe children use it to play a Sci-Fi Action RPG BWONG!!!

Nice. I figured it would be a week, not two months before someone had something to b*tch about on the ME3 trailer. BW says your welcome.

It's a gameplay device, used in lieu of a knife or other such melee weapon.

You're welcome.

What's kinda neat is that carbon, could be a key material for all three, Drones, Tech Armor and Omni-Blades and should easily be found in Omni-gel, which seems to be kept is a semi-molten state, from what I've read.

The main feature that is needed, is the capacity to construct at the nanoscale, with the use of mass effect fields to mold plastics, ceramics, and light alloys with carbon into the various shapes and uses.

Actually no. Tech Armor is just a visual gimmick for a working, lore-based mechanic, aka stronger shields. That light armor is just the "awesome" way to make the player know it is activated.

And the Combat drone is a levitated, physical device with limited programming and a weaponized application, the "Zapper", that got this light-shell to distinguish it from both enemy's and squadmates' drones.

The thinking is the same, yes ... making it look flashy to look cool and to inform th player they actually have the power activated. But they rely on working mechanisms.

However a blade, be it off whatever composition and architecture, still needs to be fixed somewhere if you are going to thrust it into something. It cannot simply extent itself from a holographic user interface and stay there, hovering centimeters above/around anything where it could be physically attached to. And no, no one can tell me those are Mass Effect fields holding it in place.

It is just the way they made it look like. Change the blade's coloring, attach it somewhere and all the yabbering (safe for the most hardcore haters) will stop.

If the blade has a crystalline structure like a ceramic, and is as hard or harder than diamond, then it might not need mass effect fields to brace it to the forearm and be effective against body armor and synthetics.

But ME fields would be necessary to even consider making the blade in the first place.
