MAGNETS!? HOW DO THEY WORK!?

This game is in a science fiction universe.

Wow... ME3 takes place after Retribution which in turn takes place... what was it 5 months after the SM? A year? Something like that... anyways yes I agree completely its totally impossible for new technology to come out in a year [/sarcasm]

If we keep this up, they'll scrap the next gameplay demo or action-packed cinematic trailer in favor of 30 seconds of Neil Ross reading the codex entry for omniblades.

Casey Hudson will pop on the forums to say "Well, we were gonna show you a sneak peak of this awesome ten minute cinematic of Wrex leading a krogan horde against a reaper invasion, but instead you get a stern talking to about science!"

That was probably snark.  But seriously, that would be pretty cool.

Really, a rich, detailed world like the Mass Effect universe, who wouldn't want to hear about the lore as straight up Word of God?  Omiblades?  how were they discovered?  The Lazarus Project?  Tell me more!  Krogan Rebellions?  what events triggered them?

the krogan cinematic we'd see eventually anyway.

Actually, it is basically Ed Elrics metal arm blade, but with hardened omni-gel instead of metal.

In my opinion, omni-blades are just another way in which energy/matter is being manipulated a la omni-tools themselves which can, hypothetically, form practically anything (since they've been described as mini-factories in essence). Really, what exactly is the problem here? Unless you actually had some beef with the existence of omni-tools in the previous two games ME games, I don't really see how you can justifiably complain about omni-blades and/or somehow tie this in to GoW.

Suspension of disbelief only occurs when you choose a subject that isn't well known to the viewer.  Magic works because we cannot rule out the possibility that there are forms of energy we haven't yet discovered,  and because we've seen Magicians.

FTL works because most people don't understand physics,  and because some science indicates Warping space might be possible.

A Holographic lightsaber doesn't work because we've all played with them at our science centers,  and more than a few of us played arcade games that were Holographic.  We know it doesn't hurt,  just like we know that water won't burn a hole in your stomach with one gulp.

It gets especially worse when you spent the last two entries defining it as harmless.

Anyone here ever watch Star Trek?

Even in Star Trek, holographic bullets can kill when the safetys are off, a holographic doctor can treat real patients and interact with an entire ship and humans can interact with holographics objects and people (swimming in holographic water).

I would assume that similar technology exists in a more primitive form in Mass Effect (Omni Blade vs. a Holodeck)

If you understand what makes things solid then it shouldn't seem impossible for a field to produce a blade-like effect. A different process to a physical blade creating a similar result.

And on the subject of where the energy comes from, maybe you should look into current cutting edge theories and designs in the field of batteries and energy storage.

I looked at the wiki page on the Holodeck

The holodeck is depicted as an enclosed room in which objects and people are simulated by a combination of replicated matter, tractor beams, and shaped force fields onto which holographic images are projected. Sounds and smells are simulated by speakers and fragranced fluid atomizers, respectively. The feel of a large environment is simulated by suspending the participants on force fields which move with their feet, keeping them from reaching the walls of the room (a virtual treadmill).

So I just wonder how that tech holds up in Combat situations, outside and away from the emitters mentioned.

Adn the Doctor was intended for emergencies, from what I read.

Hm, is that the only kind of omniblade there is?

I don't really like it. Not very intimidating. Kind of looks like a can opener.

While he was intended for emergencies, the Voyager series fleshed him out as his own character and once he got his mobile emitter, he was not only able to exist outside of the sickbay and holodecks, but he was able to go on away missions, engage in combat and even (if I remember correctly) engaged in sex on more than one occasion.

Bioware has a history of borrowing inspiration from other science fiction universes, so this is a very likely source for their version of the tech and how it functions.

The "omni blade" appears to be a class specific melee attack, which is very poorly explained by Bioware. No-- not what an omni blade, or omni armor actually consists of, but what "omni blade" actually means.

I thought that omni blade = a switch blade that comes out of the omni tool.

BW explains that omni blade = class specific heavy melee attack.

Confusing.

I concur.

For now, I will think of it as some tiny blade that is hard to see, which could be minifactured by the omnitool. The "hologram" part is so the user knows where it is when in use, and to make it look flashy.

Persoinally I don't like them. They smell (stink) os a cheap gimmick for hte Gears of War/Gods of War, etc.. crowd.

But what ARE they? Omni-tools use a holographic interface..that yelllowish thing that appears around the hand with bottuns and stuff.
How the hell do you kill someone with a hologram??????

Holo - made of light.    Lasers are made of light.  Lasers can cut metals and all sorts of other materials.   So why not be able to attune one for a certain depth, just like a lightsaber?  You liked those right?

Probably not, but if the in-game description makes sense, then why wouldn't they fit with what we already know about omni-tools?

Depends on what oyu consider makes sense.
Having some kind of holographic factory attached to your arm that instantly produces stuff out of basicly thin air does not enhance the setting. In fact, quie the opposite. I like tighly constructed and credible universes.
