The marketing plays to an untapped female market (aged around the age femShep five looks) which the "femShep in promotion" crowd claimed exist. Girls that liked Tomb Raider or Metriod Prime, or Final Fantasy or Resident Evil. All looked twentysomething, and, in the case of JRPGs, even younger.

And I have no doubt that femShep will do exactly what they have maleShep do. They'll just swap between them in trailers, they won't split marketing.

That's a market? I know tons of female gamers who like Metroid and FF games (and other JRPGs), but I've never met a female gamer who was more than "meh" about Tomb Raider or Resident Evil. It'll be interesting to see if it works.

You always say something that I can respond to. It's sorta nice; like we have a little pact or something.

I love Tomb Raider. I love Lara Croft. I think she looks absolutely awesome; both with brown and blonde hair. Was she a completely sexed-up character? Yes. Does she look like any archaeologist I've ever seen? No. Does it matter? Hardly. It was still a very successful series and I doubt I'm the only woman who enjoyed it.

By the way, I would fall into that category (age wise, not drooler wise) and not make your conclusion of her appearance. I just happen to like #5 the most, not that I even intend to use a default Femshep.

I am 40 and I voted for femshep #5 :D despite what some on this board might say I think femshep 5 has the broadest appeal of all the femsheps posted that is why she has smashed through 20,000 votes and the other femsheps haven't even hit 10,000 yet.

You would think that being a skilled developer Bioware would be capable of designing and choosing the look of their own characters.

Would you also prefer they didn't ask you about features you would like to see in the series such as the mako, weapon upgrades, story and gameplay mechanics? Instead just ignore all popular opinion and do whatever they want with fans not having any say..

Kind of, i would rather that they had confidence in their own design ability rather than going with what might be popular, don't forget that gamer feedback was supposed to be the driving force behind DA2.

From the view of just character design i find the whole, use a model/actors face, ask what the fans want development as lazy, what's next "For those of you with facebook, the DA3 design your own companions contest".

Glad to see I am not the only 40 year old on the board. I voted for #2, mainly because I can't stand long hair.

Oh, the market's there. You have NO IDEA just how many female Tomb Raider fans are happy that the rebooted Lara Croft is more realistic than the previous incarnations with breasteses fit for buoyancy.

Female Tomb Raider fans might have been happy with the reboot, but I bet Eidos/Square Enix wasn't.  The lifetime sales figures prove it:

Now, that is not proof that pandering to the male gamer is what caused the original Tomb Raider to be a better seller then the last one, but it's hard to ignore the numbers.

That's pretty cool - I'm sure you're not the only one, I wasn't aware of that market, myself - i.e. people who played TR because it had a female lead, as distinct from people who played TR because it was a good puzzle-jumper. Maybe that's a false distinction I'm making though?

All of the women (gamers) I know really don't care whether the heroines are blonde haired, red or black, dark skinned or light skinned, huge breasts or small, even tight outfits or flappy. They actually find such things funny and still enjoy the game and most of them are in the 20's and 30's.

The only time I have ever seen so many people moan about mere hair colour is on BSN. Most of the women who hate the fantasy style heroine tend to not even play games they just see something they consider too pretty or thin or not realistic enough and attack it while at same time a large proportion of female gamers are busy playing and actually having fun regardless. Being even more outrageous sizes for example breasts tends to actually make them find it more funny and not a single one that I know takes it as offensive.

That chart is highly inaccurate for Legend, Anniversary and Underworld. It was released right after Squeenix took over with outdated information, Eidos own financial reports from two months earlier confirmed Legend sold 4.5+ million (biggest Tomb Raider hit since The Last Revelation) and Anniversary 2+ million, very good for a remake. Eidos was disappointed with Underworld sales, hence the reboot. While Underworld's lifetime sales crossed 3+ million, it was not a hit Eidos expected.

Well, I'm a 19 year old male who's happy that she's more realistic in figure and am definitely getting the game next year, so I'll add one extra sale to the new numbers and we'll see how those turn out then.

But yeah, hard to discount the males who bought the game because of the breasteses.

It is what it is, not a single one prior to coming on BSN ever said (as female gamer) that a main character wasn't realistic enough for them or that they felt offended. But on here BSN there's always someone saying such things.

Princess Zelda, noone complained to me that she was too pink and blonde, Samus they liked her, Chun-Li made them laugh because was silly etc.

Not even close. Femshep 5 looks like a misplaced runway model, The Joy is what I always imagined a hardened military badass who happened to be a woman would look like.

Younger 'Boss' from the Metal Gear series.  Look at MGS3/4's Eva... she looked like a misplaced runway model too before she got older:

Did you ever think, when you were talking about the girls who didn't play games, that maybe some of them don't because they are offended?

Anyway, unlike you, the girls I know how game are pretty diverse, rather apparently all being identical.

I know girls who only play guys in games.
I know girls who will never play guys in games.
I know girls who who love "sexualized" looking characters and always pick them.
I know girls who can't stand "sexualized" female characters, and won't play games where they can't avoid picking them.
Most girls I know are fine with crazy-sexualized characters in fighting games and the like, where they only play them for a little time, but hate them in MMOs or CRPGs, where they have to look at them for hours and hours on end.

And so on. So what I've seen is a lot of diversity in female players. I'd not see much interest in certain specific games, but as discussed that's probably age-group or location or something.

As for people complaining about the blonde FemShep being chosen as the most popular?

Of course the blonde one was chosen as the most popular. Why do we see all these girls running about with mile-long platinum blonde straightened hair? Because that’s the look people go for nowadays. I liked the short choppy black hairstyle. I’m still not complaining.

You say you're not complaining but you say the blonde was chosen because "it's the look people go for nowadays".

Is it to hard to accept that I, and as many others, voted who liked most?

You and a lot of people have a lot of stereotypes in your head.

I voted the one I liked most. No matter she was blonde, redheaded, with black, brown hair I would still have voted for her. I just like her face, hair, everything. I said it a lot of times already.

It's hypocrite to say you're not complaining when you voted or liked another one, and state your following opinion as if it was an objective fact based on some "research" you did on "the look people go for nowadays" when I'm sure you didn't.

I voted 5. I'm not ashamed to say it. It's the one I like most. Deal with it.

Besides it's a poll and it has not ended yet. People vote the one they like the most, no one is imposing the blonde over the others.

Blonde =/= Barbie.

1) I am blonde
2) I really don't understand how saying 'it's the look people go for' is offensive to you. Um, yes, I understand you like the blonde, and that you voted for a look you like. It's a look you go for. It's a look you like, so you picked it. I get it and I'm not hating on you for it. All I'm saying is I'm not bitter about mine not being the chosen pick!
About the research thing... No, I didn't telephone around and ask who likes blondes, but hell, looking outside my window? Most of the girls around here have long straight blonde hair. Call it observational research I suppose?
3) I never said, nor implied that blonde = Barbie.

--

As for the other guy who picked apart my post -- I got my impression from my tumblr feed as I said at the beginning of the post. I haven't seen a positive post about this. I don't necessarily believe that they don't exist, I just haven't seen any, so it irritated me.

Lets be honest for a minute and just say this: The reason people aren’t happy with a poll on Facebook is because the one they want to win isn’t.

They can say #5’s over sexualized if they want to, but that’s not the case. #4 was the most overdone and she isn’t winning, so why is that? Well, I suppose you could say it’s because she’s not blonde, but I would argue that it simply is the best hair-style.. It doesn’t compromise her ability to look good while looking practical, and it doesn’t cover up her face. Yes, I’m in the group that doesn’t want the style to be blonde, but I do agree that it is the best hairstyle which is why I voted for it.

I just can’t see why anyone would be upset why they’re giving us an option as to what the default Jane would be, I mean.. options are great, how is this a problem? I would’ve loved to vote on an iconic John Shepard, and it’s a shame that we didn’t.. But really, before now the IP wasn’t popular enough to have an effective vote.

I also don’t see it as a problem that she doesn’t look as old/weathered as John; some people simply don’t age as fast as others, especially someone that takes care of their appearance. With the option of Cosmetics, you can assume that she takes care of herself like the majority of women do in comparison to men. It’s not as if #5’s armor shows cleavage or her body is any different than any of the other models period. And I’d bet that regardless of the hair color, the voting outcome would have been the same. It’s just a better hairstyle.

Everyone should be happy they let the Majority vote, because atleast now you see why they’re doing what they’re doing, and simply don’t just say, lul bioware selling out for extra dollars, it’s a majority rules democracy where the largest vote determines the outcome; and if Bioware doesn’t have a vision for her themselves, that’s exactly how it should be.

This. The reason I see Bioware is letting others vote on this is because it was always what part of the community wanted. Female shepard on the box art and a female shepard trailer. Personally I have certain preferences for the default Fem shepard but if 5 wins then so be it people obviously like that Shepard for their own reasons. It really shouldn't be too much of a problem for fans who have been creating their own canon Sheps for the first 2 games.

i agree completely op. I'm just happy that FemShep is finally being given attention (I liked the fact that they hyped it up quite a lot). Between this and the inclusion s/s content I really feel like Bioware have been listening to the forums.

As for number 5 winning, I don't think it's just the blonde hair. I think that it really is the best looking overall, and even if the hair was black or red it would still win.
