I agree with the OP, but this whole issue just seems to be blown out of proportion. People will disagree. It's the nature of the species. Samara put it right: put three humans in a room, and you will have four opinions. It doesn't make the fanbase whiny. Some individual butthurt people do seem to take the issue a bit too far, but I think that Bioware people can take it, they're used to it by this point.

I also don't see what's the problem with pointing out that the blond shep's popularity is due to her being pretty, white, and long-haired. It's the Western ideal of feminine beauty. And it's sad that for some people propagating this feminine beauty ideal manly=ugly, but it's also sad that for some people girly=not badass enough.

I really hope the high-res textures on the model itself will be tweaked to make her less of a fresh-faced babe, but then again there will be people who'll say she is too old/wrinkly/has a scar and thus ugly. Ah, I guess at this point all I want is for them to provide character creator options to make Shepard grizzly, battle-scarred, and short-haired. That is my feminine ideal...

I agree way to much complaining going on over this.

It was really indifferent to me if Bioware marketed the female shepard, but now that they have decided to do so, I can see them getting more sales for it, so kudos to them. I wasn't expecting there to be a female option (I hadn't played to many RPGs (What I personally consider an rpgs) before) and I have since then been play both male and female options in such games.

As for the vote once again indifferent to me but I voted any ways to put my say in and I voted for 5 and the one thing that has bugged me the most is the people complaining about 5 because of the blond hair, I would like to know why because it doesn't make sense to me, I seriously doubt it is because the hate blond people.

People these days I feel are just to nit-picky over things, from movies/shows to books to video games, people just take some things way to seriously and it sucks to fun out of it.

I don't get why should the official Jane be loved by everyone? That's impossible. How many people hate Sheploo lol? None of the designs is universally loved, that's just unrealistic thing to expect.

I don't use male sheploo. Not the preset version I find him too boy band looks wise. I know some might think differently but to me thats how he comes across. Plus he looks like my brother and would not want to play as him for that reason aswell. I'm long haired I like my sheploo to be so too and not some boy band style army boy as personal preference. For my female femsheps they always have longer hair too and never use the preset for her in past games. For first time if number five wins I can finally use a preset.

What's the OP problem? I'm sure if he/she didn't like something, the OP would likely voice his/her opinion=(COMPLAIN!). Maybe the OP should quit "complaining" about "complainers."

BTW: I also don't like BarbieShep.

Neither of the default Shepards pegged my interest in the game, in fact, at first they turned me off. The game was recommended by a friend and solidified by the knowledge that I could customize Shepard into something I wanted to play that made me buy.

All of those Sheps look like they're nineteen. It's not about whether she's 'pretty' because that's a very, very subjective term; none of those Shepards look like mine, nor do I think they're all that attractive. My real issue is as I said before- they look like identical bratz dolls with different weaves and some palette swaps. That's it. We ended up voting on whose hair we liked, not a wide variety of females that cover the spectrum of what a woman looks like.

Well, they were always going to be somewhat pretty, and unless the key demo somehow changed when I wasn't looking, they were all going to have a young-ish appearance.

Sheploo looked pretty young when he started out, too. And we really didn't get to vote on him, either. Not even just for hairstyles.

As I said, pretty isn't a huge concern, only because pretty is completely subjective- although ignoring a western view of attractive is an issue for a lot of people, and I can't entirely blame them.

Male Shep looked like a grown man in his twenties, and they've aged him fairly well so far. Now we're being told our options are college froshie, possibly tanned with a variety of hair styles.

For the record, although I didn't officially vote, I said in the initial thread that I liked #5 out of all of them, although I wanted different hair colour as I don't find blonde hair appealing at all, as a matter of personal taste.

What's really annoying me is that they're all basically identical to the girls who loiter at malls, instead of one fairly young Shep, and then one battle-hardened one, one who looks incredibly tired and world weary, another who is slightly taller and more muscular and one who is shorter and curiver. Instead, they seem to have literally drawn a basic face on the same model and then made minor modifications, resulting in several faces that look almost exactly the same, minus very minor tweaking of eyebrows and nose size and facial colouring.

To an extenct, that's true for me too. I didn't use Sheploo at first since I thought he was well... too good looking. When I saw him next to Jenkins I was like "OK BioWare, you might have hired a bit TOO handsome model for face scan" lol. He's grown on me but he didn't stop being ridiculously handsome yet people act as if BW only played the sex card with new official Jane.

Also, Sheploo on the ME3 box cover looks different from the in-game shots. In-game, he looks almost exactly the same as in ME1 & ME2, young and all.

You seriously expected different models?

And seriously, where is this idea that the female Shepards look like teenage girls coming from? Do you people live in a place where all 19 year olds already look like mature, strong women?

I mean, am I hallucinating that look in blonde Shepard's eyes? A 19 year old mall brat doesn't have that look in her eyes.

Well said, OP. I think FemShep in and of herself is revolutionary and could care less if she was super-hot. (I was hoping for a more distinctive super-hot, mind you, and felt the given options were a touch... generic.)

However, I've been off this site for a month, so I've got a lot of b*tching to catch up on and probably won't follow your incredibly sage advice.

Yes, I did actually. Why? I wouldn't expect it to be in-game, anymore than I expected Miranda's hair to flow like it does on the cover of ME2.

They have rounder faces universally associated with youth without (for obvious reasons) fat deposits that people who have particularly round faces due to higher weight levels. They lack any sort of wrinkling that we already have in-game that start to develop in our thirties, particularly around the eyes and forehead. And yes, that stuff isn't difficult to portray, even at the sizes we're seeing the pictures of, because they don't have to be the crevices of a ninety year old woman who has spent her entire life slaving in the hot sun- shadowing works just as well.

I expect variety. Instead I saw six girls with identical lip shapes, very little variation in facial construction, a variety of hair cuts and some jaw/chin differences. All are wearing thick smudges of black eyeliner, all have straight, narrow noses and bow lips, with large, fairly almond-shaped eyes, and some are slightly more brown than others.

If we were voting for an iconic male Shep, I'd be just as annoyed. If they're going to give us options to vote, I want variety, not a set of fraternal sextuplets.

I think the fact that the annoucement was something as -relevent- to -all- shepard fans was a -lie-
It was an annoucement aimed at all fans of -female- shepard.

If you don't use femshep, have never used femshep, don't even use femshep, how this annoucement that many waited for weeks to hear was in any way relevent to them can be seen as deceptive.

If they had just been honest from the start and said "all femshep fans come and wait in line for hours we have great news for you" that...would have been fine.

I don't care if bioware took extra time to make femshep models for fans of femshep to vote on. I'm glad to see it gives femshep fans something to contribute to.

What I do care about is the fact it was -aimed- at -all- fans of shepard, and a lot of them were....like , uh...where is the news for -me-

Again just to clear it up.... would have been fine if the annoucement was aimed at the right audience.

To put it in a context you can understand clearly.

"We want all fans of shepard to turn up, possiblly book an afternoon off work if you work weekends, drive hours to get here, maybe even put yourself up in a hotel at your own expense to listen to this annoucement that affects all shepards of all genders and orientation"

Which is what they implied by saying "all fans of shepard"

Not...

"Hey fans of femshep we have an extra special annoucement for you", which would have allowed people to stay at home knowing that it wouldn't affect them....

I'm delighted there is something extra for the femship fans

I'm annoyed they announced it as something for -all- fans of shepard.

Hell I could care less if female shepard got -even more- attention and actual in game -perks for being female, so long as it's not announced as something relevent to -all- fans of shepard.

I really wish more people would take the time to read this and really understand where the "haters" are coming from, as flat out lying in marketing material is a lame thing to do. They said it was a "big announcement" for all Shepards out there. How exactly did that announcement affect maleShepard players at all?

I think they need to learn how to stop overhyping their announcements, quite frankly. This is exactly like the Bioware Bazaar all over again.

Announcement of class skills? Can apply to every Shepard regardless of gender.
Your Shepard's background actually having an affect on gameplay? Can apply to every Shepard regardless of gender.
Locations that you can visit during the game? Can apply to every Shepard regardless of gender.
Alignment tweaks? Can apply to every Shepard regardless of gender.
Decisions that affect how the other races treat you? Can apply to every Shepard regardless of gender.
Announcement of same sex romances? Can apply to every Shepard regardless of gender.
New squadmate revealed? Applies to every Shepard regardless of gender.
Announcement of a vote for the apperance of default female Shepard? Only affects people that play Female Shepard.

That is what people are pissed off about, not the fact that a woman is getting more screen time. If you're going to hype up a "big announcement," make damn sure that it affects everyone and not just a chunk of the fanbase.

I wont complain and i dont understand why people are all through ME sheploo looks like a model and the femshep looks like someone you could make at the character creation screen. This was a brilliant idea with the female sheps! :D

My only issue is that, like the OP mentioned, Fem-Shep's official, advertised look was only addressed after the first two games of trilogy. Why?

As for the look itself, I think it looks fine (the blonde won, right?); I don't see why people are complaining.

Because that is when people started making a huge deal about it. Gender wars: it's the new in-thing.

I think because femshep has been so customized with ME1 and ME2, everyone envisioned their own femshep to be THE femshep.

Mine has black hair in a bun w/ blue eyes and a strong jawline. (And of course the black eyeliner/ eyeshadow) While I think blonde shep isn't mine (and I think she would look AMAZING with deep red hair) I still like the way she looks.

The Blond won?!

...Good god. I was rooting for the one with the red streak in her hair. She looks tough, capable and not to be f**ked with. Not that there is anything wrong with the blond. She's actually..well. Dudebro here saying I'd tap that.

As for why it was addressed only after the first two games? Simple. BioWare never anticipated that so many females(as in, literally half the females at my old high school came with N7 shirts ME2 release, as did about half the males, including your's truly) would actually play their game.

Or hey BioWare hates women and OP should just deal with it.

Or they just thought people would be mature about it and not need a picture on the cover to validate their in-game choices. My guess.

One of the issue is that only sertain people use sertain stuff, while some other people don't use them. What can cause small mistakes in received data. Example not everyone use facebooks or twitter. Not everyone register in game sites or forums. It's the same phenomenon as some people like sports while some others don't care about it. So, asking in facebook is like asking something only from sport fans. Now the question is does sport fans have different view point than other people who don't like sport? So, are facebook people different than some game site?

Of course the blonde one was chosen as the most popular. Why do we see all these girls running about with mile-long platinum blonde straightened hair? Because that’s the look people go for nowadays.

And this is better than the "Blonde Shepard = Pornstar" post how?

I mean, I see something implied with "Why do we see all these girls etc."

Maybe because they, well, like blonde hair?

It's a matter of...choice?
