While I was playing BG2:SOA today, suddenly my main character went berserk (about 5 secs) after spotting an enemy, for no apparent reason. I'm playing as a mage. I have no cursed item equipped and there are no spells cast on me that would alter my characters behaviour. And I can't do anything to get him out of it, except wait till his rage ends.

I've tried to remove the curse, dispel magic, etc. Even after downloading Shadowkeeper and looking at the states and affects, I can't find anything that would cause my character to behave like this.

This issue is mentioned on some other forums, but a solution is never given. Hopefully someone here knows how I can fix this problem.

Does the CTRL/R key combination snap him out of it (you have to have the pointer over him and have the debug mode enabled)?

Nope, already tried that.
Honestly, I don't even know if it is a (berserker) curse or other cureable affliction, cause there are no signs that it is. Except that the character feedback (circles under chars) turns yellow and flees and/or attacks random creatures, including party members. There is no symbol on the profile picture or information at the record page.

Edit: Sorry for double post. Can't seem to delete the previous one.

I've just checked the cursed berserking sword for reference. Other than the cursed icon the behaviour is identical to that you describe (no text notification, no icon, yellow feedback returning to green when enemies are gone, nothing showing in Shadowkeeper).

All I can suggest is you try removing all items and seeing if the problem disappears, then add them back 1 or 2 at a time.

Is it after the point where he gains the Slayer transformation ability?

If your character's circle turns yellow, it's morale failure.

The PC should have a morale of 20 and a morale break of zero (thus never suffer morale failure except through magic), but it's possibly set incorrectly in your game, can you find and edit the morale break stat in shadowkeeper?

@Gate 70: Already tried that too. Didn't solve it though. I'm pretty sure it's not an equipped item causing it.

@Ishad Nah: No, it's fairly in the beginning of the game. I'm not even out of Athkatla. Still in the large house in the Bride District, were the problem began.

@ussnorway: Nuuu, I've played through all BG games over a dozen times and this has never happend before ;)

@polytope: Hmm, your idea sounds interesting. Why didn't I think of morale failure? *facepalm* I'll go look for the stats in SK asap.

I don't think morale shows in SK, could be wrong though.

Is your game patched, not that I'm aware of this being a bug...

@polytope/Gate70: Could not find any morale states/affects in SK. Only:
- State Beserk: 0x00000002
- State Confused: 0x80000000
- State Panic: 0x00000004 etc.

@Gate70: I installed SOA patch v23037 and TOB patch v26498.

Edit: Is it perhaps possible to change morale using the console?

The console just sets the global variables, as far as I understand.

Presumably you installed SOA, patch, TOB, patch in that order. Installing SOA patch after TOB will cause problems, and the SOA patch is optional since TOB & patch should include the same fixes.

From what has been discussed so far it is hard to say if your character, save game or install is at fault. Does a new character have the same problem?

It does various things, I don't see any reference to morale though.
See the IESDP notes.

Yes and no… because morale is (typically) a temporary condition it’s highly unlikely that the game will allow you to save whilst this problem is still accruing but it won’t show up after because the effect has passed.

Try the obvious first… cast heal and remove curse and if that fixes the issue terrific, however IMO the OP problem is script related i.e. a bad mod etc but it would certainly help if he could explain under what situations this condition happens, most importantly… Is it random (almost certainly a bug) or perhaps there some set of events which guarantee the effect?

@Gate70: In the order you first mentioned (SOA, patch, TOB, patch). Probably not. As I said, I've played though BG2 numerous times and this is the first time this has happened. Plus, it (suddenly) occured after hours of gameplay. And is now triggered whenever the character spots an enemy.

@Ishad Nha: I do see some refereces to morale. I'm not sure as to what #106 does (my tech english is not that good), but I'll give it a try.

@ussnorway: I've tried the obvious, but to no avail. I'd be happy to give you more info, but I don't know what info would help. Suggestions?

*Waiting for the weekend to play BG. Darn real life xD*

Just to clarify, morale failure is a temporary effect, morale and morale break are permanent stats - some creatures' morale is better than others, which is why for instance Sarevok, Minsc and Imoen (joinable NPCs with the best morale, in that order) are the least likely to panic if a fight goes badly.

Now, you can remove the "State Panic" effect from your character with shadowkeeper, but unless their morale stat is actually fixed they will continue to panic at the first sign of trouble. I would recommend downloading DLTCEP or Near Infinity if you want to fix it, these are less user friendly than Shadowkeeper, but actually more useful once you get the hang of them. Otherwise you may need a complete reinstall - I'd suggest the former because although it may take longer to learn the use of these editors you can fix many other bugs with them.

Thanks polytope. Don't suppose you know how many other PC/NPC stats aren't shown in ShadowKeeper? Is it just morale or are there lots of others.
