Look up Ovoviviparity.....This is placenta less live birth ,meaning no belly button need live births. This mean they eat other things during devoloment like egg yoke or their siblings...

Havent read into the ME universe that much but in ME 2 at the bacholar party on Illium it gets mentiond that only Asari and Humans have belly buttons
