We all agree that the storyline for DAO was much better than that of DA2, but I prefer the combat mechanics from DA2. Particularly for mages - the swift staff combat and spell animations are far superior. Anyone else agree? Anyone know of a mod that could rectify this? Is it even possible?

Nick.

I put off playing DAII for so long, even though I pre-ordered it, a) because i needed to finish a few playthrough's of Origins and B) mostly b, because of the stupid amount of people saying that it sucked etc. I totally regret putting it off for so long as I think its BRILLIANT. The way a rogue plays is fantastic, attacking with blistering speed and creating decoys/clouds to disorient the enemies. Just started playing a force mage with no tank party which is fantastic. So yes I think that the combat is awesome, I haven't touched Origins in a month (mainly because of the room of 6 Golems in GoA, beating it, then the game crashing a few steps down the hallway and not being able to do it again >.<) but DA2 is awesome.

The companions are a bit uncharacterful (Isabela is still cool) so you don't really get as attached but its still good.

Combat for mages was okay, but playing a rogue felt like watching a hyperactive squirrel on crack. Needless to say, I prefer the DAO combat by far.

I totally agree. Sure DAO had some great spells and skills, I just loved how it felt more hack-and-slash not 'Hit A and watch' Kinda combat.
EDIT: It being DA2

I prefer it mainly for the mages. The rogue on both games is fine with me, along with the warrior but they each have their differences. I find the cool finishing moves is really neat, and how you require dexterity and such to hit enemies, while in DAII you just mash the A button and everything hits, no matter what, really.

I like both, but it depends. I like the Greatsword better on DAII, but Sword and Shield better on Origins. Rogues doesn't matter to me, but I cannot play as a mage in Origins, I just loose too much interest too fast.

The combat for the dragon age series needs to be between where it is in 2 and where it was in origins, meaning that there shouldn't be an irritating delay in gameplay progression which warriors and rogues had to contend with in one, but there should also be a subtle degree of realism to it which 2 lacked.

in simpler terms origins had a sort of winding flow to it which worked but got irritating at times and 2 made that too fluid.

I hope they go back to Origins combat personally, if I wanted to play a hack 'n slash I'd play Fable

I was looking for the exact oposite Mod that you are looking for the other day (DA:O combat into DA:2) but unfortunately I don't think it can be done either way

I love the DA2 combat, but I feel that DA2's DW rogue animations feel sort of lifeless. Almost stiff and forced. It doesn't really look like the daggers are hurting the opponent. But that's just me.

Overall, DA2's combat is superior to Origins' combat imo. The only thing Bioware needs to do now is give enemies the same animations we use, and maybe have them use some spells and attacks like we do (which Legacy seemed to do a little bit). And also make the commander enemies actually command people, have mages help out their allies, etc.

I would have been ok with dragon age 2 if Anders didn't start flirting with me! 

Ahhhh, DA 2s combat mechanism that made me quit my second playthrough just after the prologue.

No, give me back DA:Os combat style much more realistic than, insta flash for rogues, warriors jumping with fullplates and wizards making acrobatics while firing.

I find it really boring to play as a mage in DAO while in DA2 it was a blast. I preferred warriors the way it was done in DAO compared to DA2 and rogues are somewhat in between. I love setting up backstabbing in DAO and I love the faster rogue in DAO so if could be combined I would be in heaven.

Frankly I prefer the DA2 combat I had played DAO when i came out quit it cause I couldn't stand the story and combat (was playing a Mage and Duncan just really pissed me off) so I held of playing DA2.

Finally downloaded the DA2 demo played it and had an absolute blast. I bought the full game and all the Expansion and really enjoyed having a TALKING main character. I have bought Dragon age ultimate just cause I want to know what happened previously and I could load data and change events in DA2 and possibly DA3. Its been kinda a drag to play through it. admittedly the story got better after Ostigar (where I quit the first) and has generally a higher difficultly then DA2 level equivalents I like the multiple origins however despite often having more conversation options the DA2 I never find myself really liking the conversation options it gives me compared to the ones in DA2.

Also while the save the world storyline has been done a thousand times to death and admittedly DAO does the story well, I find that DA2's story is much more personal and revolves more around character decisions then the character being basically forced into the leadership position. Also while both games have great characters I must say of all of them Varric is my favorite. Anyway thats my thoughts in a nutshell

There are a few things I wished were in Origins that are in 2 now.

1) The combat of course.  I'm replaying DAO and, compared to DA2, its just so slow and boring.
2) Friendship and rivalry.  I find this better than the approval rating, my new character is a dalish elf and she's suppose to hate humans.  Of course, there isn't much dialogue to support what I want, but I still have to agree with the party members in DAO so they don't leave.  With the acception of Alistair, Dog, and Morrigan (?)

And one thing I'm glad that isn't in DA2 is...the long fade quest!  I must've died like 50 times, and for things that shouldn't have happened.

Well, there's my opinion.

I want the combat to be paced as fast as possible, when...
1. the way to move is to put one foot before the other, i.e. not teleport. DA lore states that not even mages can teleport, so why can rogues and warriors do in DA2?
2. the enemies move in the same way, i.e. not overpowered gods fighting 100s of drooling fools. DA:O wasn't perfect in this, but at least it felt like they were fighting people.
3. It looks like they're using heavy weaponry. not led greatswords (DA:O) or toothpicks (DA2).

I liked the speed of the combat, it looks more realistic now. But they totally screwed up with the camera.

More realistic?? Nope not even close, it was like a medieval action move*2.

But Origins was really slow, I prefer this speed of combat. Although I didn't like the game very much, I'm playing Origins now.

DA2 is much much better for me. DA2 characters fight like it matters. DAO characters fight like it's a chore interrupting their leisure activities and banter.

No we don't. It's fallacious to assume that everyone agrees with you.

But on topic, I prefer the combat from DA2 as well. It was actually fun most of the time, which the animations certainly helped with. I also felt the DA2 warrior to be vastly more interesting in combat than the DAO warrior.

I felt that the repetitive button mashing in DA2 to get a tad bit boring after awhile and the animations were extremely unrealistic. Thank god that the story was within Varric's tale and that he tends to over exaggerate things.

i wish the DAO combat was... faster. seems like the enemies always strike faster than i do. I hate the wait time between drinking potions on DA2, though.
