I haven't played Shadows of Amn beyond chapter 2 yet, so I don't want spoilers. But I'd like to know, if my party will manage (with the AI improvements of SCS II, but hardly any tactical improvements) in chapter 3, or if it is advisable to do more quests first (I haven't done all yet)?
Party setup:
Faihra (<Charname>): R/C 9/9,
Keldorn: Paladin 10,
Keto: Bard 13,
Amber: F6>T13,
Aerie: C/M 9/10
Xan: Enchanter 12
In-game clue for being powerful is, if I get ambushed, bandit's say: "It's Faihra, run for it!" and leave me alone.
In-game clue for not being ready yet, is Xan complaining I should do more quests instead of rushing to rescue Imoen.
What's the wise thing to do? More quests, or will she be ready?
at what time is SOA chapter 3 doable (without giving spoilers)

I'm gonna try to be spoiler free as I can...
To be honest the ambush bandits are nothing compared to the enemies you will be facing vs in chapter 3. I would suggest get a few more lvls for your single class companions and lvl up both your classes before heading into chapter 3. If I am correct lvl 10 gets you access to lvl 5 priest spells. Which is a boon vs the enemies you may end up fighting depending your choices.

I actually felt quite powerful with 3 of my casters hitting important bencmarks: my Ranger-Cleric PC got her 5th level Priest spells (it's at level 9), Xan got his first two 6th level spell slots and my bard Keto her first 5th level spell. There's no real 'watershed' in sight for my party to aim for, but I might choose to go for the 1 million xp mark.
I don't know anything about what's coming next, but it feels kinda silly getting beyond 1 million xp in the 2nd chapter. Put in other words, it seems strange one would be needing to be 1/3 of the way towards the xp-cap of 2,75 million, before the 3rd chapter becomes feasible? For BG1 this would translate as 50.000 xp., I would be finishing chapter 5 by then.
But I should heed advice when I ask for it and I'm such a noob myself when it comes to BG2.

Well my last playthrough i got to 2 mill xp mark in chapter 4 didn't do all the optional stuff in chapter 2. As far as game balance goes 1 mill mark in exp is normal for chapter 2 going into 3 since the developers intended some players to jump straight into the story via lower difficulties. So if you feel you are having little problem so far then go ahead and make a save and test the waters in chapter 3. You can always consider reloading to lvl up more should the battles prove too much for you.

The answer to CAN you do it with that party is yes... if you think about/ assume that a dozen monsters will drop from the sky at any moment then most of the battles will be easy.

Well. I will just go ahead then, tread carefully and reload if necessary. I'm very curious about what is going on with the Amnish people that put an interest in me and my party and am eager to find out the hard way.

It is certainly doable, many of the toughest fights are optional. You can always do them later.

Very true about the tougher battles being optional, although there is one battle that might put your group to the test. Which happens to be part of the story so no skipping it sadly. Hopefully your skilled at combating Spellcasters.

I'm not at all familiar with the SCS changes, so I can't comment on that, but in a vanilla game your party is fine for chapter 3.

Thanks all for your answers. I've had some experiencing fighting spellcasters in several hard battles in chapter 2 (I already started 3 BG II campaigns though none made it to chapter 3 yet because of my habit to start many campaigns and play them simultaneously). So I think I can handle spellcasters. It was very doable when I had Nalia as well as Xan, but I traded Nalia for Aerie, because Charname was the only one that could heal others, so that became a problem when Charname got Held in a battle. I'll miss Nalia's multiple castings of Breach though.

If i recall Aerie starts with Breach as a learned spell. I could be wrong. But Aerie later on is better than nalia in the spellcasting duties

Even if you find that you are having trouble with the core plot once you reach chapter 3, there is no time limit for it. You can just back out, and continue doing other stuff. All of the "side" quests in chapter 2 which exist to give you the money for Gaelen Bayle are still available.
