I have been playing Dragon Age for a while now. I am not that far into the story yet, I don't think, but I think by now I have a fairly good grasp of the gameplay mechanics. The problem is that, while I have played for a while, I am not making progress because I die several times in each battle and I have to restart from a save. I understand the merits of a difficult game, but this seems way to difficult. I am playing on normal. I don't know why I am having so much trouble. Any suggestions? It is getting to the point where it is too frustrating to play! I am pausing litterally every second to issue commands, and I die all the time.
Too Difficult!

What part of the game are you at currently? Also who are you using in your party and what is your main characters class?

What is your party made up of?
Have you set any self-heal tactics? eg. Self > Health > Below 40% > Use most powerful health pot
Do you have any mages with healing spells? If so, make them a tactic like, Allies > Health > Below 50% > Cast Heal
THis will make it so that the members you are not controlling will auto-pot. Do note that the person that you control does not use tactics & wil have to manually use a health potion, although the healer will still heal them.

Tactics in this game are key... if you are just trying to blow through battles without thinking about strat first you will not win and it it will be hard. Stock up on healing pots and try to have a healing mage in your group as others have said...
Saying that it can be at times difficult on normal, no doubt... also make sure to use injury kits if you have death penalty's... it can make the difference in a fight.

the trick is using the non overhead view to see far infront of you and use range attacks to pull 1-3 monsters at a time. Also it helps to disarm traps so keep a rogue. Lastly, it is easier if you run ahead with a stealthed rogue to spawn enemies then go back and use range attacks.
For battles where there is an event where you start the battle next to tonnes of enemies, sometimes you can run away with 4 party members to a choke point. 1 great example is when all the doors are locked in a room you are fighting in, you can pick a lock with rogue and escape with your party, regroup, then kill 1-2 enemies at a time because they get blocked at the narrow doorway.

I eventually turned the game on to easy. Still enjoyed the game dynamic and died a few times, but it was not so frustrating. The down side is that I finished the game in less than 2 weeks.

more mages, more pausing, find where to get infinite potions.

Are there any negatives to playing it on easy? I know some games won't give you the 'real' ending, some give you weaker items, etc. What about DA:O?

Make sure you have the most recent patch, and don't be ashamed if you have to turn a few fights on easy, the game is a challenge to MANY.
But w/ the patch and on easy mode you should have little trouble. I didn't die once throughout Orz (only time I used easy mode... I was DIEING to get Oghren!)
Also, as others have pointed out, make sure you have 1 mage with a few healing spells. Morrigan with heal and regenaration is more then enough to overcome any obsticle I faced. Having a party memeber with herbalism makes it that much easier too.

Nope, playing on easy just makes the game easier.
LizardLover: If you are finding the game too hard, turn down the friggin' difficulty. That's what it is there for. It's like you're complaining that your toaster keeps making your toast too dark and you have it set to "medium".

My strat for this game always work for me and I'm on hardened difficulty. (Making a new guy and play it on Nightmare soon)
First I set my guys at the corner, away from view and ready to ambush (go to advance -> hold position if you're on the console version like me). Then I get my tank to pull the mobs and run back to my party where they lie and wait. As soon as I regrouped with my party, we ambush them and take them out real easily. I usually pull 3-4 mobs when I run back, so it is pretty manageable and totally fool proof. If I get lucky, I pull the whole mob and clear the whole floor in one pull. This is great against mages because of the line of sight and must break the LoS to attack. This is pretty basic WoW formula.

yea i learned that from pulls in WoW also, but there are some fights where you start a conversation and once you start fighting you are surrounded. The back alleys in Denerim are really difficult on nightmare I wouldnt even have a chance without mass paralyze and sleep. with a 1 mage party using cc and healing, i had to reload a few times to have nobody get injured.

I played all the way on normal, finished last night. For my first several hours I too was thinking "OMG this is ridiculously hard". I had main character as a tank, Allistair, Leliana (more ranged than melee) and Morrigan. I struggled through the Redcliffe and the Urn sections and then I went to the Mages' Tower. Upon recruiting Wynne and dropping Morrigan, everything changed for me. Wynne already had much better healing spells so suddenly I could keep everyone alive easier.
So basically, the main difficulties I had were because of party imbalance - namely, a lack of a healer. (Normally in Bioware games I play cleric so I can heal and hold my own in melee). Its not really a problem with the game.
Other than that, just to echo tips mentioned above - use tactics like "health < 25% -- use most powerful healing poultice", keep stocked up on poultices, lyrium potions, make sure someone can use herbalism to mix potions, don't underestimate using poison on your weapons, and equip everyone with a ranged weapon in secondary slot to pick enemies off one at a time without attracting a huge horde.

Try the game on Easy. It sounds like you may enjoy the game more on Easy than getting all the tactics, builds and positioning in place for better progression on Normal.
There is absolutely ZERO negative effect for playing on Easy. The game's difficulty rating does not affect endings, achievements or your profile.

I had a couple of moderately difficult fights, until I found a good tactics tip: On all your characters, make the top slot: Self -> Health < 25% -> Use weakest health poultice.
Also, some areas you won't be ready for until you are at least a certain level. I got my butt kicked trying to do Warden's Keep when I was 6th level, for instance.

I find that with the "auto pause" setting you can eventually arrange your tactics to suit each of the different battles.

Healing is a woefully inefficient way of keeping your party alive. I recommend stuns, get Cone of Cold.

You could play through on Easy & then make another character and run through on a more difficult setting, unlocking origin achievements etc. Make different choices to experience a different ending.

A very simple way of getting a bit better survivability is using bombs/grenades and getting the Glyph of Paralysis spell for your mage.

That that and more of that. They were a very helpfull addition. Especially early on. Just wish the range was a little longer on them.

I've noticed the game is hard, but there isn't a challenge I haven't been able to overcome.
The part I'm using has no healer, per se. Morrigan has crowd control spells and offensive spells. Although the game can be difficult at times, using Morrigan right, and using smart 'pulling' techniques can net you a win.
The hardest battle for me so far was at the end of the Urn Questline. The boss there was a heavy hitter, with two mages and two melee. I thought I wasn't going to be able to beat him.
With a constant refining of tactics, and one healing pot, I managed to overcome him. There was a little bit of luck in finding a Lyrium pot on one of the corpses during the fight, but it was marginal. I still could have won.
This stands as a testament to me that any battle can be won, even without a 'balanced' party. I haven't used one, but for the mage tower, and I think I'll stick with that through the rest of this playthrough.
