Are you talking about the actual Ranger spec or a Ranger type of character (Like Strider from Lord of the Rings) ?

In Dragonage those are called 'Specializations" Spec or Specs for short.

Ranger works well with any build since it dosnt matter what stats, gear, or anything your character has unlike say the Assassin or Bard specs which use your Cunning attribute to calculate their effects and so require that attribute on your character to be high.

As far as the pets go, the Bear and Spider are better then the Wolf but alot of people use the Wolf anyways cause they like how it looks.
Bear can Survive well and does good damage, Slam also knocks targets prone which works well with the Rogue talent "Coup de Grace"
Spider can bypass armor with its nature damage and its web is a decent stun, works well with "Coup de Grace" again.

I recently tried out the Ranger spec. It certainly changes the combat dynamic when one or more characters can conjure up an ally. Both my main character and Leliana can do this in my current playthrough. At times that is a real lifesaver.

It seems to me that the wolf and the spider are generally the better ones to have at my side, mostly because they are more agile. The bear is useful in certain situations, but in close quarters the bear is always getting in the way and very slow at moving into position to attack. In wide open places the bear is much better.

As a Bard the more Cun you have the better, idealy 60-70 Cunning at least.

Rangers work quite well.   If your build is to be a ranger/rogue/bard then dexterity and cunning are probably the key attributes to work on.  Have a look at the talent tree for rogue, bard, and dual wield to see the minimum points you need to have top tier talents.  The more points the better, but having a balance also is important.  Magic is not useful to rogues, however.

I'd say that as you level up, check to see how your stats are affected by the way you are assigning your attribute points.  For instance, adding dexterity points influences physical resistance, damage from piercing weapons, defence score, and so on.

Also read the talent descriptions.  For instance, when a rogue learns the Lethality talent, it can change the way damage is calculated:  if cunning is higher than strength, Lethality will cause damage to be calculated using cunning.  So if your rogue has more cunning than strength, learning the Lethality talent can be a way to boost the character's damage score.

Bows and daggers use dexterity to calculate damage. Strength is also factored in somehow, but I don't know the exact formula. I think the character stats screen says something like, "Strength contributes to damage from all weapons...." But don't quote me on that.

Any time when cunning is a bigger number than strength is a good time to learn the Lethality talent, because it switches the way damage is calculated.

It takes a while for archers to become strong enough to stand alone in combat. My suggestion would be to pick up a skill like Poisons early along the way. Poisons themselves only work on melee weapons (daggers and so on), but the skill lets the archer toss bombs and acid flasks. That can be big help early in the game. You can also use your tactics menu to have other members of your team to attack enemies that attack the archer.
