Most kid shows in the 80's and 90's aren't really better. Don't be swayed by any feelings of nostalgia.
I very much disagree. Without getting super political about it, I'll just state that there was a major push in the 90's for parents to get involved with what their kids were watching on TV by...*GASP*...watching shows with them. In order to accomplish that goal (which unfortunately seems to have failed as most social engineering experiments do), writers created shows that contained both child and adult jokes/humor.
For examples of this, you need only look at Warner Brothers and their partnership with Spielberg. Shows like Tiny Toon Adventures, Animaniacs, and Pinky and the Brain are prime examples of this thinking. Despite the fact that the social experiment failed, the quality of these shows was far above par. Only when I became older did I start to understand the frequent adult references as well as the ones for children.
This focus on more adult themes can be seem in all sorts of other 90's shows. Perfect example would be the X-Men and Spiderman Marvel cartoons. The characters were EXTREMELY accurate to those in the comics. They dealt with adult situations involving relationships, death, family, etc.
Now look at the recent X-Men cartoons produced. All I see from today's kids shows is teenage angst. That's what the focus is now. That's the shift in society. Shows today are all about teenage problems, not adult ones. And those of us who have gotten older know that teenage problems are nothing. That's why these shows today suck. They deal with nothing.
Edit: Oh lord, how could I have forgotten Batman: The Animated Series from the 90's. That was a friggin' dark masterpiece.
