personally i vastly prefer Meer over Hale.

Hale if you take it out of context and show one line, it might sound better, but its inconsistent as hell, in a single short conversation she can sound like 5 different people with wildly different emotional inflections. nice femshep sounds COMPLETELY different than angry femshep, like as in a different person.

Meer while doesnt hit the emotional highnotes quite as well. he's consistant and believable the entire time. he always sounds like hte same person, for each emotional high moment he only goes up a few notches that way its not super weird sounding going to a emotionally-neutral investigate option lol.

Well, Hale's voice is usually (there are exceptions) better in situations where Shepard is talking softly, especially in on hubs and normandy. Meer's voice feels better than in war settings, like when he is talking to the Krogan in the Mordin's loyalty mission. Also, I find his suicide mission speech much better than Hale's.

He does a pretty good job and he's a great voice actor with a very large range, I understand why people find Shepard's voice acting a bit bland and inconsistent at times though.

In that video with the Geth base they showed of ME 3 Shepard actually makes a grunt/yelling sound when falling down and it sounded kind of good and makes me think that he is actually going to do a better voice acting job in ME 3. Just a thought.

EDIT: Did you guys know Mark Meer voices the Vorcha? He also voiced Mordin in the E3 content (as most of us know) and did a pretty good job too. So I wouldn't say he's a bad voice actor, its just that the role of Shepard is kind of a hard role to pin down.

you missed the point entirely.

meer purposely sounds calm cool and controlled at all times, that way he's not going from a high emotional line to a low emotional line back to back. so selecting different lines of dialogue sounds more natural and less awkward. hale is all over the place and it drives me nuts, people go nuts cus she makes herself sound super emotional one line and then is monotone as hell the next, its immersion breaking...

If I attacked you I'm 99% sure it would be a 1-way battle. I'm 5'11 and 220 pounds (and I'm not fat). Given this, what reason would I have to be intimidated by you? There are men who get intimidated by women on other levels (authority, sexual, professional, competitive, etc), but intimidated or scared of a woman as a physical threat? Not unless that guy is very small and scrawny or the woman is very tall and fat. Even in the later situation the women is still more likely to lose the fight against a healthy average sized male.

People want to turn this into a sexism issue. I'm not going to be politically correct at the expense of my integrity. Political correctness in alot of cases is plain old lying in order to not step on people's feelings.

I like both Meer and Hale's performances as Shepard and I don't understand the hatred for one or the other. Meer maybe more consistent and Hale more emotional but I like that difference in my Shepards.

I didn't used to like playing as manShep but that had nothing to do with the voice and all to do with my prejudice against playing as a male character. I got over it once I created a face that I could live with for an entire game.

You obviously haven't dealt with Martial Arts then...I will never forget the Pocket Rocket Sensei we had in Ninjukai Taijutsu...tiny woman creaming men three times her size on the mats, they didn't stand a chance....spent more time on their backs than their feet...

I have.

Martial arts are great but in many respects it sometimes gives people a false confidence. This applies to men and women. It does not make you superman/superwoman.

Twilight God may be un-PC, but he's right in that most men are physically stronger than women. Of course there are exceptions to every rule.

If she is the teacher and they are the students I would expect her to be better at the art of Taijutsu than her students. Taking this into consideration, if these men play by the rules and come at her with predictable Taijutsu manuveurs she should be able to react accordingly. However, in a straight street fight she'd probably get knocked out.

This idea that martial arts = win is a myth. It can make a difference in a fight between two people of relative size and strength, but a large person who isn't fighting like a 10 year old will more times then not win if pitted against a smaller, weaker person. I've had my share of fights with smaller men who took up martial arts thinking they were hot stuff. They were quickly put in their place. And that was before I took up combat hapkido.

But none of this really matters. I personally don't consider women to be physical threats. That is simply the way my life experiences has conditioned me. When I was younger and there were girls who were bigger than me, yes. I looked at fighting a girl no differently than fighting a boy. But childhood is over. Most women I know have to drag weight that I can lift with one hand. That's just how nature works.

Not really, I'm cool with chill people, it's mostly just the manShep fanatics that get on my nerves.

You can like Meer all you want, call him the best version of Shep, whatever.  But the producers are going to Hale first.

What if a 5 year old or a 105 year old man with an oxygen tank in a wheelchair has a gun?

Is it the person holding the gun that is intimidating or the gun?

The person.  That gun isn't going to shoot by itself.

See, that's why I have to lol at you.  Technology has made men mostly irrelevant; all your muscle and training and a kid could down you with one shot...

I think Hale treats Paragon Shepard and Renegade Shepard as two distinct characters.
Meer treats them as different moods/tones of the same character.

But that's just how it comes off to me.

Bolded comments...true, true and true....no argument at all....What it does though, if people utilize it as a tool not as bragging rights badge of some sort...is teach you the limits of the human body and various ways in which you can exploit those limits....simple eg. the shoulder, elbow, wrist, knee, ect...only bend so far...where the center of the body mass is, ways it can be used to your advantage...how to use the whole of your body as a tool....It's not meant to be a set of throws, locks, hits, kicks, rolls, grapples, etc...randomly patched together to produce a fighting marvel, the point is to teach your mind and body to realize potentials and limits so much so that they become ingrained as part of the whole you and reaction to threat becomes an automatic response, not a thought out procedure.....It has been interesting to note in real life circumstance how it works....my daughters have done this Art also....some time ago, my eldest daughter fell down a flight of stairs, she immediantly without thought tucked her head into her chest and threw her arms into 'break fall'...she came out a little sore but unscathed...my younger daughter, an older girl attacked and tried to beat her whilst on her way home from school in our local park....she managed to block and parry every blow this kid tried to land on her...as an interesting side note to this, this younger daughter of mine also is mildly mentally disabled, just goes to show what can be instilled in a brain....I, myself have also inadvertantly used it on occasion, only becoming aware after the incident.

The beauty of Ninjukai is among the higher belts, if a combatant uses set throws, locks, hits, kicks, grapples, etc...they lose...the whole point is not to learn a set of certain procedures, but to learn how the body works, limits, etc...if you use set procedure you are predictable, the idea is to understand the body and utilize what opportunities present themselves in any given situation at the time....reliable use of body knowledge, not some perfect by the book throw.

The larger they are the harder they fall...there is a trueism to that.

No offense but the same can be said about some pretentious and hardcore FemShep fans who feel like they have to belittle Mark Meer's performance to make their point. It's unwarranted. And pretty sad.
Numerous times I have witnessed an incredible inferiority complex.

I actually find Mark Meer's voice acting MUCH better than the exaggerated and overreacting anime dub as delivered by Hale which seems to be praised to heavens on these boards. Again, she sounded just fine as Jennifer Mui, Bastila Shan or Mazzy Fentan but her work in ME seems to be..not so much(at least not in the Renegade department:P).

While Meer on the other hand seems to fit more the image of a battle-scarred Veteran Spectre who's speech is not so obviously acted like Hale's.
People say he's monotone. I say he's more natural, stoic and all-around badass, you don't usually speak in the Military like on the stage.

Bottom line: I can play as both. I just prefer the ultimate alpha male male counterpart to better connect with the charatcer.:wizard:

EDIT: That's of course only my opinion. All of that.

Only problem is, if you make a male Shepard you MUST make him white, simply because Meer has the whitest voice ever heard on the face of the planet. I lent ME to my friend who tried to make a shepard that resembled him (black of the Wesley Snipes caliber) and it just sounded ****ed. No black man sounds like Mark Meer, and vice versa. Nothing is wrong with Mark Meer, they just should have picked an actor with a voice more applicable to more races.

Meer sounds Canadian. I have a friend who sounds pretty much like him, and he's not white at all.
