Only problem is, if you make a male Shepard you MUST make him white, simply because Meer has the whitest voice ever heard on the face of the planet. I lent ME to my friend who tried to make a shepard that resembled him (black of the Wesley Snipes caliber) and it just sounded ****ed. No black man sounds like Mark Meer, and vice versa. Nothing is wrong with Mark Meer, they just should have picked an actor with a voice more applicable to more races.

I disagree... while he doesn't sound like every black person (just like he doesn't sound like every white person)... he does fit a number of them.

I don't hate Meer's performance, but I do think that he could do better. He delivers his lines very flatly and has very little emotional range in his voice acting. Even just a little more emotion would make me happy. Hale has a much wider emotional range and delivers her lines well. I just kinda wish her voice wasn't so deep sometimes. Even slightly higher would be nice.

However, after learning that Mark Meer played Jethann in DA2, I've learned to give him some more credit. :D

Meer sounds Canadian. I have a friend who sounds pretty much like him, and he's not white at all.

See now, this is something I've read a few times and I just don't quite get it (although that could be because I am a Canadian myself). How exactly does he sound Canadian? Not being argumentative here, I'm just genuinely curious.

You are right, but perhaps that´s his way of playing Shepard. I kind of like his "flat" lines sometimes, really soldier like!
Can´t wait to hear his performance in ME3!

See, that's why I have to lol at you.  Technology has made men mostly irrelevant; all your muscle and training and a kid could down you with one shot...

But I digress.

Men are only good for physical things right?

Reported for sexism. :P

So now I'm supposedly intimidated by 5 year olds and 105 year geezers in wheelchairs who need portable oxygen? Sorry, but if the person is intimidating then the intimidation is there regardless of rather or not they have a gun. That simply isn't the case. It's the gun that is worrying, not the person weilding it in and of themselves.

Because everyone is packing a gun at all times?

You want me to ignore reality in favor of a politically correct lie because my honest feelings on this subject steps on your feelings? That is irrational. Generally speaking women pose no physical threat to me. So why should I be intimidated by a smaller, weaker person?

Is it because my lack of worry makes a physically weaker person feel unequal for actually being physically weaker? If a woman thinks being physically weaker makes her inferior as a person that is an issue she must work out with herself. Most women accept their physical weakness and don't view it as a handicap so I don;t see what the issue is. There is a reason it is taboo for men to hit women and not the other way around. Do you perchance think that taboo is outdated? Should it be acceptable for men to fight women like they'd fight another man?

I fully 100% disagree with this.

To my experience, Hale always sounds the same and sometimes he sounds even more monotone than Meer.

I'm also bothered by the fact that Hale sometimes puts the emphasis on really weird places within the voice-lines. It might be just me, but sometimes she delivers her lines really weird. Mark Meer does this too, but less often than Hale.

I also get the feeling that Hale sounds wannabe-tough. It sounds like the really forces her voice to sound low, which sounds fake and forced. It would be cooler if Hale used her natural voice for Commander Shepard, just like Meer's Shepard-voice is also rather close to his natural voice.

Of course, this is all just my opinion, so no need to start a flame-war over this.

Edit: Also, keep in mind that Mark Meer did all the vorcha too. I think that's rather impressive if you think of it! The vorcha and manlyShep, both done by the same person! Impressive!

Guns aren't the only thing science has given us that replaces physical, male dominated jobs.  I bet a forklift could lift more than you.
Also, tasers.

No, I'm saying you'd **** your pants if a woman pulled a weapon on you.

On topic.  Again, Meer deserves no break.  When he start's acting, I'll stop hating.

That's insulting.  You've never met a soldier, then.

Impressive!!

I guess his price was low enough for Bioware to keep using him for redundant roles!

Hah, I agree with ya.:)
Everyone says there is a lot of emotion in the FemShep performance. All I hear is devoicing the last 2-3 syllables and very unreal intonation (no curves characteristic for English). I think Meer did a better job being neutral, although it does sometimes come through a bit dull (while Hale is just forced as hell). -_-

Yeah, while I think JH is a good voice actress (her Bastila was terrific), she seems miscast for this role. The way she pitches down her voice to make Shepherd sound tough comes across as too forced.

MM's performance may be a little flat now and then, but that doesn't stop it from being acting.

I have.

Martial arts are great but in many respects it sometimes gives people a false confidence. This applies to men and women. It does not make you superman/superwoman.

Twilight God may be un-PC, but he's right in that most men are physically stronger than women. Of course there are exceptions to every rule.

yeah, i have to agree, martial arts isnt going to change facts.

people who use the example of beating people in a controlled situation in friendly sparing as proof that its super effective dont really know how real fights work.

a HUGE amount of martial arts arent really even practical in a real fight. movies teach people that it makes them bruce lee, but i've personally seen champion level martial artists get their asses royally kicked by just some dude.

I like Meer better in general just because of his style of delivery. It seems natural and straightforward whereas I found Hale, while good to be kind of forced and trying too hard sometimes.

I like Meer more, but I think it has to do with the fact that I'm used to his voice.

Whenever I hear femshep speak it just doesn't quite sound right to me because I'm used to how maleshep sounds.

Not to say that Hale is in any way a bad VA, I just prefer Meer.

Whitest voice? You do know that if Wesley Snipes were born and raised in England he would have a British accent regardless of his race. He wouldn't sound Black whatever that means.  It's not race but environment that determines accent.

Mark has an interesting voice. I can play as a black Shepard and his voice will fit just fine. Sadly, can't say the same for the female shep... Mark all the way.

You are one of the few fanatics in this thread and probably the first in this thread.  The manshep fanatics for the most part say I prefer meer.  Fantics like you have to attack others and insult the other shep.

I've always liked Mark Meer's VA for ME 1 and 2. Although I didn't like Jennifer Hale's in ME2 after re-installing and doing a new playthrough of ME1 using a femshep I have a new found appreciation for her :)

But I still prefer male shep.

I would not say obviously more talented. Just look at all the roles he has played so  far, I might even argue that he has a wider range than hale!

He's a bit too monotone for my taste as Shep, but he's a fine VA.
And the only thing I'd complain about Hale is whenever she talks to Jacob she's a completely different person and I hate it ._. wtf I don't wanna flirt with him, I really don't.
Other than that I adore her voice and enjoy every second of it, just as much as Brandon Keener's.... it's sex to my ears.

Why does everyone say that?!  He sounds exactly the same in different characters.  I thought it must be funny for manShep players to hear him talking to himself, but apperantly no one noticed?

Let me ask you people this, who else does Hale voice in Mass Effect?

Also, this.

I have never said anything bad about manShep.  I'm trying to say you guys deserve better than Meer, he's a bottem tier actor.
