Personally having both played FemShep and MaleShep in both ME1 and ME2 I have to say that I felt that Jennifer did a better job in ME1, but Mark did the better job in ME2.

However people tend to forget that these things are subjective; for example someone else said that the VA for MaleHawke sucks. I completely disagree I thought he was great.

At least neither Mark nor Jennifer did as an appalling job as the VA for FemHawke. God she was BAD.

Mark meer appears to fall flat only because he consciously chooses not to give extra emphasis to parts of his speech that the player may not mean to be ephasized. He is a great voiceactor and his work as niftu cal and standing in for Mordin in the E3 demo is stellar.

Hale on the other end sounds forced all the time, I tried to make a run as Femshepard and I found myself turning the voices off....she just grated on my nerves but that's just me.

on a similar note

Bioware FFS give a bigger role to Grey DeLisle. She is AMAZING

Meer nails renegade, but his paragon is bleh.

He deserves the mocking he gets.

I like Meer more. Hale is a good voice actress but she is very overrated on the Internet, including BSN.

I didn't play FemShep character yet... and I might not do it in the foreseeable future, but Mark Meer's voice seemed very appropriate for the default male Shepard and that alone makes me say he did a great job. one thing I noticed is that he sounded way better when he was saying renegade lines, that's probably because he's got a strong voice. all in all, Meer's got the right voice for a hero and I couldn't picture anyone other than him saying Shepard's lines

I think they're both fantastic.

Although I think Meer handles renegade better, and Hale handles paragon better - but its penny pinching at best.

to me, his voice doesn't even fit Sheploo and it definitely doesn't fit my Sheps.....but eh, it's just dialogue

What's the point in hating on either one? You can have both so it's not like you can only choose one. Pathetic internet fight.

Part of the reason why Mark Meer gets ragged in some quarters is that he doesn't have a pair of ******.

Some people are going to be predisposed to preferring Jennifer Hale over Mark Meer regardless of how they deliver their lines.

Why is this thread on the ME3 board? If ever a thread belonged in "Mass Effect General Discussion" this is it.

I think Jennifer Hale is more experienced at VO and less fatigued by long-term playing of the same character.

Mark Meer, on the other hand, I read as more of a character actor who thrives on the interesting little roles, not the standard ones. He's an unusual choice because he doesn't sound like the typical gruff marine, but he sometimes fails on the emotional moments--not the big ones, the little ones (like the I Remember Me quest). Comedy he does exceptionally well--the "I'm Commander Shepard, and this is my favorite store on the Citadel" line is MUCH funnier coming from a male Shepard.

He was also freaking spectacular as Jethann. He should so voice a love interest sometime. A male hooker with a heart of gold--I am waiting for that!

So I guess the thing about Mark Meer and Jennifer Hale, looking back... they have different strengths and weaknesses. Overall, I like Hale better as Shepard, I think she was cast better, but that doesn't mean I don't like Mark Meer as an actor. Quite the contrary. They sure could've done a hell of a lot worse.

One of the reasons why I like Mark Meer's performance is that his voice acting reminds me of Staff NCOs and Mustangs I knew while I was in the Marine Corps.

But I do agree that he doesn't sound like the stereotypical action hero type Marine. That guy would sound more like Duke Nukem or Marcus Fenix.

Funny, I think the opposite. Hale conveys anger and agressiveness better, but Meer´s paragon voice has a warmth she hasn´t in ME.

I don't think that is the case at all. I would say it is more a 50/50 split. Personally I think Meer has got a lot better. I didn't like him in ME1 but in ME2 I preferred him to Hale. IMO Hale delievered things a bit over the top in terms of tone in ME2 whereas I think Meer got the tone right much more often. It's not completely down to the VA actor though, the Bioware directors are probably more responsible to make sure the tone is right.

I like Meer and Hale equally for different reasons. They are both great in their own respects - Meer has a strong sounding voice and some great deadpans, and Hale is good at having a more emotional-sounding character and has a great track record.
And Mark Meer improved a lot in Mass Effect 2, so I can only expect him to be even better in Mass Effect 3.

I've always liked Meer's voicing of Shepard. He does a great job. His voice is Shepard to me and will always be Shepard. I think Bioware made a great choice making Meer the male Shepard. Haters are always gonna hate.

P.S. Jennifer Hale also does a great job.

I know, I like both of them, what's the matter with me.

"How many do I have to lose? How many before it's enough?"

Makes me want to reach out and give Sheploo a hug.

Mark Meer does tend to sound monotonous at times. If he put forth some more emotion for Shepard in ME3 it'd be cool.

I just wonder if his romance conversations were done with the LI actors in the same room. The conversations with Miranda are awful. "Oh I'm definitely interested".

Probably not. Hale has said that everyone recorded their lines separately for ME2, I imagine Meer's recording sessions went the same way. I think there were group performances for ME1 though. I guess part of the blame could be in how the lines were written. Maybe BioWare did a better job in writing lines that fit with Mark Meer's voice.

Meer's a really cool guy. His snappy monotone gives Shep a crisp, military flavor, which is a nice contrast to Hale's slightly slower, more passionate tone. Both are incredibly versatile and fitting for Galactic Hero Number One.

And both blow a few lines here and there.

Hale: "IZZAT SUM KINDA ALIEN?!"
Meer: "IT'S OKAY. C'MERE."

Then again, after recording countless lines of dialogue, they've gotta botch it somewhere.

I think people confuse dislike with preference.  I played Femshep so much that Meer just sounded strange.  I like Meer, but I prefer Hale.  Although my preference for Hale in ME1 was maybe 80/20, my preference in ME2 was maybe 60/40.  I thought the lines in ME2 were much better suited to both rather than just Hale.
