New Dragon Age II DLC - Legacy Feedback thread

1 - Length. A game should provide 1 hour of gameplay per $ cost.
2 - The final battle really showed off the stupidity of the AI in the companions, when i was containing I pretty much gave up on them and killed off all the pillar guardians myself before reviving them.
3 - When did the grey wardens become such a-holes?
4 - Would have liked some romance-specific dialogue. Even if it was just Fenris commenting at the beginning that he's gonna make the carta pay for attacking me or something like that. Just a line or two.
5 - Very linear, I'd like to see the next DLC have a hub/home base that you set off from.
Those are kind of minor though really, I loved it and am looking forward to playing it again on my other 2 characters.

As for the story, it was also quite remarkable and uncovered several legacies. I liked frequent party members' dialogues and grim Bethany;). And somehow i think the story is just the beginning for something bigger (at least, ending cutscenes give a hint).
Overall, well done, Bioware. Keep up to great work!

I'm not sure what Luke was talking about how it would be so difficult on an endgame save on Nightmare, though. *flex*
There were little things like, "Did he really need to kick down the door?" and "That's one ugly dagger." The seals were a bit boring. The... vision was a bit... curious. Minor quibbles though. Probably the only real issue I have-- no new music. Or if there was, it was none too inspiring. Nothing distinctive to the DLC like Leliana's Song had, certainly. It's especially frustrating because DA is filled with references to music in relation to lyrium, the darkspawn, the Fade. But we never hear anything really living up to any of that. Like the drumbeat here. Nothing, just generic Deep Road/dungeon ambient. Could have been amazing.
In any case, still pretty great overall. And I eagerly await the DLC that features Hawke's beach vacation interrupted by a demon pirate armada. Also nice job on the Bronto named "Wanka."

I like the new environments. These not only looked good, but they also felt large and still had enough details.
Instead of the waves dropping from thin air the enemies came from logical positions. However, the trick to pop them up when you were looking in the other direction was still used. It also didn't make sense that enemies were still able to appear in places which you just cleared.
The clickable view points were a nice touch, because you felt something was going on and saw enemies on the move. However, the feeling that the enemies were on the move immediately disappeared when the cinematics ended. It is easy to forget that the cinematics were great, because by now we are rather spoiled by them.
I liked the new banter. However, the companions were talking about how they didn't like these Deep Roads even before they got in there.
Although I did like the voice acted parts, the story line was simply there to make you defeat a final boss. By that I mean that it didn't drew me in as a story by itself. It was more like that it was nice to know what happened to your father. The story felt like a construct. Maybe that's because the writers have to find rationalizations to make dialogue come back to the main storyline.
Like in the main game I was not connected to my family, so the scenes with your mother could have been left out. It was nice to see Bethany or Carver were available as companions.
Like the main game you saw the events unfold, rather than taking an active part in it. I still have to play it a second time to see how it changes with different decisions, but I have the feeling the differences are cosmetic again and warp back to the same story events.
In loot it was nice to see a significant amount of gold, but the armor and weapons found were disappointing. The armor was not high end and there was no reason to use it. The DA2 end game armor was still better. I didn't use any of the jewelry I found. The ones I found or bought in the main game were better.
The puzzles didn't amaze me. These were just forgettable parts to get past.
The final boss fight was too gamey and felt like the high dragons you had to slay in the main game. Again I don't like that there was no place to hide and that the boss was able to damage you while he was invulnerable. That really annoys me. It feels like grinding to survive.
Compared to some of the DA:O DLCs this one is much better. The overall feeling is that the devs gave this DLC a lot of attention. The DLC tried to improve the parts that a lot of us didn't like in the main game. It feels odd to praise that, because these shouldn't have been in the main game at all. Still, if this DLC is a glimpse of what to expect in DA3 then that game might be much better. Of course a DLC is not able to change the core gameplay mechanics, so I leave that out of it.
I think it was worth the money and I will definitely play it again.
Edit: Added a clarification to the conclusion.

Pro:
- Nice touches on the environments & elements (esp. the potions & injury kits)
- Something that isn't Kirkwall is very appreciated
- Better encounter design (much appreciated compared to DA2)
- Lack of waves except where reasonable (e.g. at the start with the Carta)
- Companion dialogue reacts (a little) to the choices that were made, which is again an improvement over DA2
- Loot with unique names, codex entries for the armour
- DLC weapon *not* overpowered compared to other weapons (though obviously beats the level curve because it lvs up)
- Genlock design (the, along with the hurlocks & ogre, look to represent a single race of things) & Hurlock alpha (the chalkspawn won me over)
-Upgrade system for the weapon is pretty good
Neutral:
- Commentary on some of the codex entries was nice, but not all of them had the commentary, and that as jarring
- Sense of scale (some areas felt bigger, but we were still restricted and there was too little content to really judge)
Con:
-Story is explained poorly : many moments there are affirmations without any context (e.g. the Hawke key or the Bianca reveal)
- Still had some random generated trash loot
-Major Stablity issues (DA2 crashed *three times* for me and that never happned with the vanilla game)
- The boss battle. Bioware seems to have mastered the art of anti-fun. Pattern bosses suck. Patterns are as annoying as waves (actually worse because you can avoid the waves by using the environment smartly)
- Also: Lorias is very *clearly* possesed by the Conductor, and not being allowed to kill him was very annoying

so done with my second run (both endgame saves on hard) and hmpf didn't find the secret, running up the whole tower again after breaking the 3rd seal wasn't right hmpf... one question regarding the secret, is it a optical one (e.g. something written on the wall) or is it a plot one, meaning you have to do certain tasks to get it?
maybe i'll find it in my 3rd run, except if it's an optical one i'm not the fan of looking at every wall for 5minutes =D
to also post some feedback after 2 postgameruns:
+ epic endfight
+ interesting story
+ 4hours long and replay value cause of changing endpart depending on choice
+ great new party interactions/dialogues (mainly varric, siblings, anders cause of the story obviously)
+ many "new" enemies (compared to da2/ "redesigned" compared to dao) and also a great variety of them (i think you had all the enemies of the man game in this dlc and they all made sense, so great job for achieving that)
+ great combats, not only the endfight but also the other bossfights and the normal fights with traps and stuff
+ beautifull environment (especially bottom of the tower), great job from your artists
- to less merrill T____T next dlc/expansions please with some merrill focus =D
so in conclusion i don't really have anything negative to say about the dlc, was a lot of fun (and as i have at least 2 more saves it will also be a lot of fun again =D) so thank you for that. was totally worth the wait and the 8€ =D

He does speak to you after a certain side quest. I don't know if this is what's being referred to.

I thought DA:O made it painfully clear that Wardens, and especially the warden order, is NOT a bunch of knights in shining armor and never was. They're a grizzled group of pragmatics above anything else, and often times that equates to them being real, hard-core A-holes. Remember that Jory didn't die from drinking darkspawn blood. He died for refusing to.

In the DLC there is not an interesting character or unexpected turn of events. It seems that the Dragon age 2 and DLC is created by different people.
Also:
'+':
- New area. And they are only used once!
- Lack of waves.
- New enemies.
'-'
- Too easy puzzles.
P.S Sorry for my English. English is not my native language
P.S.S Thank you for the Dragon Age 2!

In Dragon Age 2 was a great story. One of the best stories in games, in my opinion. I love Dragon Age 2, but I hate this DLC. His story is uninteresting, predictable and silly. Almost the same story was in many books, movies and games.

thanks man
might actually get this, positive reactions on here, and im getting bored of roaming kirkwall
one last question what is the best time to do this dlc, im thinking act 1 for the weapons and armor, or act 2/3 for obvious story reasons?

Heh I know. That was the very first lesson I ever learned in Origins, when Duncan forced me to leave my parents behind to die (Human Noble) or let my cousin be dragged to the dungeon (City Elf)

my Critique of Legacy: I give it an 8/10
See folks, this is what Bioware can do when they're not unreasonably rushed. There was more richness, depth and attention to detail in 3 hours here than there was in all of DA2.
That said, there's some good and definitely some bad to be pointed at.
Good
Level design - already been discussed ad nausium here, and the crowd is right. The areas look great. Thick with atmosphere and depth.
Encounter Design - better. logical. believable. untedius.
Companion banter- Nice. No... it was *really* nice. And I suspect Bioware just raised their own bar here, whether they like it or not. The masses will expect all future DLC to contain dozens and dozens of new lines from each companion like this one does. And when/if they don't get it, they'll see it as a black spot on the DLC.
Lore/codex entries - Friggin Great. This is what put DA:O at the top of my "all time best" list. And Legacy continues it. I couldn't ask for better.
Bad
Darkspawn. I just don't like the new darkspawn look. First it was the clown/monkey Hurlocks of DA2. And now we've got the new genlocks. They look like crap. Instead of dancing clowns/monkeys, we've now got Gorillas pouncing at you. They look exagerated...like a lot of other things in DA2. I'll say this again: I'm not 12. I'm not wowed by Big, in your face, 'Awesomeness' Enemies. Advice to Bioware: work more on the "subtle" and the "creepy" and less on the 'Big' and the "flashy".
The final battle - Stupid. Boring. Tedius. Not. fun. at. all. Not because it was difficult (it wasn't) But because it seemed specifically designed to use DA2's ******-poor controls and awful companion AI/pathfinding against you. For me, rather than meticulously trying to manually, and constantly juggle my party out of harms way, I just let them all die and I soloed all 2000+ phases of the battle on my own.... without any trouble.
Other notes (warning. spoilers...don't read on unless you've played):
-I took an act 3 save and did this DLC from it. so... why the hell is my Hawke engaging in dialogue with Mom at the end of it?
-Perhaps one of the most significant, most important Codex entries in the entire DLC is a letter from Malcolm discussing why he came there. yet... it simply shows up in your codex section at some point in the game... without any fanfare, without you "finding" it, without any comment from your sibling. nothing. It just... shows up. What the hell?
-the "key"/weapon was meh. And the process of acquiring the upgrades for it broke immersion for me. (yes folks, the 1000 year old ancient pillars really WERE labeled "pillar of speed reduction" and "pillar of critical chance". lol) At that point, I half expected the next enemy to yell out something to the effect of: "Yo, player, don't forget to save your game before fighting me!"
-Speaking of which, I did think the enemy banter during battle was a really nice touch, you guys should do more of that in the future.
And that's all. Again, I give the DLC a 8/10. I've played better DLCs...better Bioware DLCs even. But this one is quite good and utterly... totally blows away all of DA2.

Pros:
-Banter was wonderful. Companions commented on everything going on around them, which made the whole DLC feel alive.
- No more waves! Enemies appear out of logical places ( doors, corners, etc)
- No recycled environment. Everything was new and fun to explore.
- Final battle felt even more epic than the final battle of DA:2. I died 3 times before figuring out how to fight the boss, but it was still enjoyable and Varric's comments were pure gold!
- I finally felt connected to Carver and Hawke felt more human and real. (the ending scene..*sniff*)
- Sidequests were rather touching if you take certain companions with you and didn't feel like a chore.
Cons:
Nothing major, although I'd wish for a bit more interaction with the LI (Fenris, in my case) and a little more concern from them especially at a certain scene in final battle.
Maybe I was lucky, but I didn't encounter any bugs or crashes. The only thing required to activate DLC was to relog into EA account after installation. I know some people still experienced various minor bugs.
It would be nice to explore a bit more, as some passages are too linear. Addition of secret doors and more puzzles would be good too.
Overall: 9/10
Very good, very enjoyable and it really does feel like Bioware listened to most concerns and improved dramatically. I highly recommend this DLC to everyone. Definately worth the buy.
