Nope, you're dead on. It worked!
The volume's a lot lower-- I'm going to have to crank up my system volume, but the stuttering and the staggering are gone, as is the *really* annoying random popping.

Edit: I am a techie, at least from the software end. I know a bit about graphics cards and processors, and know Windows pretty much inside and out, but audio hardware, well...
Just a random note: I discovered a solution to the volume level problem that comes with disabling "Force Stereo" in Windows 7. Right click on your volume control tray icon and choose "Playback Devices." Click on your active device from the list, then select "Properties." Click on the "Enhancements" tab and enable "Loudness Equalization." DA2's volume will then be in line with, well, everything else on your system. Make sure to uncheck it, though, once you're done playing. That setting does odd things with music playback.
