Question Regarding Arcane shield and Heroic Aura

If I have Heroic Aura active on Anders (which provides a 8% defense bonus) , and he then activates Arcane Shield (Which gives 20% ) Does it give him 28 % extra defense ?

I remember someone saying that they don't go together or something, as in only one works...

Elementalist tree? Not that useful if on nightmare, but glorious otherwise with force mage spells to control groups.

Haven't played legacy yet so cannot comment.

I does not work well if you are a ****** who insists that bombing his companions to death is a great idea, think about it suicidal, not everyone here at BSN has your IQ, given time they figure it out, eventually.

Can't quite figure out what I should advance in next, the three upgrades left for my current trees aren't really usefull in my opinion...

Go for Full Elemental now or pick up utility spells like Paralyzing Prison, you can use Elemental Weapons as 1 of the 2 prerequesites.  You should have Hex of Torment and Heal.  Allow Anders to be your Creation tree mage, just go as far as the southern half of the tree with him.  Glyph of paralysis is good upgraded, dont get Repulsion.

If you decide to go elemental you have to be aware that when you upgrade Winter's Grasp it gains a very small AoE that can freeze or kill a damaged melee attacking the same target.  When you use it make sure that the target of the spell is on the farside of both you and your melee and that the melee is not using a special attack at the same time.  You can ensure this by limiting his special attacks to simply anything Brittle and make use off the CCC.

Im going to guess that your attribute points are spread between a few areas.  Focus on just magic from here on out and you will have a considerably easier time.

I'm playing at hard

Thanks for all the suggestions, still a hard decision, I do have 14 percent for almost all the element damage extra.. but healing the healer when he gets in trouble isn't such a bad Idea aswell...

And I have heard Legacy only progresses three levels( not enough to complete elemental, but is enough get Telikinetic, elemental weapons and heal/ hex of torment.... hmmm decisions...

I usually skip the fireball upgrade when I go elemental; It's useful when you have enough +%fire but I don't have enough quickslots to keep it anywhere. That's my main problem with mages.. i'm always running out of quickslots :(

Anyway, I would probably go for the heal and haste out of the creation tree. Dual haste is really handy to have and may even make the game easy enough to make you want to try nightmare ;)

So far, If I were to get the fire section, I'm getting 18 percent damage extra,

if I replace my 2 health generation + 0.25 bloodmagic (talisman of the Saarbes) for the 7% Fire damage, +22 mana, + 0.25 Bloodmagic (tevinter amulet thingy)..

I have 25 percent Fire damage, adding fire bonus skill would put me on 50 percent extra damage... seems interesting.. as it would give me the same bonus I'd get for completing the whole elemental tree.

think I'm going to base it off my next battle, see where the biggest problem lies... ( Though I know that Varric and Anders die pretty quick, so the heal might be mandatory for them... and to spent points in constitution for them should do some tricks aswell though...)

EDIT: just noticed I have another amulet doing 20 % Fire damage and 1 willpower, it does remove one of three 0.25 bloodmagic advantages I had though+ the Health generation thing that none of my other equpped Items does, gonna try it out though cause 38% extra fire Damage (that is without the upgrade of 25 %, so when I get that it's 63% O_O ) should do something I suspect :P

It does less damage then expected, but still it was a good choice, considering I had more Mana and Blood then I could fire off, Fireball has pretty quick cooldown so I can atleast attack quite much...

It will give the mage 28%.  Be aware that the upgrade to arcane shield only grants 5% to party members not the full 20%.

I was under the impression that the squad bonus from arcane shield will not stack with Heroic Aura. Is this the case (ergo both on = 8% bonus, not 13%).

They stack.

Though keep in mind that the bonuses are added to your real defense, not on top of the 5% minimum. So the actual % increase can be lower if your defense would be below 5% without the cap.

Wait, aren't the buffs simply adding the given percentage? When I last checked, a character with 70% attack would go to 90% with a 20% atk bonus. Unless they changed this in a patch, this is great for saving some stats, as your percentages will go up faster for the first few points invested and you can gain the expensive last 20-30% from buffs.

Well, yes, but the issue the post above yours deals with is when your defense is artificially inflated by the 5% defense minimum. If you have so little cunning that your defense should be 3%, then it's raised to 5% because that is the minimum defense percentile. However, if you add to your defense, you're adding to the 3%, not the 5%. In this case, 3% base + 8% from Arcane Shield is 11%, as opposed to the 8% you'd expect looking at your status screen.
