I bought Mass Effect 2 two days ago, and I just finished it after playing 30 hours. I had problems with Cerebrus network in the beginning when I first started it, so I had to disconnect from the internet to launch the game. Have done so every time I've launched Mass Effect 2 so far. So today, being all depressed, I'm looking for the DLC's for the game. But... I'm having a problem. I can't connect to Cerebrus network! As I press Login to Cerebrus Network, it brings me to the menu where I can choose to cancel or continue, and as I press continue, it's stuck at "Please Wait...". All ports are open. The game is still running, but it can't proceed any further. What is causing this?

1) Please register the game on the forums. This is not an accusation, but given the spate of users with illegally downloaded copies coming to the forums asking for help, forum registration is the only way we can be sure we are dealing with a legit copy. Illegally downloaded copies include hacked and modified files which could be either corrupt, or full of malware. Once its registered, we will be happy to help. Forums Registration here;

2) Please post a full problem report as per this thread: http://social.biowar...6/index/4795299

Done.

I'm running a digital copy of Mass Effect 2, bought through Steam.

1. As mentioned, I can't connect to Cerebrus network. It's stuck at Please Wait.

2. The problem have been around since I bought it.

3. The problem occurs when I try to connect to Cerebrus network. It also occurs "somehow" when I start the game, resulting in not being able to press anything, because it's busy connecting to Cerebrus network. I have to disable my internet to play the game.

4. I've no idea, to be honest. I have all ports open.

5. The game is not modified, not even a single DLC.

Win7 and Vista have connectivity problems due to ECN being enabled by default, while ECN isnt enabled at the EA server end.
Open up a command prompt, and type in this command.
netsh int tcp set global ecncapability=enabled

SHould fix the problem. Note that there is a secondary problem with timeouts at EA's server end which is related to their hardware. You might want to disable automatic login under Extras -> Options -> Online once you have connected the first time. Auto-login times out, manual login works fine.
If you download and install any DLC, you will need to connect to the Cerberus Network to validate the DLC with your account. You can do a manual login for this.

OK, best bet for now would be to disable the auto-login and upload gameplay feedback options under the online section I mentioned in the previous post. Should allow you to jump right in and play while we work this out.
Here is a list of the exact ports required, so you can double check your firewall to make sure comms are allowed on them.
TCP 42100
TCP Port Range 15200-15300
TCP Port Range 9945-9994
TCP 80

What Firewall/AV package are you using out of interest?

Windows defender with Security Essentials. I'll try to disable firewall.

Firewall disabled and the ECN thing you mentioned is enabled, but still no luck.

After a bit more research, it turns out 18081 is another port that needs to be enabled.
Also, are you running the game as admin and in xp compatibility mode? It could be coming up with a UAC dialogue box on the desktop which is being hidden by the game, and thats what is stopping the connection.

I've disabled the firewall and UAC, opened up all ports, and enabled that thing you mentioned through CMD, and it still refuses to connect.

Open up a command prompt, and see if you can ping any of these addresses.
239.255.255.250
159.153.235.22
159.153.109.172
159.153.161.178
159.153.105.104

Request timed out at 239.255.255.250

Can ping 159.153.235.22

Can ping 159.153.109.172

Can ping 159.153.161.178

Can ping 159.153.105.104

Can ping 159.153.202.54

Looks like I can't connect to the first one, and I suppose it's valuable?

I just grabbed those IP's from my firewall logs and didnt test. Just tried it and I cant ping the first one either, although it does get listed as an active connection when I have ME2 running and connected to Cerberus Network.

Have you used any network optimiser tweaks or programs in the past?

Edit: You could also try manually applying the 1.02 patch.

I've not modified my network connection in any way, and it's already updated to 1.02. I don't think I can apply a patch to a steam game, because it wants to update with the steam version of the patch.

Hate to admit it, but I'm fresh out of ideas on this, although it is almost 5am and I'm currently running on caffeine and adrenaline.

All I can suggest now is try out EA support. Use the live chat facility to be able to talk to a rep. It could take days for them to respond to an email.
Might also be worthwhile asking on the Steam forums as well if you havent already.

Oh man, every time I've spoken to EA before, they're always all like "Reinstall game, it fixes everything."! But I'll try. Thanks for the help tho.
