So, this is happening. The audio will stutter for about five seconds and then it'll lock up requiring a reboot. (ctrl-alt-del and such don't respond)

I didn't have this issue for most of my rogue playthrough under 270.61. When I downloaded patch 1.03 and driver 275.33 I started having crashes to desktop but that was solved by rolling back the driver. So I'm still using 270.61 now. I haven't played much since then, until now, but I did play a bit without experiencing the issue, however (from Anders' Chantry demolition to defeating the pride demon at the docks, short enough to wonder if maybe I just got lucky).

Started happening when I picked up where I left off, once while talking to Merrill in the Orsino chamber, once while leveling up after killing Orsino. After that I switched the settings down to "high," which seemed to make the problem stop, but not quite, because it happened again shortly into Legacy. (after dealing with Varric's buddy)

I can only guess it's something to do with 1.03 or my computer just doesn't like me.

Vista 64bit
Geforce 560 Ti (driver 270.61)
AMD phenom 9950 quad-core 2.6 ghz
8 gb ram

I'm considering re-updating to 275.33 but somehow I doubt that will solve the issue.

Try disabling your audio completely, and try running the game silent. See if it still happens.

Well, after I uninstalled my audio driver (Realtek HD audio something, I vaguely recall it giving me problems in the past) and let it just reinstall itself by plug-n-play or whatever, and after uninstalling my graphics drivers and installing 275.33 and playing in High settings, I was able to get to the end of Legacy from that point without encountering another crash. Yay.

Thanks for the tip about the audio, that might have been it...

It's the video drivers. The 275.33 drivers have known issues with DA2 with very high textures. The 260.71 drivers are the only stable ones for very high res. There is a giant thread pinned to the top of this forum about it. Turning down the settings to high instead of very high seems to work for the 275.33 drivers if you need them for another game (like TW2). This is an issue on Nvidia's end, not BW.

As I said, the issue occurred using drivers 270.61 on both "Very High" and "High."

However, it appears now to be an issue unrelated to DA2 in a different way.
