 Mmkay so people have custom portraits of their video game characters as they're avatars.
I'm wondering how I do this?

As in, I have a custom Commander Shepard and I'd like that as my avi.

From reading around it looks like it's a bit of a time consuming process that frankly sounds more difficult than it is worth:

I frankly don't get why they are so against it as every other site I go to from the UFC boards to Sherdog to GameStop and IGN have custom avatars/icons and never have issues with people posting anything inappropriate.

That's for Dragon Age, and with Dragon Age. I have it but... I don't want that with my avatar, and I might go to the trouble of doing it but they might just take them all down eventually. =\\
I wonder if it works with mass effect...

From what I saw in those threads you don't have to use a Dragon Age avatar then.  You can use whatever you want.

So I've tried the solution(s) you posted, but the Character Creator just keeps saying "Unable to access your online profile storage. The account information provided may be invalid."

It seems like other users used to have this problem, too. Is there any solution for this? I see people changing their avatars pretty often, so the issue doesn't fully seem to be on the server's side.
