I haven't seen this discussed anywhere unless I failed a spot check. In which case, sorry.

Early in Legacy, Hawke can stumble onto a few codex entries that make reference to the Pestilent One. Now, this stuck out to me because there's a codex entry in DAO about the elven gods of evil, or the Forgotten Ones. They are referred to as Geldauran, Daern'thal, and Anaris: the gods of terror and malice, spite, and pestilence. It's the last one that intrigues me. (Source: DA Wiki)

See, Merrill goes out of her way to talk about the Dread Wolf's betrayal of the elven gods. I figure it has to mean something. And the way the dwarves refer to this Pestilent One, it almost makes it sound like he possessed a power similar to what we see of the lyrium idol. And it seems they bound in him rock and lyrium. So my current theory is that the idol is the sealed presence of Anaris, the elven god of pestilence.

It may even relate back to the darkspawn. The blight is a corruption, a form of pestilence, after all. And if the Pestilent One is the real source of the taint and he's bound in lyrium, than it might explain why the darkspawn and Wardens here the Archdemons "sing." (Remember that Justice hears lyrium "sing" in DAA.)

This is all conjecture, but I'm curious to know others' thoughts on this as well.
