Edit: Another example is Arrival.

Arrival was as big a mess as Horizon. Bringing that up won't help you here.

You misunderstand me. I did not enumerate Horizon, Tali Recruitment and Arrival as examples of the excellence of BioWare's plot writing.

What I wanted to illustrate is that recounciliating space combat and protagonist face time in a Sci-Fi setting is *HARD*. It's precisely because it's hard that it's clumsily done. But it still *CAN* be done.

Personally I'd rather they do it clumsily than not do it at all. Since you cannot give up face time in a video game, the only alternative is to forgo space combat, and all action RPGs will be reduced to the hero crawling in dungeons killing monsters - no space combat, no problem. But that is setting the bar too low - too low for me, too low for BioWare, and I'm sure too low for you as well.

If there are better alternative plot techniques to solve this problem, then I'd be really glad to hear it. It'd be much more helpful to think *constructively* sometimes. Criticism alone does not lead to improvement.

As an example of BioWare doing a *good* job reconciliating space combat with protagonist face time/personal combat, I'd list the final battle in Mass Effect 1 as an example. It was beautifully done.

But that is reminiscent of how Revan confronts Malak when the Republic Fleet destroys the Star Forge/gets destroyed.

Which in turn is reminiscent of how Luke confronts Vader & the Emperor on Death Star II when the Rebel Fleet destroys the Death Star II/gets destroyed.

But there are precious few ways to achieve this, and you can only repeat yourself so many times.

Well I won't say that: "We can't save Earth, and we can't be the Reapers." But something did occur to me today when I was watching a YouTube Vid of gamermd83 - She said something about Omni Tools and how all the races can understand one another because of them. And it got me thinking...

Wouldn't it be cool if BioWare decided to have the Reapers create a "Babel Virus" that affects the omni-tool, disabling the language translantion tech. And all of a sudden, out of no where; while your playing Mass Effect 3. You can no longer understand what Garrus, Tali, Liara and some others are saying. For the first time, you hear their voices in their native tongue. And Shepard and Co. will have to figure out how to communicate with one another. And find a way to fix the omni-tools.

This could be really cool, Posted Image and it makes sense for the Reapers to do something like this.. Posted Image

Such a dumb idea. I hated it when the devs first added that to the lore way back with the release of Bring Down the Sky. It still makes no sense. They'd have been better off just leaving the language thing alone.

Sometimes for fiction to work you have to grant it a little leeway.

I think that is a brilliant idea and I wish I'd have been the one to think of it. That's some creative thinking there. I'll definitely be borrowing this tactic when I write up my "How humanity could seize the galaxy" piece...

It would certainly be neat if the Reapers did do that in ME3, though of-course it would get old fast if it affected the player much.

Of course we can and we will defeat the reapers....they exist because Shepard allows it and they will end because Shepard demands it.

Yeah? Well you're not even an automaton, not really. You're just an organism, and organisms can be killed!

Shepard can't....s/he never really died at all just decided to take a little time out and nap a little bit between ME1 and ME2 that's all...s/he would have woken up and proceeded to kick some serious reaper ass without any intervention from Cerberus.

I gotta disagree with you there. Shepard was indeed dead. Cerberus brought him/her back. But I do agree with you that we asbolutely will defeat the Reapers. Unless we seriously screw up.

Shepard never died! Shepard is so incredibly badass that he survived suffocation and re-entry! The whole resurrection thing was to make the Reapers feel better. >.>
