Don't know if I trust the truth on this Grey Warden Prison.  When you
get in the Deep Roads, it definately looks like an old Thaig.  The codex
says that the grey wardens shaped some of the deep roads with magic.
Also didn't it look like a circle tower in the prison/thaig?  Knowing
the Tevinter history with Thaigs from Witch Hunt, I believe that this
Thaig was taken over by the Tevinters who built a Circle in it.  The
wardens come later and convert it into a prison hence the trapped demons
in cells.  Also the way Cory acted as he knew the Dumat alter was there
and even asked for the priests to come to him immediately when he
thought you belonged to the Imperium.  Why would the wardens build an
altar to Dumat?  It had to be there before.

Well with the Carta stuff and we learning about the warrior castle, doesn't it confirm that it was first a Dwarf prison for Cory, but then the Grey Wardens made it more magical?

The codex said the original construction method has been lost to history and it was constructed 2000 years ago. I think it was a dwarf Thaig and not a dwarf prison as the amgeforn mentioned that the warrior caste from each generation would be selected to guard in exile beneath the sun to keep Malvernis at bay who was trapped in an Orb and brought to the surface to keep it form the stone(deep roads). I believe this Grey Warden Prison was the last Thaig to be attacked by the Malvernis hence the green slime everywhere. Maybe the Malvernis is what caused the darkspawn taint/blight.

You battle Profane in one of the sidequests. Maybe it means nothing, but it could be the connection to the ancient dwarves who may have built the "prison" to begin with.

We who are forgotten, remember,
We clawed at rock until our fingers bleed,
We cried out for justice, but were unheard,
Our children wept in hunger,
And so we feasted upon the gods,
Here we wait, in aeons of silence.
We Few, we profane.

Codex on Profane. Forgotten dwarfs? Feasting on the gods? Waiting in Aeons of silence.

Hmmmmm...

The reference to Cory and the stone makes me think back to the nexus Golem saying the stone lives under Orlais. Seems to obvious to ignore. The dwarf builders also could have been Wardens, dwarves are the best builders, meaning they built over something else. Like in the end the giant dome has dwarven statues on it. It seems like it was Dwarven, Tevinter, then Warden contruction, than Carta construction.

I have to agree where everyone is going with this, especially since Malvernis is imprisoned outside in the arena like structure. I still believe that it was a Thaig first that was destroyed by Malvernis before his capture in the orb because of the green mist and slime in the deep roads section of the prison. This was mentioned in the amgeforn of the foul. (the slime part).

So possibly:

Dwarf Thaig -- Tevinter Temple to Dumat (w/ mage circle) --- Warden Prison

..Well, Cory first assumed Hawke and the others as a servant for the dwarves, so I guess it's possible..

That caught my attention too. If humans were considered a third-class citizen in his era that he considered Hawke to be a slave, does that mean Corypheus was actually an elf? I don't think they would have accepted an slave race to be an acolyte in such an important temple.

This all reminds me of Arlathan being 'an ancient empire that span across all Thedas'...

Just my opinion. Might be completely wrong.

I think that was about the Tevinter Imperium, their empire was built on the backs of slaves. He didn't mean all humans are slaves, but that Hawke and company clearly were not acolytes of Dumat or Tevinter Magisters, so that would make them likely slaves in his eyes. If Corypheus truly is one of the magisters who entered the golden/black city, then by that time Tevinter had already made slaves of the elves and much of the rest of Thedas.
