It was very challenging, much easier on casual though. My party wiped so many times on normal and I went through mythals favour like chocolate, didn't wipe once on casual though. Played through this first time from and end game, not sure I would want to play it in one of the early acts....

Was challenging. I didn't realise for ages that the fire does little damage near the statues, so I spent ages running away from it, unable to fight shades, and having party members get stuck before dying.

Having said that, when I told companions to hold position at the statues whilst Hawke went round shutting them off, the companions invariably left the statues to get burned. Silly.

But very good boss battle. I liked how challenging enemies were in the DLC.

The battle was interesting. Certainly better than the simple tank-hit-hit-spell-spell-potion battles that were in the main game.

The trick was just selecting all your party members and moving them together. I didn't even have to use the Hold order. They were smart enough to stay where they were and ignore the shades. :)

I thought it was a fun and challenging boss battle, unlike most DA2 bosses this one made you work for the victory.

I really think it comes down to difficulty, us playing on the harder difficulty have had to learn and use the tactics employed to fight this battle since the arw. If you move too far away from your party on hold they will follow you, if you have a party members behavior set wrong they will flee into the opening when hit with the fire aoe (which you've by now learned it's best to stay at the pillars), you've got to controll individual party members when they follow the wrong enemies or decide to run through the electricity or get stuck in the maze.

Sorry to say it, but this was a l2p moment. Not to mention it has already been said that enemies fought off the beaten path of the main story line are going to be much harder than the main bosses. So yeah, the real final boss of DA2.

To be fair, if you were in this DLC for story reasons then you really got it here. It only makes since that one of the magisters of old would be this tough.

Ctrl + A is your friend. Move party together from point to point.

I thought the final boss fight was excellent, except for the fact that I ran into some sort of glitch. He won't die. I get him down to 1 hp, keep whaling on him until the end of time but he won't go down. So thus far I still haven't finished the DLC. I'm playing PS3 version on Hard difficulty, btw.

Love it, and beat it on Hard twice (rogue and a mage).

Crtl-A to select all, make sure they hold positions rather than running after the guardians. Run around and occasionally turn around to kill the guardians. Only gets bothersome how pathfinding sometimes messes up and Aveline will walk back into the flames.

Much more than than merediths battle though.

I'd have to join the calls of people saying this is a good boss fight that demands more than simply wailing away on a boss until they die. In my opinion, this is the kind of varied encounter/boss design that MMOs have brought to single player RPGs that really benefit the genre.

However, there is one particular section where the pathing loves to do something stupid and not head between the rocks as you want them to. Apart from that, I had no real difficulties playing this on normal, and I don't play an "optimal"/min-maxed party. The first time Aveline died for no reason I could determine after the rocks popped up, and the second time I was unlucky enough to run to the alcove where he started his flame jets and got two of my party members roasted. Whoops. He went down on the third attempt. The fight took a while to complete, but it was fairly logical to figure out what you had to do.

In this way, I'd actually say it was better designed than some of the other optional boss fights in DA2 like the desire demon or High Dragon. You actually got a good indication of how to tackle the fight without having to resort to trial and error, which for my money is the hallmark of a good boss encounter.  I'd potentially contend that the ice & lightning damage in the final run-around segment are a little random for my liking, but at least on normal difficulty they didn't deal you an exorbitant amount of damage. That phase might be slightly more frustrating on the higher difficulty levels if they're dealing more damage.

I though the fight was great, far better than anything in DA2, infact the whole DLC is better than DA2 main game.

Only thing i would have liked is to be bale to zoom out the camera a bit further for easier positioning.

I lost everyone save Bethany in the first wave of fire because they were too stupid to run from the massive wall of flame. Still managed to finish the fight just with her on normal

The strategy remains the same for all difficulties, however it seems on hard/nightmare it's a lot more tedious especially in the final section with the falling ice and lightning barriers. Might be a good idea to bring some lightning warding runes next time time I try this :P.

I thought it was hard at first, but it's actually really easy. You're NOT supposed to be running all over the place.

I found it to be a very simple fight. Granted I played on casual, however my entire party except me and my dog were crispified on the first flame session. I continued going to one pillar at a time and eventually beat the boss with my archer rogue...thus telling me that simply paying attention and knowing your class can get you a really long way...

Anyone actually uses runes? I use runes.. it wasn't that bad and it was heck of a fight, I always play on normal tho. Love it.. I had to use my head and not just head there, send carver to taunt and hit until is dead.

Now if I only knew where the blasted helm is.. arg gonna do a run with my rogue she is level 16.

The helm is in the color puzzle level. You need to shut down all four color barriers (yellow, red, blue and green) to get to it.

I beat it on my first try on Normal - after everyone in my party died several times and I resurrected them with Mythal's Favor grenades, I figured out that if everytime you had to go destroy the thingies, you set your party members to Defensive, and everytime he comes to attack you, you set them to Aggressive, it works out pretty well. Once I did that, it was relatively easy, just a little annoying to keep pausing it and switching up tactics so much.

I wasn't expecting a fight like that soo at the first phase... I lost 3 of my companions to the flames because they wanted to stay back and range attack the shades >_> Soo flames got them and my Hawke and his trusted Mabari had to fight the rest of the battle themselves...

On the other hand, it felt much more epic when I was 1-on-1 with Corpyheus...I felt the epicness that I felt when I fought with Loghain in Origins or The Arishok in the Act 2.

In the end, it was a really challenging fight but with some effort ( and potions...Second Winds, Devours .. ) I was able to beat him.... Hawke vs Creepy Tainted Magistrate. Although it would be more epic if Bethany would avoid the flames too. Blood of Hawke against the enemy ! :D

I was playing on Casual and at first I was getting frustrated at how difficult it was. Then I figured out the mistake I was making and handled each pillar one at a time instead of trying to go for all of them at once.

This.  I got ninja'd the first time and lost everyone and was frantically running around in circles.  Once I figured out to hide in the corners for minimal damage it was fine.

Press Ctrl + A and you controll your whole group at once. Then move inbetween intervals. I played it this way with my Rogue on Hard, wasn't hard at all.

I did lose my only mage (Bethany) after the second instance to the spinning fires as she was trapped between rocks, but the rest of the battle worked out fine with potions.

This is the way too do it.  Be sure to kill the 2 shades when they spawn as that is what will keep the rest of the group from moving with you.  Besides you get healed every time you kill one.  Also if you move all the way up the stairs when the fire comes you don't seem to get burned as badly as you do if in the middle.

I really liked this battle, but then I like puzzles and in a way this battle is a puzzle you have to solve (and be really quick about it).

When I first played it on the x-box (I am really more of a pc player) I found it very difficult. My whole group kept dying, because I always tried to outrun the fire and my companions always got stuck fighting the Pillar Guardians (even when I had selected them all).

Only when I decided to take down the Guardians as quickly as possible (my Hawke is a Rogue) and then move on to the next statue, it finally worked out and when I used the same method with my pc Hawke (a spirit healer), I managed it on the first try.

I play on normal.

I thought it was great fun, especially when I compare it to fights like agianst the Arishok.

Did 2 playthroughs of it last night as had to go back on a save and claim some stuff I'd missed. Team was Mage Hawke, Sebastian, Varric and Aveline.

1st Playthrough, Mage Hawke got KOed just after the rock formation appeared because I foolishly tried running through solo and got double teamed by Cory, some Shades and the flames before I could pop a potion.

2nd Playthrough EVERYONE but Aveline died by time got to the electric addition to the battle.

First to go was Hawke (again) pretty much akin to how died first time around although this time it was due to me not paying attention whilst I was trying to free Varric from a fate I resigned to him dying next with because for some reason he'd got stuck on that central platform where Cory hovers when doing the immolation sequence.

That left me with Aveline and Sebastian and I kept getting mixed up as ot where the next node was I was to smash and in the crazy AI running, Sebastian got caught in it all as was trying to guide Aveline to the node. Beating Cory with Aveline was a slow process but I worked my way through him.

Despite all that I loved the battle and look forward to taking more of my Hawkes through Legacy.

I personally did enjoy this boss fight, as many others
said, I liked the fact that it was different from the norm for RPG (and defiantly
Dragon Age boss fights.)

However, I experienced similar frustration over the hazards with my stupid
party. I went in with Bethany, Merril and Isabella. All three of them died in
very similar fashions by getting stuck on the rock formations and then by the
time I realize that they are not fighting the shades, the fire decimates them.
So I ended up beating the boss as a solo tank Hawke from the point of about 50%
of the boss's health.

Overall I liked the fight itself, but it was very frustrating that all my party
members died in such careless fashions, and I lacked any methods of reviving
them (which in truth is my fault). Very good DLC though Bioware!

Actual dialogue reflecting the gravity of the situation made the boss battle even better for me. Not to mention I lol'd heartily at that comment.

The dialogue was great during the fight. Nearly died due to laughing so hard.

Isabela: "Quick, Strip him down!"

Hawke: "Is this really the time for that Isabela?"

Isabela: "That's not what I meant..."
