I did enjoy the final boss. :) Luckily I had excellent fire ratings on my Hawke and squaddies but the cold and electricity. Ouch! I played on normal and died a couple of times.

I've not had as many problems with the final boss fight.... I've done it on mage and dual wield rogue
I'm doing a warrior run through now....which I'm expecting more difficulty.

The tips i've got for the final boss fight are...

Make sure all your characters have FIRE RESISTANCE waaaaay up high...

Don't activate the statues untill all your party are in the enclove ...enclove dosn't off total immunity, but it is better than no protection at all..

Always wait untill the flames are ahead of you before running for the next statue, not immediately behind..

It's seriously -not- that hard.

I just spammed mark of death and brand at the bad guy.... then hit him with some heavy hits.... he still goes the three rounds... though regardless...

I'm seriously convinced rouge is just a walk through.

My one tip for the fight is to select all your party and move them together when the flames are shooting. Don't trust the AI to have them following you in a timely manner. You can keep them all selected when activating the statues, they should be easilly able to take out the guardians fast with just auto attacks.

Only let them do their own thing when fighting the boss directly.

Finished it on second try on nightmare with weapon and shield warrior, no casualties, 100% elemental resistance didn't seem to help much,, best to avoid the flame.

Fun battle, bit different.

Wow, I loved the final boss battle.  I thought it was well-tuned, challenging and interesting, probably my favorite fight in Dragon Age, right up there with Broodmother and the Black Marsh dragon.  I hope we'll see many many more battles just like it.

I went through on hard difficulty with my 2h warrior, Fenris, Bethany and Varric.  Got pwned the first time through by the fire, but second time, put mah gameface on and barreled through.

Don't stand in the fire.

Don't let the AI tell your party where to go.  Keep them all selected when you move and keep them on a very short leash. Think ahead, when you get those portal shades down and it's time to move to the next portal, don't wait around.  Look for the fire spout, and run.  Auto-attacks can bring down the portal shades fairly easily, save your special attacks for the boss.

The biggest problem is if the AI starts to improvise (particularly in the rock maze phase).

It's difficult, still trying on nightmare.

What made me ragequit after 5 or so tries isn't the boss itself though, it's the incredibly stupid AI, I give them an order (one by one!) to move in a simple short straight line... AND WHAT DO THEY DO??!! They just make a freaking huge turn left, get stuck behind the rock barricade and die in a fire, it's like the devs programmed them to make that mistake.
It's easy for a human (though I imagine most groups in for example an MMO would be equally or more stupid) but not for the damn bots.

And whoever said they can tank the flames on nightmare almost certainly cheated, even my Aveline, who has insane magic resist and defence (and normally takes like 0 damage even while tanking huge groups and magic mobs) dies almost instantly from the fire.

I'm just gonna leave my companions to die in a group on the third phase and kite the mobs on my main, it'll probably work better then trying to deal with the AI.

I enjoyed the final boss battle. It was tough, and I had to revive a couple of party members a couple of times but I quickly got the hang of it. Only playing on normal though.

I was glad of the challenge, as it could have just been a boss with a ton of hit points that took a long time to whittle down.

I did rather well on normal, won in the ifrst try, with three still standing. Mid act 2.

Party lineup.
Bethany: elemental almsot full + spirit healer (runscript addtalent 308000)
Hawke: rogue, not assassin, because I loaded a save before I found out that I was placing points in the wrong spec (no more Maker's Sighs either)
Varric: the usuaL.
Merrill: Rock armor and regular nuking.

I disagree with the OP. After the second try, I realized what I had to do and stomped a mudhole in him. This was easily one of the better final boss fights in any Dragon Age game and certainly more fun than Meredith or Orsino. Only the Ancient Rock Wraith comes close (although I hated that bastard).

Enjoyed the Legacy DLC as a decent add-on quest to DA2. Play was similar to some other quests and difficulty on par with final battle in Forbidden Knowledge, if of different character. I was kind of disappointed in the gear drops though, since I played from a concluded DA2 hybrid Mage and had better gear already than dropped during the quest (Final Thought staff is better than the Key, on balance). If you can survive it playing from an earlier point, say act 2, then the gear drops would be great.

Did it on normal, absolutely loved it, nice and challenging without being crazy (like the last boss in Amgarrak for example :)
Took a while to kill the adds while running around while staying ahead of the fire with 3 melees in the group, but all in all it was a great end fight.

I did one play through with my lvl 13 warrior (he was 15 by time I got to the boss). My party got slaughtered pretty fast before I figured out what the hell I had to do. Than I just solo the rest of the battle. Took my time, but it was a cake walk after that, just takeing the time to do the damage and getting clear in time to start takeing out the 4 points again for the next stage.

I'm now doing it again with a low level (completly restarted) Mage cause I wanted to go back and do it with one of my siblings. I'll do anouther playthrough with a rouge probly so I can have my sister there next.

Well finally did it. Not by solo kiting but by pausing almost thrice a second :D

The final battle has a nice idea about it.

I'd argue that the "maze" phase is badly designed 'cause developers must have been aware how crappy the pathfinding code is...

I just beat it on Nightmare, and while I did have some minor annoyances when my companions occasionally went the wrong way when I was moving them around the earth mazes, overall I enjoyed the encounter.

Completed it last night on hard with a caster, that was a nasty fight but interesting. I was not ready for that fight, lost my whole crew, I was the only one standing lol at the end. First fight that was truely hard, loved it, not sure I am ready for nightmare though. Nice job bioware, nice job indeed.

The boss fight was a pain, but in a way I enjoy. The AI didn't fail me at all, if one of them died it was pretty much my fault. Took me a couple of tries, but it was fun. :P

Has anyone tried hiding BEHIND the wall corners were the demons spawn?? I tried it several times and I noticed I never took damage when I had my party flagged behind the wall corners. I'm not sure if that was intended or I'm encountering a glitch of sorts...

I tried getting as close to the corner of the fence as I could and I would still take some damage, my melee fighters seemed to be right around there and they got hit, but I'll give it a try later. I thought the fight was fine. I died twice on Hard. The first time, I had no idea that he was about to shoot flames and they just shot out and roasted my whole party. The second time, I tried to get to the statue, thinking the fire would stop when I turned off one. After I saw that wasn't the case, I figured it was all four and I just simply followed the fires pattern and I made it easily. I lose Aveline once, she got stuck on the rocks I think, but other than that, simple pattern and the AI stayed right with me. It was fun.

I may try it later but I just HATE HATE HATE this battle!

Just so many things:

1. as mentioned, when you tell your party to hold somewhere relatively safe and THEY STILL RUN INTO THE FLAMES!!! G**D*****T do what I am telling you to do.

2. it's almost impossible to damage him as a solo melee if your other characters die

3. Can't res (I don't know what those potions are and I'm trapped in that area anyway so I can't go out and buy anything) due to the climatic events of DA2 since my only spirit healer was Anders

4. Those flames do WAAAAY too much damage! The first one I lost was Aveline- she NEVER dies on me! NEVER! She went toe to toe with the final Pride demon (the optional one) and her health bar barely moved.

Games are supposed to be fun and this wasn't fun. It's one thing to be a challenge and I have felt accomplishment in beating such things but in this case with my party members just doing stupid things, among other stuff, it felt cheap.

I didn't ask you to fix it since it didn't need fixing. The battle stinks because the control refuse to do what they are supposed to do. Do not put words in my mouth or condescend to me.

Don't tell your party to hold, they wont let you get too far from them, so your just going to move them into the flames. Also there really is no safe zone. You don't have to do anything special, when the flames pass by a gap, just run directly behind them, your party will follow you, all I would recommend is you don't let your party engage the Shades, in front of the pillar, move up the stairs and to the sides. Yeah the flames are strong, but they should definitely never hit you head on, their easy to avoid.
