 Hi all,

I'm getting a "Rendering thread exception: General protection fault" error in ME1, 1.02 when in conversations.

Image IPB

I'm running with no pagefile, so I'm unsure if that has bearing. Otherwise, I'm on Win7 x64, 12GB of RAM (hence no pagefile) and otherwise my drivers are fairly up to date. I can get the info out of the launcher if it'll help.

Is there some generic guidance on this bug? Seems to be known about, just not solutions posted other than "beat head on wall. repeat until bloody"...

Report: www.rampantandroid.com/images/me.xml

nVidia driver: 270.61
Creative X-Fi driver: 2.18.0015
DX9 installed, DX11 present with Windows 7
Windows 7, no SP1.

Thanks.

Solution:
I enabled pagefile
Disabled XRAM
Upgraded to Win7 SP1
Reinstalled DX9.0c

Thanks to those who helped, no thanks to the people who posted useless crap.

1.  It’s important to identify which product is experiencing the problem.

  a.   Is it the console version or the PC version?  (Edit: Most of this is strictly applicable to the PC version.) PC

  b. Media: physical disk or digital download (and which vendor) Origin download

2.  System Details

  a. Processor / Core count / Core Speed / Main RAM Amount             Core i7 950, 4 cores, with hyperthreading turned on, 3.5Ghz, 12GB RAM

  b. Display Adapter / VRAM / Driver Version (just saying "latest drivers" doesn't help -- Edited: only ATI / nVIDIAcards are supported)         GTX580, 1.5GB VRAM, 270.61 Drivers

  c. Sound Adapter / Driver Version Creative X-Fi 2.18.0015

  d. Operating System (& service pack if applicable) Windows 7 x64 no service pack (set it to install SP1 as I left.)

  e. Direct X Version Whatever DLLs come with Windows 7. Which may mean I'm missing some DX9 DLLs? If so though, why did the Origin installer include no DirectX redist package to install?

3.  Problem Details

  a.  When it comes to problem details, think about the five basic questions: Who? What? When? Where?  Why? Okay, so “Who?” doesn’t really apply here, but the others do. Conversations. Always in conversations. And random. Sometimes after 3 hours of playing, sometimes after 10 minutes.

  b.  What?  What is the nature of the problem that you’re seeing? See screenshot of error window.

  c.  When?  When does the problem occur? Every time you engage in a particular action or only after so many hours of play? See above

  d.  Where? Where does the problem occur? Is the problem localized to a particular planet or does it occur everywhere? Everywhere, it seems

  e.  Why? As much as possible, can you isolate the problem to a specific set of steps? Get into a conversation...and it  happens. Sometimes. Happened twice on the normandy. A few times on the Citadel.

Use these guidelines to report your problem: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/131/index/2012975

This problem is GPU related. Either your video drivers are too old, too new or you need a Directx 9 installation.

i had this problem way back in the day. for the longest time me 1 was unplayable because of it. Eventually my video card came out with a driver update that fixed it. if you're up to date with drivers you shouldn't have any problems i would think.

My driver is from april. No, I doubt that is no the problem. Moreover, if I upgrade to the latest nVidia driver, Dragon Age 2 has problems. The DX runtime installer says I'm 100% good...

Moreover, all that info IS present given I have my system in my signature.

We know that there is far more to what goes into a problem report than just a list of components, but this member knows so much more than anyone else does, that he doesn't feel any need to learn anything new.

Most likely, nVIDIA has broken the game again, as they have done before.  But he won't accept that, so we have to refer him to EA.

Excuse me, but you wanted system specs? In my sig. You wanted DX version? I've told you. Vanilla Win7 install, no service pack, I did not run DXInfo mind you. I've given you my driver version numbers, and I gave you the XML dump from the launcher.

But fine, if you want forms filled out:

As I left for work today, I set it to install SP1, and I also dug up a DX9 installer from one of my other games after the web installer claimed I was up to date; I forcibly installed DX9, something the origin installer did NOT do.

Well, worth noting that Unreal Engine 3 seems to hate XRAM, so I'll try disabling that tonight.

Did you download and install the 1.02 patch? Links available at teh top of the forum.
Origin -may- have included DX9 ruutimes, but it may act like Steam, and occasionally fail to install it properly when it detects a version of DX that is newer. Try downloading and installnig DX9.0c from Microsofts website.

I don't remember the DX installer UI though, and while the ME1 installer is no longer on my PC, I don't see any DX installer packages. I'll kill XRAM and play with SP1/DX9 installed and see if I get an issue.

Thanks.

It looks like some combination of having a pagefile, forcibly installing DX9 and disabling my X-Fi's XRAM was enough to fix the problem - but only time will tell, I guess. Thanks to those who helped...

And no thanks to the people who didn't.
