Anyone else think Dragon Age 2's art style is too bland?

My opinion of DA2 is lukewarm at best, but I thought the art style was beautiful and distinctive. I greatly prefer Origins overall, but it had a tendency to look a bit monotone and bleak in certain areas; the Brecilian Forest stands out as being particularly bland and pea-soupy. I noticed that BioWare seemed to be correcting this in Awakening and they moved even further in DA2.

(Just referring to style here, BTW; in terms of environmental variety, Origins wins hands-down.)

It's extremely generic. DAO had a somewhat generic fantasy setting, but DA2 just has a....generic setting. There's nothing outstanding, nor damming.

No. you're clearly looking at Origins, one of the blandest looking games in the history of generic blandness, everyone but you apparantly understood that, that's why bioware improved the entire visuals to sumth'n good & unique

Not sumth'n that looked like a badly touched up last gen game like origins, i could write a book bout how awful origins looked, DA2 is such a massive improvement i can only assume anyone that thinks it looks bad had their eyeballs removed in elective surgary and replaced with hotdogs

S**tty Comment is S**tty.

LMAO. Dude looking at this thread's posts I can safely say that your definition of "everyone but you" is really hilarious. Posted Image

I believe the new art style and less box-like environments are not mutually exclusive. I like the new art style a lot, looks a lot less generic and gives the world a lot of personality. But at the same time, houses that look like clean boxes don't do a lot to pull me in.

There's a certain merit behind the thinking "keep the player's eyes where the player should be looking", but the thing is, why shouldn't we be looking at our surroundings?

As for races, I like all the revamps. Now all the races look more distinct and not just "tall and slightly bulkier human" and "short human with slightly pointy ears". Definitely an improvement! Not so sure about all the darkspawn designs though... don't really mind either of them I think, but it's not like I find either hurlock to be particularly interesting looking either.

I can honestly say that - with the exception of the redesigns (elves, qunari, darkspawn) - I don't actually see much difference in the art style between Origins and DA2. The environments looks more-or-less the same to me stylistically, maybe with a better colour palette in DA2 but that's really it. I think the lack of unique areas in DA2 had a lot to do with this impression, though. If they were using a new style they should have showcased it more. As it was I didn't even notice it was there.

Why don't they just skip to Dragon Age 3 already?! Start anew!

I ... um ... what?  Is this some joke troll post?  I can only assume that you have never played DA:O, or you are delusional and I feel sorry for you.

Honestly I'm sure that LEGO DRAGON AGE 2 would have more interesting locations than DA2 did, and at least it would give a good excuse for the bodies flying apart when you touch them.

We should make a poll.

Dragon Age 3 Kirkwall Tan
Dragon Age 3 Deep Roads Brown
Dragon Age 3 Blood Red
Dragon Age 3 Over The Rainbow

Yes? I vote rainbow. But I might be slightly biased.

/Tan
/Brown
/Red

one thing I'm glad for in the new art style is that I don't have to see people talking with big mouths.

Seriously. Iona is good looking when she's not talking, but as soon as she opens her mouth it just becomes huge sometimes. Bigger than it looks when it's closed.. Then there's the woman in Dust Town. Zerlinda I think. Her mouth was not natural.

And at least I don't have to see gigantic hands anymore Posted Image.

Though for some characters that got traded for cryptkeeper hands Posted Image

^ Yeah, better hands are needed. And the more I actually look at the DA2 human-faces, the less I like them, they all seem to have as, erynnar pointed out in another thread, Jay Leno-chins, non-existant lips and that weird bloated look about the face.

About the art-style itself, I don't know about bland... I'd just say its fugly. Somehow, every time I see DA2 I'm reminded of '80s cartoons.. And this is not a good thing.

Everyone looks the same in the DA2 art style. I mean, compare Arl Howe to Teryn Loghain, there's massive differences in the faces there. But then compare say, Fenarel to Tomwise in DA2.

I heartily agree about the donkey ears (hate them), but those two don't look similar to me. Fenarel I like, Tomwise is, actually, acceptable compared to the horrors that have become most city elves. What makes them look slightly related is the mouth. All male elves have the exact same mouth.

This said, DA2 human women indeed look the same, with some notable exceptions. They go by categories: thug gal face, noble lady etc... They all have that square face healthy look. Men not that much, because facial hair allows for more variety (and men aren't usually as bound by  the same standard of "plastic beauty" as women, so more freedom, probably).

Overall, DA2 human faces are too smooth? soft? chubby? PC included. I like the sharper DAO look much more. It had... personnality, for lack of a better word.

yea.... DAO had some elves have their ears jut out to the side (sort of) and were huge. Saying DA2 was the first to do this in the series is just foolish.

I for one like the new look in its entirety.

Uh... I don't know about you... but I got the impression that those enormous ears were one of the reasons that Soris compared her to "a dying mouse".

But that said, I agree in liking the new look, EXCEPT... I wish they would tone it down a little, and work more on rendering the faces. Too many reminded me of insects or... well, mice. The elves that I thought looked good and distinct were Tomwise, Fenris, Orsino. Merill a little bit, but even she kind of looked like a bug. A cute one, but still.

The real problem with DA2 is there's no lack of coherence. Things don't look like they belong in the same world. Just compare the guard & templar armour with the champion's armour.

Which is great because wasn't one of the reasons given for the art shift that they wanted a more "unified art style"?

I guess they took the "WoW" route. Millions play it, so they must like the childish/cartoonish approach.

That said, I liked the DA:O style - and would suit any future games far better

That is a complete ridiculous assertion, as I play WoW to raid with my guild. I would think I'd notice if DA2 had suddenly taken the WoW route. *snort* In no way, shape or form does DA2 artwork resemble Blizzard's artwork - looking at the human anatomy alone, it's clear that DA2 hews to the more realistic side of things in terms of both appearance and proportions.

If you look at Blizzard's games, they have a rather distinctive style. For example, they have a habit of portraying males as very bulky/stocky and rather oversized (with gigantic hands). You can see this even in the more the realistically depicted characters in SC2 cutscenes (who are beefy beyond belief if you ask me), etc. Maybe you should actually know what you're talking about so as to avoid future failed comparisons and analogies. The more exotic-looking, non-realistic weapons in DA2 hardly constitute a "childish/cartoonish approach" when everything else is quite realistic as far as I can tell. There are certainly plenty of bland-looking weapons about and so forth.

EDIT: And if someone tries to imply that the elf redesign looks like night-elves...no. Take a closer look at them (I don't particularly  like the new DA2 elves, but I don't consider them cartoonish...they're just not all that attractive on the whole).

Oh ho! I'm off to tell your darkspawn thread the truth about you, Mr. TEWR. You are, in fact, a double agent! :D
